Chapter 62: A terrifying presence.

Unsurprisingly, all the soldiers gathered around the scene, wanting to see how the young prince battled with Alfred, the Ripper.

A shocking nickname, but it was what he was known as amongst the soldiers of the kingdom.

Or at least, what he used to be.

Holding a wooden sword of his own, Alfred felt a bit uncertain about the event he was about to partake in.

For starters, battling the young prince was not something he ever thought of doing, and if he was ever going to do it, he would have preferred it to be when he was at his best.

As of that moment, he was starless, with no aspect, title, or blazer.

It would be nothing but a disgrace for the prince to battle such a wasted old man.

Many of the spectators felt the same way, since they were knowledgeable of Alfred being fired.

That said, he was such a good and loving man that many overlooked it quite easily. Their respect for him went beyond him being a Mystero to the king.

"Your Highness, are you sure about this?" asked Alfred.

"Why, of course. My father always mentioned how much of a menace you were when you had your aspect. I’d like to see if you’re the same without it."

Alfred sighed.

The very next moment, his expression turned stale, and he took a fighting stance.

"As you wish, Your Highness."

Sylus smiled, satisfied with the current outcome.

"Don’t hold back."

"Understood!"

With a boom, Alfred charged forward, sending a fast sword strike at Sylus’s neck.

’Neck, ehn...’

A smile was glued to the young prince’s face.

Sylus deflected the strike using his hand, allowing the wooden weapon to simply bounce off upon impact.

While Alfred was taken aback by the fact Sylus chose to use his hand as a shield rather than his weapon, he didn’t let it hold him back for too long.

He quickly balanced himself on the ground, going for yet another fatal strike.

Just like Alfred, it was also safe to say Sylus had no combat advantage here, at least on the logical side.

Every single aspect or title he had was of no use to his combat prowess.

His only advantage would be to use his karma weapons, and he never intended to do that in the first place.

Sylus was only able to defeat his brother in battle because he used these abilities to his advantage.

Unlike Zani, whose aspect naturally made her a fighter, Sylus was different.

Without any of these, he was no different from a normal human with mana.

His only advantage was through mana fortification, which was the strengthening of one’s body with mana and also the heightening of senses.

Before Alfred could make any impact with the wooden sword, Sylus dashed to the side, ready to strike his opponent’s ribs.

At face value, it looked as though Sylus had won the match.

He was too close for Alfred to dodge, especially when he was still in motion.

However, Alfred was no regular soldier; he had years of combat experience and also knowledge about his opponents’ weaknesses.

In short, he predicted the young prince would make such a move.

Making a sharp turn, he caught Sylus off guard, and then—

Baam!

A sharp knee strike to the jaw.

Sylus was amazed at how quickly Alfred turned the situation.

Even as his body was falling to the ground, Alfred still launched himself forward, set on delivering another fatal blow.

And from the looks of things, Sylus knew he would be unable to dodge.

What shocked him most was how Alfred was able to gather mana around his sword—a feat Sylus never knew was possible.

’This old man wants to kill me.’

Sylus quickly guarded his face with his arm—the most he could do at the moment.

But what happened next sent a chill down the spine of everyone present at the scene.

A clangorous, chilling voice suddenly echoed:

{How dare you?!}

Everyone froze.

Including Alfred, whose eyes dilated in shock as he watched Sylus hit the ground.

However, that wasn’t what frightened him.

From Sylus’s figure came a creature.

Death.

Or perhaps a nightmare.

It was a shadow—

Like an extension of Sylus’s being. It appeared behind Alfred, its massive hand holding Alfred’s head, threatening to rip it apart.

{How dare you bully my master?!}

The creature’s shadow stretched far, causing dark mist to swallow the ground as it focused its red, glowing eyes on Alfred.

Alfred didn’t move, nor did he say anything.

He knew if he were to speak, this monster would kill him without a second thought.

It wasn’t until Sylus opened his eyes after touching the ground that he fully understood what was going on.

That was Sophia.

"Sophia! Time out! That’s not an enemy!"

The monster looked at Sylus.

{This human hurt you.}

"Yes, I wanted that to happen."

As he spoke, Sylus couldn’t help but wonder how she was able to take such a terrifying form.

To people, she looked like death incarnate; to him, she was just her usual self, only with dark mist serving as her entire clothes and covering her face.

Still, she was truly terrifying.

Seeing that there was nothing to worry about, Sophia removed her hand from Alfred’s head and then disappeared right back into Sylus’s shadow.

As soon as she vanished and the dark mist cleared, everyone fell to their knees in relief, wondering how they were still alive.

Alfred, despite being calm, could be seen shaking, his eyes still widened.

Of everyone, he was the closest to the monster, and there was no denying the cold, deathly sensation he felt in his chest.

It was suffocating.

Steadily, Sylus stood to his feet, walked toward Alfred, and stretched out his hand for a handshake.

"Y-you win..."

Alfred didn’t move a muscle, but he still shook the prince’s hand.

’Damn you, Sophia, I thought I told you to stay in the room. She ruined my plan.’ Sylus uttered in his mind while shaking Alfred’s hand.

Then he sighed.

"Alfred, would you like to be my servant instead?"
