Chapter 233: Chapter 233 Persevering Hard Work Yue Jiannan
Yue Jiannan didn’t yet know that Lin Chunju was soon coming for an inspection.
He habitually woke up before dawn and, turning on his flashlight, burrowed under the blankets to memorize vocabulary.
His time at school had sanded away the last bit of laziness from him.
If someone had told Jiannan a year ago that he would be waking up early to study every day,
he would surely have thought either that person’s head had been kicked by a donkey, or his own had.
It turned out that anger sometimes works better than a donkey’s hoof.
Whenever Jiannan felt a bit slack and longed to lie down for a good sleep,
the moment he closed his eyes, he would see Yu Yaxian’s face.
The pretty one, with a small dimple on her cheek,
fiercely scolding him that he did not deserve to be with her, saying he was a toad lusting after swan meat.
At those times he would jump up with a start and force himself to keep studying.
Jiannan knew that Yaxian had spread some nasty rumors about him at school, but he couldn’t be bothered to argue.
He wanted to put all his energy into his studies; the final results would prove everything.
Thanks to Jiannan’s determination, he had finally moved up a notch in the latest mock exam.
He was now ranked sixth in the entire school.
And in this exam, Song Qiming, who had been stably in the top three, unexpectedly underperformed, ending up ranked even lower than him.
But Jiannan didn’t grow complacent; after all, learning is endless, and one mock exam couldn’t represent the final college entrance examination.
Ding ding ding!
Nearly two more hours passed.
The bell at the dormitory entrance was rung, and many people were just climbing out of bed.
Jiannan was already dressed neatly, brushing his teeth and washing his face at the water room.
The sounds of radios from various dormitories mixed chaotically together.
Some broadcast current affairs news, others played English listening exercises, and there were also recitations of poetry and literature.
Jiannan arranged his spittoon and towel carefully and, carrying a few books, prepared to dash to the canteen.
He had just gotten downstairs when he was stopped by the dormitory supervisor.
“Yue Jiannan, someone is looking for you.”
When Jiannan looked up, he saw Lin Chunju and Yue Qingqing waiting at the door and immediately broke into a wide grin.
“Ma, Qingqing, what brings you here? Where’s Big Brother?”
“Your eldest brother has business to deal with; he’ll come over at noon to pick us up. Ma wanted to come and see you first.”
Upon hearing this, Jiannan said, “You didn’t come especially to see me?”
“What did you think? Today Ma is here to buy a house.” Lin Chunju said mysteriously, patting her chest where she had hidden the bank book and Household Register.
Jiannan pouted, “So I’m just an afterthought.”
“What? Ma’s afraid that coming here too often would put pressure on you. Besides, you should’ve had a break and come home to visit. Why should Ma have to come to school, eh?”
Chided by Chunju like this, Jiannan scratched his head, feeling a bit ashamed.
“Going back and forth is such a waste of time; instead of spending that time traveling to the village, I might as well read more.”
Chunju took a step back to size up Jiannan.
The youngest son had grown taller and thinner.
But he seemed much more vibrant, his eyes brighter than when he was in the village.
“Come on, Ma will take you to a restaurant to eat something nice.”
Chunju was also heartbroken; after all, the canteen meals were mass-produced and surely not as good as the ones found at the restaurants around the school.
Jiannan initially wanted to decline, feeling that eating out was a waste of time.
But thinking that his mother had not come over easily, and the canteen was too noisy to talk, it might be better to eat outside.
So Jiannan took his mother and niece to a reputed restaurant nearby.
The three of them sat at a quiet table by the window, and Chunju generously ordered four dishes and one soup in one go.
As Jiannan wolfed down his food, Chunju couldn’t help but feel distressed.
“Eat slowly, no one’s competing with you.”
Jiannan gulped down a mouthful of soup to quell the heat and said, “Saving time, I need to go back for revision later.”
Seeing this, Chunju had the restaurant pack up three dishes and two steamed white buns.

“Take these back with you. Ask the dormitory supervisor for a steaming pot at lunch; it’s better to eat it hot.”
Jiannan smiled broadly, “Thanks, Ma!” It was perfect; he wouldn’t have to queue for food at the canteen.
