Chapter 128: Watching From Afar

After that incident, Cassandra and Siroos’s days crawled sluggishly. The tension between them was very clear for the whole pack to see.

Siroos now knew he was being reborn repeatedly due to some sadistic game by the gods. And he knew it involved love. No wonder he was deprived of it every lifetime. But he wondered why it was different, this time around.

And why Cassandra?

She avoided him at all costs though.

Meals were eaten at different times as she no longer prepared meals and focused her entire attention on her training. She avoided the table and only ate there when Siroos and Haylia were absent.

The incessant fear that people didn’t wish for them to be together had grappled her heart, and didn’t let go. She had to safeguard what was left of her battered beating organ.

Burying herself completely in her training, she converted her rage and fears into something fruitful. At times she wished to write to Lotus but then decided against it.

Siroos’s spirit animals returned slowly as the effects of the potion wore off but they weren’t the same. They were quieter and slightly weakened

His wolf though had suffered the most, he was severely wounded physically and emotionally. Absorbing all the trauma and damage so others could recover.

Without Cassandra, he couldn’t heal and Siroos could no longer shift into his wolf form. He also lost his rapid healing ability but hid the truth from everyone, even from Faris and Ranon.

He didn’t want anyone’s pity.

He only discussed it with Fownso who fixed him a healing potion for his wolf but it didn’t work. According to Fownso his wolf needed his mate to heal him. But his mate wouldn’t even look at him anymore, let alone speak to him.

He silently watched her drifting away from him, hardly ever smiling. That infectious smile of hers seemed to have been lost in the chaos that was their life now. freewebnσvel.cøm

Siroos would transform into his eagle and watch her from afar while she trained with Faris; sometimes, Ranon would join her.

"Like this, that’s where you will make the incision to cut out the heart properly," Faris guided her in extracting the heart of the deer she had finally hunted.

Siroos could sense her anxiety through the bond, not to the extent he used to because of how his wolf had retreated into the hidden crevices of his brain. The grief of hurting his mate exceeded the pain he could handle because the potion had targeted him specifically.

Then, her disgust flooded the bond as he watched from atop the palm tree he had perched himself on.

"Eww!" She made a face as she poked the unbeating heart of the dear, her hands covered in blood.

Faris laughed out seeing her expressions.

"Sometimes they make you eat it too," he leaned in and teased.

Cassandra’s head sharply turned, her eyes widening with the shock that had hit her.

"You don’t say."

"Mhm! I do. If you are stranded in a real-life situation and have no firewood, you will need to eat the meat raw. All of us have done that." Faris kept on explaining but with a hint of mischief. They ate raw meat but it wasn’t done in Luna Trials.

"You are mischievous Faris." Cassandra slapped his shoulder and he laughed louder.

Siroos helplessly watched. His heart slightly eased that she was with his brother who wouldn’t let her spiral into depression but he couldn’t help but feel jealous too. He wished to be in Faris’s place.

Cassandra continued to carve out the heart when she accidentally cut her hand with the sharp dagger.

"Sssss!" She whelped in pain, retracting her hand.

"Oh! No." Faris quickly grabbed Cassandra’s hand, leading her away from the deer and grabbing the water skin to wash away the blood so he could inspect the cut.

Siroos’s screech of pain, seeing his mate hurt, left his beak. All the self-control he possessed was practised at that moment to not fly over and inspect her wound.

His panic and hurt crawled into her heart and she glanced around to see if he was nearby, watching her somehow but couldn’t find him.

He agitatedly observed her shifting from one claw to the other.

"The wound is pretty deep, SIL. Keep the hand elevated until Healer Fownso gets here. I have mind-linked him," Faris said while raising her hand so the wound in her palm wouldn’t bleed so profusely. Cassandra nodded her head while trying not to wheeze with pain.

Soon everyone had gathered around their Luna as they took her inside the common area and patched her up.

Siroos flew down from the tree and shifted, following them inside but staying at a distance so she wouldn’t see him.

"You gave us a scare."

"Are you alright?"

"Does it pain too much?"

Ara, Lana, Ranon, Tara and Faris all of them had gathered around her like flies and were bombarding her with questions laced with their concerns as Fownso patched her up.

Cassandra slowly smiled, seeing all of them so concerned, and answered politely.

"It’s not that grave a concern. It’s just a scratch, I will be fine."

Fownso respectfully bowed after the bandage was done and handed over a healing ointment to Ara for their Luna with instructions.

"You should rest and let it heal, we will practice tomorrow now," Faris said, stretching his legs and grabbing Ara’s waist, pulling her into his lap. Under his touch, she blushed like a maiden who had just been caught with her lover.

"Yes, yes, give Faris time to pursue his flirting," Ranon bumped his shoulder into him and teased.

"As if you didn’t sneak out all the time with Lana before the both of you were mated, don’t judge me," Faris retorted back, rolling his eyes.

Cassandra forgot all her pain as the group of loyal people around her joked and laughed, trying to keep the moment light.

And then she felt his presence behind her, his scent made its way to her like a balm settling over her wound. But she stiffened as his heavy and distressed voice came through.

"Has the wound been treated properly?"

Faris turned to face his brother.

"Yes, but I have cancelled further training. Besides, I need some alone time." Faris got up steadying Ara while keeping his arms around her.

"Lana needs to rest so we will head off too now," Ranon quickly spoke, gesturing to Lana who got the cue.

"I have my patrol duty at night so I should be leaving as well." Tara gently squeezed her Luna’s shoulder and made herself discreet. Everyone quickly filed out trying to give some privacy to their Alpha and Luna. They hadn’t spoken to each other in a week now.

Cassandra sat stiffly, she wished to get up and head over to her room in order to avoid a confrontation with him.

His grieved voice hit her right into the gut when he asked. The voice coming from much closer to his previous one. She could almost feel his heat behind her and yet knew he was keeping a distance.

"Are you in pain?"
