Chapter 215: The First Strike

The next morning, Tatehan woke up earlier than usual. He lay in bed for a few minutes, staring at the ceiling, his mind slowly pulling itself out of sleep and into the waking world.

The room was quiet, the faint hum of the base’s environmental systems the only sound, and for a brief moment, everything felt almost peaceful.

Then he remembered the group chat.

Tatehan reached over to the nightstand, grabbed his phone device, and unlocked it with a quick swipe. The screen lit up, displaying a handful of notifications from various apps, but the one that caught his attention immediately was the indicator showing several new messages in the group chat he had set up with the city leaders.

He opened it.

The first message was from Bjorn Odinson, the leader of New Helios. The Viking.

Tatehan read it, his eyes widening slightly as he processed the information.

Bjorn Odinson: My men have found two of the Obscuron’s bases in the North, near the wastelands. Newly constructed, vulnerable and easy to take down. We’re going in, preparing to strike within the next few hours.

Tatehan blinked, rereading the message to make sure he had not misunderstood. Two bases in the North. Newly constructed?. That meant they were not heavily fortified yet and not fully operational.

They were still in the process of being built, which made them prime targets.

But it also meant the Obscuron was expanding. He was pushing his forces into new territory, setting up infrastructure that would allow him to launch more coordinated attacks on the cities. If those bases were completed, if they were allowed to become fully operational, they would become staging grounds for invasions, weapons depots and barracks for troops that could be deployed at a moment’s notice.

Tatehan scrolled down, reading the next message he had sent in response before he had even fully woken up this morning. Wait, no. He had not sent anything yet. This was happening right now! 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝙬𝙚𝓫𝒏𝓸𝓿𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝙤𝓶

He started typing.

Tatehan: Isn’t that risky? Going in without more intel or backup?

The response came almost immediately.

Bjorn Odinson: We’ll be heavily protected. And besides, my people fight for fun. This is what we do.

Tatehan could almost hear the Viking’s voice in those words, the casual confidence, the almost dismissive tone that came from a lifetime of combat.

For the people of New Helios, this was not just a mission. It was an opportunity to flex their awesomeness. A chance to test themselves, to prove their strength, to do what they had been trained for since childhood.

Another message appeared in the chat, this one from Jorin Selles, the leader of Iron Haven.

Jorin Selles: What do we stand to gain from this? If you’re asking us to commit resources, I need to know it’s worth it.

Tatehan appreciated the bluntness. Jorin was focused on results. He was not going to throw his people into danger without a clear understanding of the benefits.

Bjorn’s response came quickly.

Bjorn Odinson: We’ll capture soldiers for interrogation. Intel on the Obscuron’s operations, his supply lines, his defenses in the West. We’ll also seize whatever weapons, vehicles, and equipment they’ve stockpiled at the bases. This is a chance to weaken him and strengthen ourselves at the same time.

Tatehan leaned back against his pillow, his mind turning over the Viking’s plan. It made sense. These bases were newly constructed, which meant they were still being supplied and still being staffed.

If they hit them hard and fast, they could take them out before the Obscuron even realized what was happening. And if they could capture some of his soldiers, interrogate them and extract information about his operations in the West, then they would have a much clearer picture of what they were up against.

The West was where the Obscuron had consolidated his power. It was his stronghold, the region he controlled completely. There were no cities or independent settlements. Just him and his forces, operating out of fortified positions that no one had been able to penetrate.

If they wanted to take the fight to him, they needed to know more about that territory, about how it was defended and about where the weak points were.

And these bases in the North? They were the Obscuron’s attempt to expand beyond the West. He was trying to push into new territory, setting up outposts that would allow him to store weapons, deploy soldiers, and launch attacks on the cities from multiple directions.

If they destroyed those bases now, before they were fully operational, they would cripple his expansion efforts. They would force him to divert resources to rebuilding and to defending territory he thought was secure. And in the process, they would gain weapons, vehicles, and intelligence that could turn the tide of this entire conflict.

Tatehan started typing again.

Tatehan: Good plan. If we take those bases out now, we stop his expansion and weaken his supply chain. Plus, the intel from captured soldiers could give us the edge we need to push into the West. I’m in.

Another message appeared, this one from Elara Voss-Smith, the leader of Loenitt.

Elara Voss-Smith: How can we help? What do you need from us?

Bjorn’s response was immediate and direct.

Bjorn Odinson: Send fifteen fighters. Each city. Equip really good, then send them toNew Helios. My people will lead the assault. Your forces will provide support and help secure the bases once we break through.

Tatehan watched as the other leaders responded, one by one, agreeing to send their fighters. Elara confirmed that Loenitt would contribute. Jorin said Iron Haven would send their best. Tom Vayr from Reon Outpost added that his people were already being mobilized.

And then another message came through, this one directed specifically at Tatehan.

Bjorn Odinson: Knight. You should come too. You’ll be useful in battle. Fight alongside me.

Tatehan stared at the message for a moment, feeling a strange mix of excitement and apprehension. The Viking wanted him there. Not just as a representative of Waython Hollow, but as a fighter. As The Knight!

He typed his response without hesitation.

Tatehan: I’ll be there.

He set the phone down on the bed beside him, his heart already starting to beat faster.

This was the first real coordinated action the alliance would take against the Obscuron. And he was going to be part of it.

And the shocking thing was that he wasn’t the one who initiated it. The Viking had brought up the battle idea, he had made it come to live and now was commanding the execution.

Tatehan threw the covers off and swung his legs out of bed, his mind already racing through everything he needed to do. He had to tell the commander. He had to coordinate with the Red Crest Clan to select the fifteen fighters who would be sent to New Helios. He had to make sure his armor was ready, his weapons checked and his systems functioning.

But first, he needed to get cleaned up.

Tatehan stormed into the bathroom, moving quickly and efficiently. He turned on the shower, letting the water heat up while he brushed his teeth and splashed cold water on his face to wake himself up fully.

Then he stepped under the hot spray, letting it wash over him for just a few minutes, long enough to feel good but not so long that he wasted time.

He dried off, pulled on a fresh set of clothes, and grabbed his phone from the bed, shoving it into his pocket as he headed for the door.

The hallway outside his quarters was quiet, most of the base still waking up, people moving slowly through their morning routines. But Tatehan did not have time for slow. He moved quickly, his footsteps echoing faintly off the polished floors as he navigated the familiar corridors toward the commander’s office.

He needed to tell her what was happening. He needed to get her approval to send fighters to New Helios. He needed to make sure everyone was on the same page before this operation kicked off.

Because this was not just a raid. This was the beginning of something bigger. This was the alliance proving that they could work together, that they could take the fight to the Obscuron instead of just waiting for him to come to them.

And Tatehan was not going to let this opportunity slip through his fingers.

He reached the commander’s office, knocked once, and pushed the door open without waiting for a response.

The commander looked up from her desk, her expression shifting from mild annoyance at the interruption to curiosity when she saw the look on Tatehan’s face.

At that moment,he even forgot to greet, he was went straight to the point.

"The Viking found two of the Obscuron’s bases in the North. We’re hitting them today. And I need fifteen fighters ready to go within the hour."

The commander’s eyebrows rose slightly, and then she nodded, already reaching for her phone device.

"Tell me everything," she said.

Tatehan did, telling her from start to finish and when he was done...
