Reborn as a Tough Army Wife-Chapter 724 - 719: After Waking Up
The doctor looked at her, scared into making a decision, nodded, and gestured for her to follow, "Alright, come with me to sign, we’ll arrange the surgery, and you can pay the full surgery fee."
Duan Fenghua might be someone of note in the countryside, at least more knowledgeable than the average illiterate rural woman.
But with such a major event, she was truly clueless, her mind a blank slate. Normally, she’d have fainted from fear, yet under these circumstances, she forced herself to stay conscious through gritted teeth.
After she followed the doctor to sign, she hurriedly went to find the medical fees.
Initially, she could have asked the Luo Family, but with Xu He’s current situation, Duan Fenghua understood that it was impossible for Xu He to continue with Shuanzi. Conversely, it might be happier for her to be with Luo Zhiming.
This was because Luo Zhiming was infertile, and after this surgery, her daughter would also be infertile, hence, in a way, they were well-matched and wouldn’t despise each other.
However, Xu He’s induced labor could not be let known to the Luo Family; she had to keep it tightly concealed. As for how to explain the child to the Luo Family, she believed Xu He should have a plan.
Fortunately, Duan Fenghua had a close brother in the provincial city, and his family was in good condition. She found a place and called her brother, saying she needed to borrow money.
Duan Fenghua’s brother was considerably younger, and with her support, he had pursued his education. Hence, this brother was always grateful to her.
Over the phone, as soon as her brother heard Duan Fenghua needed money, he didn’t hesitate and delivered the money half an hour later.
Originally, Duan Fenghua’s brother intended to accompany Xu He, but fearing he would learn of her daughter’s messy affairs, Duan Fenghua excused him saying that the Luo Family would soon be back to take care of everything, and sent him away.
Duan Fenghua paid the surgery fee in full, and soon after, the doctor came out holding the baby.
Seeing the tiny bundle in the doctor’s arms made Duan Fenghua extremely emotional. After all, it was her first grandchild, and very possibly the only blood-related grandchild she would have.
Yet, she didn’t know if she could keep the grandchild by her side or if Xu He would immediately send the child to Shuanzi.
Remembering this, Duan Fenghua urgently asked the doctor, "Is the child a boy or a girl?"
The doctor smiled, handed the baby to Duan Fenghua to have a look, "It’s a boy."
"Ah?" Duan Fenghua didn’t know whether to be happy or sad. In fact, when she thought about the possibility of the child being a boy and then being promptly sent away to others, she wished it were a girl so there was no need to send her away.
Seeing the doctor handing over the baby for her to see, Duan Fenghua thought it was to give her the baby. She reached out to take him, asking simultaneously, "Can I take the baby with me now?"
The doctor shook his head and explained, "The baby is very weak because he was induced, he needs to stay in the hospital for a few days, we will handle the follow-up, and we will notify you if there’s anything."
"That’s good." With the child safe, Duan Fenghua breathed a sigh of relief, but she was still more anxious for her daughter, asking hastily, "Doctor, how is my daughter now?"
The doctor reassured Duan Fenghua with a nod, "Lucky we removed the uterus in time, there shouldn’t be any major issues. Wait here for a bit, she’ll be out shortly."
"Mm."
It was about an hour later that Xu He was finally brought out by the doctor and taken to the ward, and Duan Fenghua accompanied her to the ward.
Looking at Xu He, who hadn’t yet woken up on the hospital bed, Duan Fenghua stared blankly, sighing deeply as she recalled the series of events.
She couldn’t understand how her daughter, who was once excellent in every way at home and admired by others, had come to such a plight.
In normal circumstances, her daughter could’ve married into a good family. At her age, she would have had grown-up children, and the family could live a happy life, not particularly wealthy, but not needing to endure so much suffering.
But now, she’s not even twenty-four and has lost the right to motherhood, and the baby just born doesn’t belong to her. What would her future hold?
Furthermore, with so many things happening, how would she explain any of this to her husband at home?
Thinking of this, Duan Fenghua started sobbing quietly by Xu He’s hospital bed.
It was unclear whether Xu He was woken by pain or by something on her mind; the doctor said she wouldn’t wake up for at least two hours, but after just over an hour, Xu He faintly awoke.
When she did wake, she saw Duan Fenghua crying.
Because of the anesthesia, Xu He was a bit slow to react upon waking, she just stared at Duan Fenghua silently, not speaking.
Duan Fenghua, seeing Xu He awake, immediately wiped her tears and stood up, asking anxiously, "My girl, you’re awake, how do you feel, are you in pain?"
After a moment of confusion, Xu He’s consciousness gradually returned. She looked around, realizing this definitely wasn’t the rental house she lived in, and got an ominous hunch, immediately asking Duan Fenghua, "Mom, where is this? Why are you crying?"
Duan Fenghua said, "This is the hospital."
Hearing this, Xu He’s premonition was confirmed, and she became agitated on the spot. She propped herself up strenuously, yelling at Duan Fenghua, "What, you brought me to the hospital? Why did you bring me here? I’ve told you I didn’t want to go to the hospital."
Seeing her so anxious, Duan Fenghua immediately supported her, stuffing a pillow behind her while softly persuading, "Hehua, don’t be agitated, the doctor said you’ve just had surgery, you need to stay calm."
Upon hearing she was brought to the hospital, Xu He thought of a series of things. She was afraid her situation was exposed, worried the baby’s status might be revealed, causing unnecessary trouble, she lost her senses and began scolding Duan Fenghua, "Mom, have you lost your mind? How many times have I told you, I just wanted to give birth at home, not at the hospital."
Duan Fenghua, still bemused by all the events, thought Xu He was still worried about the medical expenses, and quickly explained, "Hehua, don’t worry, don’t worry about the money, I’ve taken care of it. I borrowed some money from your uncle, we don’t need to pay him back, you shouldn’t feel any burden."
