Chapter 46 - Duel with the Celestial Phantom Serpent

The moment Lan Yue declared the fight, the spectral serpent lunged.

Wang Li barely managed to leap to the side as the massive, translucent fangs slammed into the stone floor where he had just stood. The impact sent cracks spiderwebbing across the chamber, and a wave of spectral energy erupted from the serpent's body, distorting the air.

"Lan Yue, you really need to stop making things sound simple!" Wang Li shouted as he scrambled backward.

She was already moving, her sword flashing as she struck at the serpent's tail. Her blade passed through it, causing the massive creature to flicker, but it quickly reformed, hissing in anger.

"Great," Wang Li muttered. "So we can't hit it like a normal beast?"

Lan Yue frowned. "It's a spirit-bound guardian. That means—"

"It can only be destroyed with spiritual attacks," Wang Li finished. "And let me guess—you have a technique perfect for this?"

She smirked. "Of course."

With a flick of her wrist, Lan Yue's sword pulsed with golden energy, the runes along its blade glowing fiercely. She dashed forward, her movements fluid as she executed a complex sword form. Each strike sent out waves of spiritual force, slicing through the serpent's essence.

The beast let out an unearthly screech, recoiling as the golden energy burned away chunks of its body.

"Nice!" Wang Li said. "Keep doing that!"

"Oh, so you're just going to stand there?" Lan Yue called back, narrowly avoiding the serpent's tail as it smashed into the ground again.

Wang Li scowled. "Fine! Watch this!"

He took a deep breath and summoned his spiritual energy. His meridians flared to life, and he focused on channeling his Qi into his hands.

Frost Lotus Palm!

With a swift movement, Wang Li thrust his palm forward, sending a wave of ice-infused spiritual energy directly into the serpent's face. The ghostly beast screeched as frost formed along its jaw, its movements slowing as the freezing energy took effect.

Lan Yue's eyes widened. "Not bad!"

"Try not to sound so surprised!" Wang Li shot back.

The serpent, now enraged, let out a shrill cry. Its ghostly body shifted, expanding and coiling tighter around the chamber.

Then, suddenly—it split into three.

"That's cheating!" Wang Li shouted.

Lan Yue's expression darkened. "No. That's a phantom mirroring technique. Each one is as real as the original."

"Fantastic," he muttered. "Why don't we ever get easy fights?"

The three serpents attacked in unison.

Wang Li rolled to the side as one head lunged at him, its fangs barely missing his shoulder. Another whipped around to strike Lan Yue, forcing her to block with her sword, her feet sliding back from the impact.

"We need to destroy the real one," she said between gritted teeth.

"Right! And how do we figure out which one that is?"

Lan Yue's gaze flickered around the chamber. "Watch for which one recoils the slowest when hit."

"Great," Wang Li said. "So I just have to hit them all until one of them reacts weirdly?"

"Exactly!"

"That is not a good plan!"

But he had no choice. Taking a deep breath, he sprinted forward, gathering his Qi once more. He slammed his Frost Lotus Palm into the nearest serpent. The spectral beast flinched but immediately recovered, lashing out with its tail.

"Not that one!" Lan Yue called.

Wang Li ducked, barely avoiding getting crushed. He dashed toward the second one, channeling his energy into his palm again.

"Try this!"

He struck the second serpent's body with another Frost Lotus Palm. This time, the beast let out a loud screech and flickered, taking noticeably longer to reform.

Lan Yue's eyes gleamed. "That's the real one!"

"Then let's end this!"

She surged forward, her golden sword technique radiating power as she struck at the core of the spectral beast. Wang Li followed up with another Frost Lotus Palm, channeling everything he had into the attack.

The moment their attacks landed, the serpent let out an earth-shaking screech.

Its massive body convulsed before exploding into a burst of ghostly mist.

The remaining two phantoms vanished instantly.

Wang Li landed hard on the ground, breathing heavily. "We did it... right?"

Lan Yue dusted herself off. "Looks like it."

The chamber fell silent, save for the soft hum of spiritual energy in the air. The black jade key on the pedestal remained untouched, its glow intensifying.

Wang Li exhaled. "All that for a key?"

Lan Yue rolled her eyes. "This isn't just any key. This leads to the heart of the tomb—where the real treasure is."

He groaned. "Of course it does."

With a cautious step, she approached the pedestal and carefully plucked the key from its resting place. The moment her fingers closed around it, the entire chamber trembled.

Wang Li's stomach dropped.

"You just had to touch it, didn't you?"

Lan Yue smirked. "What's an adventure without a little danger?"

And then, the floor beneath them gave way.
