"You are here. I've been looking for you."

Liam's attention snapped toward the voice. He tore his gaze away from Nathaniel and Zara and turned to the woman approaching him.

It was Edith.

He stilled.

She looked different tonight. The way her hair was styled, the elegance of her gown, the softness of her makeup—everything complemented her perfectly, highlighting a beauty he hadn't truly noticed before. And her smile—it was bright, lighting her face.

Liam found himself staring at her as if spellbound. He had never looked at her like this. In truth, he had never paid attention to these details at all. But now, for the first time, he found Edith undeniably charming.

"Mr. Harris wants to meet you," Edith said. "He is interested in investing in our company. I'm so excited. He is such a renowned investor, and he is genuinely interested in our work…"

She kept talking, but Liam barely registered her words. His focus was on her—the way her hands moved as she spoke, the sparkle in her eyes, her glossy lips. Everything about her seemed strikingly beautiful.

"He is waiting for you over there," she finished, gesturing lightly. "He is eager to speak with you."

When she received no response, the smile on her lips wavered slightly. A trace of uncertainty flickered across her face.

"Are you… not interested in working with him?" she asked carefully.

Liam continued to look at her, his thoughts drifting back to his conversation with Zara that night.

Zara had said Edith had feelings for him. He had dismissed it then, unwilling to consider it. But now, standing before her, he couldn't ignore the thought.

He knew Edith well. They were comfortable with each other. They trusted one another. She was someone he could rely on. Building a life with her wouldn't be difficult.

But love…Did he love her?

'I suppose it isn't love,' a voice murmured in his mind.

Not every marriage began with love. Loyalty and trust were often enough to keep a relationship steady.

'Love can come later,' he argued with himself. 'Once we start living together, love will happen eventually.'

"Are you even listening to me?" Edith waved her hand in front of his face.

Liam blinked, snapping back to the present. Only then did he realize how intently he had been staring at her. Heat rushed to his cheeks. He quickly looked away.

'Damn it… I was outright gawking at her,' he cursed inwardly. 'What must she be thinking?'

He ran a hand through his hair, trying to compose himself.

"Mr. Harris is eager to speak with you," she repeated, studying his expression.

"Yeah, I heard," he replied, pretending to think it over. "But I don't want to make any decisions tonight. Tell him to come to the office tomorrow."

"Alright, but you should at least talk to him for a bit. He has been waiting," Edith said hesitantly. "Don't you think he'll be upset if you ignore him?"

"Do you think so?"

She considered it briefly. "I think you should meet him. But the final decision is yours. If you don't want to see him now, I'll handle it." 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝘦𝓌𝑒𝑏𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝘭.𝒸𝘰𝑚

That was Edith—efficient, dependable, never refusing, never complaining. She had never once let him down. Liam was certain she could manage it without trouble. Still, he didn't want to burden her tonight.

"Wait," he said. "I'll meet him."

"Alright." Edith smiled. "Please come with me."

She led him to the room where Mr. Harris was waiting.

"Well, well—the famous Shay Walsh," Mr. Harris said as he rose and extended his hand. "I must say, I was quite surprised. You are truly talented."

"Thank you, Mr. Harris." Liam shook his hand. "Please, have a seat."

They both sat down.

"I'll wait outside," Edith stepped out of the room.

Liam watched her walk away before turning his attention back to Mr. Harris. "Edith mentioned that you are interested in investing in our company. I'm truly honored."

"The pleasure is mine, Liam," Mr. Harris replied warmly. "I want to work closely with the Lawson Group. At the same time, I plan to invest in your design company."

Though he nodded politely, Liam's thoughts were elsewhere. His mind kept drifting back to Edith. He wanted to talk to her, to spend time with her. Business could wait.

"I'm looking forward to working with you, Mr. Harris," Liam said. "Let's discuss the details at my office tomorrow. The after-event party is about to begin. You should enjoy the evening."

Mr. Harris smiled in understanding. "Of course. It's an important day for you. I won't take up any more of your time." He stood. "I'll see you at your office tomorrow, then."

"I'll be waiting," Liam replied, rising as well.

This time, he extended his hand first.

They shook hands.

After Mr. Harris left, Edith stepped back into the room. "How did it go?" she asked, unable to hide her eagerness.

Liam studied her for a moment before answering. "Are you hungry?"

Her smile stiffened slightly. His question caught her off guard. She thought the deal had failed. Why else would he avoid her question?

"I… no, I'm fine," she said quickly. "I'll eat later. Do you want something? I can get it for you."

She turned to leave.

Liam reacted at once, reaching out and catching her arm.

Edith stopped and turned back to him.

"Let's go out," he said.

She looked at him, startled. The party had already begun, and food and drinks were everywhere. Why would he want to leave now?

"You can eat here," she suggested softly.

"It's too crowded. I want somewhere quiet—just you and me."

Edith couldn't stop her heart from racing. There was something different in his eyes tonight—something she had never seen before. The way he was looking at her made her uneasy and thrilled at the same time, sending a strange flutter through her chest.

"Will you come with me?" he asked.

She couldn't bring herself to refuse. Almost dazed, Edith found herself nodding.

"Then let's go."

He took her hand and led her out of the hotel.

After a long drive, Liam brought her to a villa tucked away in a serene, quiet neighborhood. Edith recognized the place immediately. It was a property Liam often visited whenever he needed solitude. He never brought anyone here—at least, not that she knew of. Yet tonight, he had brought her.

That alone surprised her.

She had assumed he would take her to a restaurant. Why here? Curiosity stirred within her, but she said nothing, simply following him inside.

The housekeeper greeted them warmly. "Dinner is ready. I've arranged the table on the patio."

"Thank you," Liam said with a smile. Then he turned to Edith and extended his hand. "Allow me."

Edith had no idea what was happening, yet a warm sense of being cherished wrapped around her. 'Maybe he just wants to thank me for the successful event,' she thought.

With her heart trembling with nervous anticipation, she placed her hand in his. Liam guided her toward the backyard.

The moment she stepped onto the patio, she froze.

The space was bathed in the soft glow of colorful candles. Strings of tiny lights draped gracefully overhead.

Edith's heartbeat went wild.

'Did he… arrange a candlelight dinner for me?' her mind cried out in disbelief.

Edith could hardly believe her eyes. The setting was undeniably romantic, as though he had brought a date here. For a fleeting moment, an absurd thought crossed her mind—it almost felt like he was about to propose.

'Don't get carried away, Edith,' she warned herself immediately. 'He is only thanking you for organizing yet another successful event. That's all. Don't let your hopes soar.'

Yet no matter how firmly she tried to rein in her thoughts, she couldn't stop her heart from pounding with anticipation.

Liam pulled out a chair for her and gestured for her to sit.

"Thank you," Edith said softly, taking her seat. Her gaze drifted over the decorations before settling on the table. The spread was simple—a bowl of pasta, a fresh green salad, grilled chicken, and a bottle of wine.

"There wasn't much time," he said. "This is what the housekeeper could prepare. If it's not to your liking, we can always go out to a restaurant."

"No, it's perfect," she replied quickly. "More than enough. I love pasta and chicken—and wine too." She gave a slightly nervous smile. "But… when did you arrange all this? You brought me here so suddenly."

"I texted the housekeeper while we were leaving the hotel," he explained.

"Oh…" Edith recalled him typing on his phone as they got into the car. So that was what he had been doing.

Liam poured a glass of wine and handed it to her.

"Thank you." Her heart raced all over again.

She had spent so many years with him, worked with him, and attended many parties together. She had had dinner with him on several occasions, but something about tonight was different.

Edith couldn't stop thinking that he was going to propose to her.

"This place is beautiful," she started, trying to sound calm. "And the lights, candles…well, it seems like I have come on a date."

She smiled, attempting to mask her nerves, and lifted the wineglass for a small sip. When she lowered it, she felt his gaze on her—steady, intense, impossible to ignore.

Her breath hitched. She turned her head, pretending to admire the surroundings, though she couldn't focus on anything.

"Edith, do you like me?"
