Chapter 232: Where are you, Adrian?

The car followed Ji Yan’s car from a distance but suddenly Ji Yan disappeared into an alley.

The driver tried to keep up at first but in a matter of few seconds, Ji Yan was gone.

"S-Second Madam?" As the driver watched Ella’s face darken, he awaited his punishment.

But Ella schooled her expressions within a second, "To the King Empires."

The moment Ella entered the towering building, she was stopped at the entrance by the new receptionist, "Who are you?"

"Miss Yu?" Another employee whom Ella did not recognize rushed towards them, his gaze slightly curious.

"Yes," Ella nodded once.

The employee’s eyes widened. He leaned in and whispered something in the receptionist’s ears.

"M-Miss Yu," the receptionist bowed, showing her the way.

Ella could feel the curious gazes on her as she walked past the employees.

Lately, she had lost some weight again and the more she lost weight, the more her appearance changed as her features became prominent. So, she wasn’t surprised by their reaction.

Ella walked past them and took the private elevator that led to Adrian’s office.

But the moment she stepped inside, the place was empty.

Ella paused for a moment before she twisted the painting on the wall. The wall moved, revealing the secret room.

When Ella entered the room, the place was empty again.

Her brows tugged together. She did not know why she thought that she would find Adrian here.

Maybe it was Ji Yan’s sneaky behaviour that convinced her that something was amiss.

Ella slumped on the nearby couch and pulled out her phone before tapping on Adrian’s name on the chats.

[Baby, I have reached.]

[When would you come back?]

[Is the network bad over there?]

[I went to the university after quite a few days today and they are already talking about the final exams. Are you ready to take on your tutoring duties?]

The messages went on and on but there was no reply from the other side.

Adrian hadn’t even seen her messages.

Ella leaned her head back on the couch, suppressing the faint discomfort in her chest, ’Adrian, where are you?’

...

"Mr. Ambrose, now we can focus on our kids’ marriage in peace as our family’s crisis has finally come to pass after months..." Mrs. Hill, Max’s mother leaned back on the couch, crossing a leg over the other in an elegant posture.

Mr. Ambrose smiled amicably, "It’s a good thing of course, but have you managed to find who was behind the chaos?"

Mrs. Hill’s smile wavered.

"Lately, I have heard of some interesting news about the Yu Family..." Mr. Ambrose said thoughtfully, "And I believe that you’d want to know about it."

Mrs. Hill pressed her handkerchief on her face, letting out two soft coughs, "Who doesn’t know of the Yu Family’s scandal? And honestly, it’s not even surprising. They have been thriving for years, how can they not pass through muddled waters..."

"I am not talking about their scandal," Mr. Ambrose looked at Mrs. Hill, "But rather, I heard that they received a very important guest on the night of their party. And that guest had some special relations with their eldest daughter, Ella Yu. I am certain that you are very familiar with the name."

Mrs. Hill’s face blanched a little. From her face, one could tell that she was not hearing this news for the first time.

The news might have been suppressed to the public, yet the top few in the elite circles knew one thing: Ella Yu was off-limits.

"I have known Ella for years now and honestly, the girl is not anything special."

Mr. Ambrose leaned forward, "But people have been talking."

"People talk. Rumors are usually blown out of proportions. Who understands it better than you?" Mrs. Hill said with a polite smile.

Mr. Ambrose’s eyes flickered, "What are you getting at?"

"Ah, don’t mind me, Mr. Ambrose. You were the adopted son of the Ambrose family and your elder brother, Ruby’s biological father was the head... But don’t you remember the things that people said when he died?"

"Mrs. Hill..."

"Some believed he passed away due to an accident, some said he was sickly, some believed that he committed suicide due to company issues while some said that there was a conspiracy involved in his death..."

Mr. Ambrose’s face darkened by a shade.

Just as he opened his mouth to speak, Mrs. Hill looked behind him, "Ah, Ruby. Dear, when did you come?’’

Mr. Ambrose frowned.

"Come here. Let me take a look at you properly..." Mrs. Hill patted the spot beside her.

Ruby walked past Mr. Ambrose and sat beside Mrs. Hill.

"Max and his father couldn’t be here due to some important work affairs. But don’t you worry. I have discussed these things with your father already..."

Ruby looked at Mr. Ambrose before she turned to Mrs. Hill, "What... things?"

"Your marriage, of course. What else? Are you not excited about it?"

Ruby remained silent.

Mrs. Hill’s smile slowly withered.

Mr. Ambrose cleared his throat, "Ruby."

Despite his urging, Ruby did not say anything immediately. Her gaze lingered on her phone.

After a while, she lifted her head and looked at Mrs. Hill, "Maxwell is involved with other women."

"Is that all?" Mrs. Hall laughed like she just heard a joke, "Ruby, dear, men are a little slow in such matters. You know Max very well, he might be involved with other women now but after the marriage, you can always pull him to you."

Mrs. Hill looked at Ruby with a suggestive gaze.

A hint of frown appeared between Ruby’s brows but otherwise, she did not say much.

The marriage discussions went on for a while before Mrs. Hill stood up, "It’s a pity that the Madam is unwell or we could have caught up a little."

Mr. Ambrose nodded, "She is rather fragile so the change of weather doesn’t suit her well."

After Max’s mother left, Ruby got up from the couch.

She had just taken a step when a voice halted her in her tracks.

"Ruby."

Ruby turned to Mr. Ambrose.

"We will finalize the dates of your wedding in no time. Remember that you should start the preparations from now on."

Ruby remained silent.

"Maxwell told me what happened when he went to pick you up for the wedding shopping."

Ruby’s eyes flickered slightly when she thought back to the day when Max had seen her and Ronan together.

"He even doubted your relationship with the man."

Ruby opened her mouth to speak but Mr. Ambrose cut her off.

"I told Maxwell that the man has nothing to do with you. I have seen you growing up so I know your character."

Ruby looked at the man before muttering a soft ’thank you.’

"I heard you left with Ella that day."

Ruby’s brows tugged together.

"You must be thinking why am I asking you this after so long?" Mr. Ambrose remained silent for a while before he continued, "No matter what, you used to be good friends. If you want to, you can reconcile again."

The man did not wait for her response before he left.

Ruby stood in her spot for a few moments before she headed upstairs.

Her footsteps halted in front of a room. She raised her hand and knocked on the door.

But there was no response even after she waited for a while.

Ruby pushed open the door and stepped inside.

The room was enshrouded in darkness.

Hearing the sound of approaching footsteps, the woman on the bed stirred, "Cough... Cough... Who?"

Ruby switched on the bedside lamp.

"Ruby, dear... Come..." Mrs. Ambrose patted the spot next to her, slowly pushing herself up.

Her face was deathly pale. On her neck and body, there were fading purplish bruises but accompanying them were some new bright crimson ones.

Following Ruby’s gaze, Mrs. Ambrose hurriedly tugged off the clip on her head. As her bun loosened, her long red hair cascaded down, swaying lightly in the gentle breeze.

Ruby reached out towards the drawer, pulled out a small medicine tube and sat beside the woman.

Then wordlessly, she pushed the woman’s hair behind and started applying the ointment on the bruises.

Mrs. Ambrose stiffened, "It’s fine... It doesn’t hurt as much. They just look a little scary."

Ruby’s movements did not slow down but a drop of tear rolled down the corner of her eye.

Just as Ruby lowered her gaze, Mrs. Ambrose spoke.
