Chapter 57: Go, Great Star Killer.

[Would you like to sacrifice yourself?]

Yes or no ƒrēewebnoѵёl.cσm

Sylus gawked at the screen for a while.

But not in a confused way; he fully understood what the system had told him.

To sacrifice probably meant to no longer exist in this world.

Two beings with the Catalyst star cannot exist at once.

One needed to go.

Sylus gulped down his saliva, and yet, he was somewhat calm.

His eyes shifted away from the screen and then toward the woman.

Right on time, he noticed Layla was beginning to make slight movements. She was waking up.

Sylus moved the screen to the side, taking slow steps toward her.

By the time he was close to the bed cage, he stopped, one hand in his pocket.

After a short while, Layla opened her eyes, her lips parting for a huge gasp, life slipping back into her body.

"Wh..."

The first thing she noticed was her hand chained to something. Secondly, the ground was covered in white fog, making it hard for her to see her own legs.

Soon after, she began to remember everything that happened before she fell into a coma.

Her husband was so desperate to control her, he kept using his star blessing until she could no longer take it.

That bastard did this to her.

Wait... how was she awake then?

And why was she in such a place?

All her questions were answered when she raised her head, only to see a young man standing in front of her.

He stood tall and confident; his eyes had a purple glow, calm and comforting.

Blood ran down his cheeks, although he remained as though it never affected him.

Like a man sitting and relaxing, despite burning in a sea of flames.

However, what really got her heart pumping was his hair, like strands of life, each flowing with grace and solitude.

She recognized them.

This man was the very same man the Catalyst star had revealed in all her dreams.

The man in whom she found comfort, even though she had never seen him before.

"A-Alex?"

Layla blurted out, her thin, malnourished face etched with what looked to be hope.

Sylus was taken aback by what she called him.

Alex? His name from his other life.

’She knows my name?’ he thought to himself.

Layla tried to move closer.

"You finally came—"

Unfortunately, she was chained down to where she was. Locked. Imprisoned.

"How do you know my name?" Sylus asked.

It wasn’t long, but you could see the look of heartbreak swarming Layla’s face.

Her lips shivered for a while.

"Y-You don’t remember me?"

Sylus paused.

A woman this gorgeous? There’s no way he wouldn’t remember her.

Could she also have been reincarnated from his world?

No, the age gap is way too much.

"I don’t. Did we perhaps meet in my former life?"

There was no use trying to hide his origin.

After he asked, Layla looked down more, her gaze dropping.

"I see..." she uttered, more to herself. "Is this my punishment? For not doing anything?"

Tears dropped from her eyes.

Following that was something Sylus never expected.

Her hair turned from purple to white.

’White?’

Sylus couldn’t believe what he was seeing.

Even after Layla’s entire hair turned white, it didn’t beat what came next.

Lifting her head to look at him, Sylus could see her bold, glowing red eyes.

’She looks... just like Erica.’

Was it normal for a mother to look so identical to their child?

If that wasn’t enough, Sylus was sure she looked exactly like someone else as well, someone he once ran into at the academy.

Before he could gather his thoughts, the birdcage collapsed to the ground, freeing Layla from her bondage.

Just when she wanted to collapse to the ground, she suddenly whooshed forward, like a gust of wind.

Standing in front of him, she wrapped her arms around Sylus’s shoulders, her head positioned to the side as she smiled.

"How long has it been... since I felt you like this?"

Sylus was obviously astonished.

"You keep acting as if we know each other. And something tells me we do."

"You were always so smart and yet so slow."

With deliberate movement, she grabbed Sylus’s hand and began to move it toward the system notification.

Which Sylus found strange, since no one was supposed to be able to see it.

Moving on, she took his finger and hovered it in front of the No option, that smile still glued to her face.

"Oi! Hold on!!!" Sylus tried to pull his hand away.

"Why... are you hesitating? I am half-dead already. Time was never a good friend of mine. At least now, I can help you, however small."

"That is not the point! Look, I do not know you, but I do know that this life was not mine to keep in the first place. I don’t belong to this world; I never did. I can’t steal the lives of two people just to survive here; I won’t allow it. This is your life, and I choose to interfere no longer."

Sylus moved his finger to the Yes option.

He never came into this with the mind to give his life away, but if that is the option he has, then he will do so without a second thought.

Yes, this woman—she was worth saving.

"How selfless of you..." Layla stopped his hand. "In a world where you don’t exist... I would never want... to be there."

’What is she talking about?’

Sylus yanked his hand and pulled her away.

Looking at her face, he could see the happy smile she had on.

"Go. The stars are waiting for your judgment. You were alone once, but this time, we will be with you."

"..."

"Decide for the law of the world and the people. You, Great Star Killer."

Sylus’s eyes widened when a screen popped up in front of him.

[The system has registered your choice.]

[You have rejected being a sacrifice.]

He soon realized not only could Layla see the screen, she could also make the choice.

"No, no, no..."

[The character Layla will be executed by the law of the stars.]

Almost immediately, Layla lost all control of her body, and she fell to the foggy ground.

Sylus quickly followed, pain written across his face as he held Layla in one hand.

He didn’t know her, so why does watching her die hurt so much?

His eyes blinked red, with blood still dripping from them.

"Get up! I refuse this outcome!!! Do you understand?! I refuse! Don’t die!"

Blood gushed from his eyes even more.

"I order you to stay alive!"

[The character Layla has been executed.]
