Chapter 443: Adrienne’s Return (1)

When Lennox heard he might lose his chance at bigger fortunes and riches if he chose Adrienne, he didn’t think twice and chose his wife. He knew that true love and happiness were worth more than any material wealth this world could offer him. Still, Lennox wanted to give his wife and future children a comfortable life and provide for their needs. He couldn’t possibly rely on Adrienne and the Zhao family to provide for his needs.

The monk never mentioned the wealth he accumulated in the past, though he warned him that forsaking Adrienne to pursue fame and wealth would lead to a life of emptiness and regret. This was why he intended to step down once the project was completed.

He went home and found Adrienne still deeply asleep. However, her complexion had gotten better since the monk intervened. He knew that he had made the right decision to seek the monk’s help, and he no longer doubted Adrienne’s recovery.

"Mom, thanks for looking after Addie. I’ll take care of her, and you can rest now."

Rosemary had just finished wiping and changing Adrienne’s clothes when Lennox arrived.

"Did everything go well at your meeting? I hope they didn’t give you an earful because of your work delay." Rosemary asked, her concern about her son-in-law’s well-being evident in her voice.

"Everything went according to plan, Mom. I only need to assure the elders that there won’t be any problem with the release event." Lennox answered.

"Did Hunter already leave?" He then asked, noticing his brother-in-law’s absence since morning.

"Yes." Rosemary nodded. "He received a call last night and returned to work. He asked me to call him if anything happened to Addie."

She sat on the chair next to the bed and sighed. Lennox could see the exhaustion on his mother-in-law’s face as she closed her eyes and tried to catch a moment of rest.

"I hope she’ll wake up soon. Looking at her like this, I wonder if this is what Addie felt as she waited for me to wake up from the coma. It’s only been a month, and I can already sense the impatience growing within me. I couldn’t imagine how hard it was for her to endure, waiting for years."

"Every passing day felt like hell for Addie," Lennox admitted. "When I was still confined at the same hospital as you. I always see the helplessness and frustration in her eyes. Addie was so young back then that she didn’t have anyone to help her. She had to endure, waiting for years, all by herself."

Rosemary looked guilty and took a deep breath. "I’m sorry, Addie," she finally confessed.

"Addie doesn’t blame you, Mom." Lennox reminded her. "If anything, she put all the blame on herself for allowing all of it to happen."

"How can it not be my fault, Nox? When you think about it, Addie was nothing but a child back then. No child should suffer the same way she did. If only I had paid more attention to my husband and his family, would she have experienced pain like that? If only I had known the truth sooner."

She could have avoided many things if she had made the right choices. Hunter wouldn’t have believed she had abandoned him, and her daughter wouldn’t have suffered at the hands of the Jiang family. He wouldn’t have grown up with such deep scars.

Lennox said nothing. The afternoon breeze caressed their faces as they stood in silence, contemplating the weight of their past mistakes. The sun began to set, casting a warm golden glow over their shared sorrow.

"Anyway, I should get going. It’s getting late," Rosemary finally said, breaking the heavy silence.

She stepped out of the room, leaving Lennox with his wife. Rosemary thought she and her children could finally move on from their past and never thought something horrible like this would befall her daughter. Of course, her Zhao family didn’t give Lewis a chance to bail himself out. They were determined for him to face the consequences of his actions, no matter how long they would be.

Lennox occupied the seat his mother-in-law vacated and looked at his wife’s face. He wondered what she was dreaming. Was she thinking of him or reliving the past she was trying to forget? The monk said she would have to face her inner demons, but Lennox wondered if she was strong enough to confront them. He reached out and gently brushed a strand of hair away from her face, hoping that his love and support would give her the strength she needed.

"Addie, don’t you think it’s about time you wake up? How long do you plan to torture this useless husband of yours?" Lennox held her hand and pressed a kiss on her palm. Her warmth and the color of her complexion had returned, and even her breathing had turned back to normal. Still, Adrienne remained deep asleep, leaving Lennox feeling helpless.

"Noah has been asking for you for days, and Scarlett has stopped attending her recitals because you aren’t attending them. I don’t know how long I can keep my sanity if you remain like this."

He was glad that their loved ones came for their support, and Lennox could see for the first time how much Adrienne meant to him and those around them. Adrienne was alone in her past life, and Lennox would undoubtedly be in tears if she knew how many people loved her. She was not aware of the impact she had on others.

Myrtle had occupied one of their guest rooms and hadn’t returned to her apartment since the incident. Lennox was surprised that Adrienne’s best friend managed to hold her emotions and act rationally while he was already on the brink of insanity after seeing his wife’s condition.

Thankfully, Gavin didn’t make things difficult for him, even though Lennox could tell Myrtle was very concerned about Adrienne’s situation.

Lennox did some work and had dinner with his siblings before retiring for the night. He refused to move and sleep in a guest room, as he wanted to be by Adrienne’s side once she woke up. He held her hand at night, feeling a mix of worry and relief.

As for Purple Cloud, Lennox couldn’t actively interfere with his wife’s business, but he was able to help Myrtle and Valerie keep her company afloat. He can’t allow Adrienne’s hard work to go to waste. Thankfully, Adrienne had established good management at Purple Cloud. Lennox could dare say that his wife’s preparation and organization skills were second to none.

Adrienne didn’t hire the best, but she trained and developed her team to be top-notch as well. They could function with the least supervision and were capable of handling any situation that arose. Thinking about it, he wished his subordinates were as good as Adrienne’s team.

Lennox stared at his wife’s face as he lay on the bed next to her. Adrienne was still as beautiful as the day he met her. He desperately wanted to hear her voice again and see her laugh. What he would give in order to have her by his side once more.

Lennox didn’t notice the time and fell asleep; his last thought was his wife again. He had been having dreamless nights for some time now, and he always woke up feeling empty, despite Adrienne sleeping next to him. He could barely keep his focus at work and had to take home some of it because of his lack of productivity. The absence of Adrienne’s presence weighed heavily on his heart, making it difficult for him to concentrate on anything else.

It wasn’t any different that night, as he woke up in the middle of the night with the moon high up in the sky. Adrienne was still asleep beside him, and Lennox held his forehead, sighing to himself. There were days he wished that everything that happened was nothing but a nightmare and that he’d be able to wake up from it only to see his wife healthy again.

Suddenly, Adrienne gripped the sheet that covered her lower body and broke into a cold sweat as if she were experiencing a night terror. Lennox’s heart raced as he reached out to comfort Adrienne, gently shaking her awake. Concern filled his eyes as he whispered soothing words, trying to bring her back from the grips of the nightmare that haunted her sleep.

Lennox sprang into action and held Adrienne’s wrist, stopping her from hurting herself. He had seen her act like this before and knew it was best to keep her calm and comforted until the episode passed. He wondered what Adrienne was dreaming of this time.

He didn’t know whether he should be happy or not because, for the first time since Adrienne fell into slumber, she was showing some reactions. Adrienne was crying in her sleep, begging for something Lennox couldn’t quite make out. Her tears streamed down her face, leaving a trail of sadness behind.

Lennox felt a pang of guilt for not being able to understand her dreams and provide the comfort she needed. If only he could take away her pain and replace it with happiness, he would do it in a heartbeat.

Suddenly, Adrienne sat up, her eyes wide and unfocused as she yelled his name.

"Lennox!"
