Reborn in the 70s: Pampered by Regiment Commander-Chapter 49 - Driven Away by Anger Again
49: Chapter 49: Driven Away by Anger Again
49 -49: Driven Away by Anger Again
That afternoon, Hongqi followed Zhou Hanliang and left.
Though people said he wasn’t the sharpest tool in the shed, this time he was quite astute.
While packing up, Xiaoqiong quietly asked him what made him change his mind.
He replied that if he became a soldier, he still might have a chance to marry Zhong Hongying.
If he didn’t, he would have no chance at all.
Zhong Hongying got the news and went to the village entrance early to wait, but unfortunately, Fat Auntie and Luo Gangshun had anticipated her move.
They accompanied their son all the way to the commune before returning, which meant Hongying didn’t get a chance to approach Hongqi at all.
“My mom and dad are really determined, driving there and walking back, all to keep Zhong Hongying away from my brother…” Xiaoqiong sat at Chuxia’s family, her words flying with vehemence.
Obviously, seeing Zhong Hongying thwarted brought her the greatest joy.
“I really can’t understand her thinking.
Is she after the person or something else?” Chuxia looked puzzled as she turned to Zhao Yulan, “Mom, do you understand?”
“Soldiers get a subsidy every month, and after demobilization, they can be assigned to work at the commune; those with good fortune might even get a placement in the county.
You tell me, what is she after?”
Yulan’s explanation led to a moment of revelation for both Chuxia and Xiaoqiong.
Still, they could not agree with such thinking.
On this issue, they shared the same view: when getting married, one should marry the person first, and then consider other things.
If the person isn’t the right one, even a household of gold and silver isn’t worth marrying into!
With spring planting beginning, Chuxia worked daily alongside Lin Baohe and Zhao Yulan.
At first, the couple was reluctant to let their daughter work hard, but they soon noticed that being active had its benefits, as Chuxia’s appetite increased.
Consequently, they no longer held her back.
Old Master Lin and Old Lady Lin waited at home for a few days, but when Lin Baohe and Zhao Yulan didn’t come to visit, they finally lost their patience.
One day, after the couple finished their day’s work, the elderly couple paid them a visit.
“Grandpa, Grandma, came to see our new home?” Chuxia greeted them with a smile and pointed to the pear tree in the middle of the courtyard.
“Isn’t it nice?”
Old Lady Lin made a show of looking up and then nodded repeatedly, “It’s nice, truly nice.”
“Dad, Mom, have a seat and we can talk,” Baohe said, bringing out two straw mats and placing them under the pear tree.
“It’s not too windy; it’s comfortable sitting here.”
“I’ll go inside and have a look first.” Old Master Lin, hands clasped behind his back, ambled around inspecting the rooms and after coming out heaved a heavy sigh, “Baohe, Yulan, the rooms are as dark as a cave and even smell damp; it’s not fit for living.
“Your mother and I talked it over with Baohai and his wife, and we think you should live in the old house, while Chuchun and Chuqiu can set up two rooms in the southern side of the courtyard when they look for their brides.”
Without a second thought, Baohe refused, “Dad, there’s no need.
We like it here, and the dampness will go away after we air it out.”
“Even if it’s not damp, it’s dark inside, which will make anyone living there feel oppressed,” the old man frowned and scolded his son, “Are you trying to upset your parents?”
“We are not,” Baohe insisted.
“Yulan and Chuxia like this courtyard, they like this pear tree, so we decided to live here.
Give it a few days and I’ll make the windows larger, which will brighten up the inside.”
With her hands covered in dough, Yulan emerged from the house, “Dad, Mom, you should just move over there.
Don’t hold up Chuchun and Chuqiu from finding their brides.”
“These rooms may be dark, but we don’t feel stifled at all because this is our own home; no one can kick us out.
Although the room in uncle’s house is bright, living there made us anxious and really stifled.” After their last falling out, Chuxia didn’t mince words anymore.
In her eyes, elders should be respected, but it depended on the type of elders they were.
As for those who constantly sought to trade her for their benefit, she just couldn’t bring herself to respect them.
Old Master Lin brandished his tobacco pipe, “No one dares to drive you out this time.
The room that was said to be yours will be yours; nobody else has the right to take it.”
“We won’t go!” Chuxia didn’t even bother to come up with a reason, but simply looked to Lin Baohe and Zhao Yulan, “Dad, Mom, we’re united on this.
What others say doesn’t matter, right?”
“Right!”
Zhao Yulan and Lin Baohe chorused.
“Who runs this house?” asked Old Master Lin with undisguised displeasure, staring at his son.
“Are you even a man?
First, your wife was in charge of you, now your daughter is.
Do you still act like a man at all?”
Lin Baohe was unperturbed.
“Dad, I listen to them.”
“You…” Old Master Lin pointed at him, seething, “With the money you’ll be making in the next few years going to the Old Chen Family, I think a donkey must have kicked your head!”
This house was bought for one hundred yuan plus sixty-two food coupons.
All of the food coupons had already been given to Uncle Gangshun’s family, and only twenty-one yuan had been paid, leaving a debt of seventy-nine yuan.
According to the accounts settled at the end of the year in Dalin Village in previous years, it would take at least four years to pay off that seventy-nine yuan, after all, they needed to save some money for essential purchases.
“Never mind a few years, even if it takes over a decade, we’d be happy to,” Lin Baohe said.
Old Lady Lin trembled with rage.
“Baohe, is this the good daughter you’ve raised?
Since when does she have a say when the adults are speaking?”
Lin Baohe’s lips moved, but he said nothing.
However, his look at Chuxia carried a hint of warning.
No matter what, those were his parents, and his daughter’s attitude was somewhat over the line.
In the end, nobody was able to persuade anyone else, and Old Lady Lin and Old Master Lin left shaking all over.
Watching the old couple’s silhouette disappear outside the door, Zhao Yulan poked Lin Baohe.
“Do you really think Dad and Mom came over just to get us to move in with them?”
“Do you think I’m dumb?” Lin Baohe replied sulkily, then slung his basket over his shoulder and left the house.
“Dad is pretty cool,” Chuxia couldn’t help saying.
Zhao Yulan looked puzzled.
“What does ‘cool’ mean?”
“It means having character, having an opinion,” Chuxia explained.
Zhao Yulan nodded in agreement.
“Yeah, your dad, even though he’s reserved, he’s not muddled; he’s got an opinion.”
“Second Aunt,” Lin Chuqiu came into the courtyard, calling out with an uneasy expression.
“Chuqiu’s here, sit down, Second Aunt is about to make pancakes.
Have Chuxia keep you company,” Zhao Yulan said enthusiastically to Chuqiu, having heard from Chuxia before that he had spoken up for their family.
“No need to sit, I just came to tell you, the Xue family will come two days later to set the marriage.
It was Grandpa and Grandma who asked my dad to set it up; you’d better start making plans ahead of time.” After finishing, he turned and left.
When Zhao Yulan called after him, he quickened his pace instead.
“This child…” Zhao Yulan went after him, but he was already out of sight, and she could only return, dejected.
“I wanted to ask a few more questions.
Why did he leave so quickly?”
Chuxia sneered.
“It’s fine that he came to tell us at all, and you want him to tell you in detail?
Such an awkward kid.”
