Chapter 84: Azuroms

Cassandra stared up with her mouth hanging open and her eyes shining from the strangeness of the view.

The passageway seemed to have been lit with thousands of blue fireflies. Their lights glowed without blinking and covered the entirety of the cave’s roof, as if it had disappeared and heaven stared back down with twinkling blue stars.

"Wow! What are those?" Cassandra asked in bewilderment, holding onto Siroos’s shoulders.

He had a very wide smirk going, knowing that she was going to glow just like these insects hearing his explanation.

"Azuroms, they glow when the scents of two mates mingle. They reproduce with the true fragrance of the mates," Siroos explained, watching Cassandra’s astonished eyes which had been illuminated by the blue light.

"Really? They are beautiful. How does that even work? Cassandra asked, reaching out with her hand, a tiny creature came and settled on her bent index finger. The size of a ladybird but its bulging back glowed as if a tiny blue fire had been fitted inside of it. Its flimsy wings fluttered as the light illuminated its whole body.

"The male absorbs the scent through a special pouch and then secretes it into the female during their mating dance. Just like werewolf shifters, they mate for life. And after the passing of their mate, lead the rest of their lives as single. They won’t mate again," Siroos explained while reaching out with his pointer finger which he had buried deep inside Cassandra and patting the tiny creature.

It snugly settled on Siroos’s finger and quite a few flew in and settled beside him. All hungry males, soaking the essence so they could mate as well.

"See! They are taking the essence." Cassandra watched mesmerised but also slightly shocked and embarrassed. She had never even imagined that some insects would be dependent upon her for their mating.

"They are fascinating but their number has dwindled over time because of how few fated mates we have in the pack now." Siroos wistfully touched the tiny creature’s feathery wings and it fluttered under his embrace.

"That’s sad, I hope they can reproduce," Cassandra whispered sorrowfully.

"Oh! They will, they got the scent of an alpha and his mate. Their light means they are ready for that, all of them are glowing today."

The Azuroms flew away from Siroos’s hand and she watched them in awe as they swirled around them in a mating dance. Males chased the females creating a unique blend of scents and tornadoes.

Cassandra had never seen such a sight before; this land was truly filled with wonders, and now she felt special for being a part of such an extraordinary feat.

Her legs slid down from Siroos’s waist, but she didn’t remove her arms from around his neck; still lost in the breathtaking scene above, Cassandra placed her head on his chest and hugged his back. Siroos held her to himself, his hand gently weaving through her hair.

The Azuroms dived down in a swarm and Cassandra closed her eyes in fright, ducking her head and burying it in Siroos’s chest. He heartily chuckled seeing her reaction.

"Relax! They won’t hurt you," his assurance mingled with his scent and calmness settled in Cassandra’s heart as she opened one eye and peeked at them.

The glowing creatures twirled around the couple; it was like being caught in a twist of tiny blue lights. Cassandra slowly opened both her eyes and was mesmerised by the sight.

They completed a circle around them and finally returned to their place on the roof of the cave.

"I love them," she whispered in awe and Siroos couldn’t help but place a sweet kiss on her forehead and murmur against her skin.

"We will return to feed them more of our essence. Come let’s head out."

Cassandra fixed her clothes, Siroos helped her as he finally led her away. Her mood had alleviated after experiencing such a beautiful sight. The anger and resentment she harboured against him seemed to have dissipated today.

All the way back, he could see her smiling and carrying on a conversation. She held his arm of her own accord and didn’t push him away. The experience had gone the way he had planned.

"How did you discover them?" Cassandra questioned, her mind was still stuck on them.

"They have been part of the pack as far as we have known. The information has been passed down from generation to generation," Siroos gently explained and she nodded.

They reached outside where the sun was almost at its peak now. Both of them had to squint their eyes. Cassandra took a moment and her eyes wavered towards the oasis. She remembered the seed they had planted.

"We should water our seed now that you are here. I have been doing it alone, but together, it will be more beneficial."

"Of course, we still have time before the sun is at its peak. Let’s water the seed and then we can head over to the Saffron fields," Siroos agreed and guided his mate towards the oasis.

As they neared the point where they had grown the seed, a surprise awaited them. A tiny light green sapling had sprouted from the sandy soil and stood with two small curled-up leaves, gently swaying in the light breeze. ƒreewebɳovel.com

"Heavens! Our tree, it’s finally sprouting." Cassandra happily let go of Siroos’s bulging arm and rushed forward to observe the little plant up close. She kneeled beside the sapling with a heartwarming smile and lovingly touched its unfurled leaves.

Siroos sauntered over with a dazzling smile. Their plant had sprouted, there was hope for them. It meant Cassandra did feel something for him, deep inside her heart, she had accepted him to a certain level.

Turning towards the oasis, Siroos squatted at the bank and cupped his large hands. Filling them with clear water he carefully carried it to Cassandra.

Seeing him bringing the water, she conjoined her hands as well and dipped them downwards.

Siroos tipped his above hers and water slowly flowed onto hers, and from there, it trickled down on the sapling.

The joy of seeing it sprout seeped into their hearts. It was like their child, they were going to nourish it with love and care.

"You know what it means?" Siroos casually asked as the last of the water drops left his hands and dropped on hers. They glistened under the golden sun as they dropped down and quenched the throat of the young sapling.

Cassandra glanced up at her finest specimen of a mate. His tanned skin almost glowed like specs of the sand underneath his feet due to the gold streaks of the sun.

The sweat trickled down the very ravines of his corded muscles and she forgot to breathe for a second. The soft tresses of his were softly kissing the tip of his slender nose.

Aylin seemed to have taken extra care in creating him.

And that smile he held, she had hardly ever seen him smile like that with anyone else. Mostly, he wore a scowl, but not with her. With her, he let out this precious smile, reserved only for her.

For what seemed like an eternity, she was lost in the shining gold pools that were his eyes; the man could cast a spell on her without even uttering a word.

Only when his full lips upturned from the sides into a knowing smirk did Cassandra come to her senses. Pink tinged her fluffed cheeks as she shook her head and tried to break the trance between them. A myriad of emotions swam in her eyes.

"No?" She quickly said, remembering he had asked her a question before she got lost in those magnetic eyes of his.

"It means a part of you has accepted me," he answered without hesitation, lowering himself so his mouth was near her ear. "I have made my way into your beautiful heart, Malakti."

Goosebumps coated every inch of her skin; his voice was so masculine, so rich.

But she quickly composed herself and gathered herself from the ground in an elegant move. She brushed away the soil from her skirt.

"Don’t get over yourself, Alpha Siroos. We have much work to do in the fields. Everyone must be expecting us," Cassandra quickly spoke and tried to escape. But there was no escape from the brute that was Siroos.

He grabbed her elbow before she could put distance between them. Yanking her back he captured her in his strong arms and had her flush against his glistening chest.

"Call me, Siroos," he demanded in a deeply enigmatic voice which had her knees crumbling.

"No!" She defiantly answered, avoiding his gaze. She could swear this man had magical abilities to cast a trance spell on her through his eyes.

"No? Do it or I will eat your lips right here while the Elders will watch from their stone huts. I swear I won’t stop," he threatened and Cassandra knew he never carried out empty threats.

This man was going to be the death of her.
