Chapter 1135: A Bad Woman

Su Li sobbed, his face streaked with tears, feeling even more aggrieved when his mother asked him about what happened. He could hardly form a coherent sentence through his cries.

Beside him, Su Bing quickly stepped in to explain, "Just now, Dad came to pick us up, and the other child’s parents have already apologized. Since they’re old acquaintances, Dad didn’t want to make a big deal out of it. But honestly, this wasn’t really their fault. Su Li was too much—he thought no girl could possibly beat him and ended up provoking her."

When Gu Zi heard this, she couldn’t help but feel impressed. There was apparently a girl in school who could actually beat Su Li—someone who was strong enough to hold her own against him.

She turned to Su Shen and asked, "An acquaintance? Whose child is it?"

Su Shen replied, "It’s Jin Long’s sister’s daughter. Her in-laws are in the capital, and they helped write the recommendation letters for all three of our kids to get into school. You remember her, right? She was the one who came with Jin Long to your graduation party. Jin Guo was with her parents, visiting her grandfather’s place."

Gu Zi’s face lit up with recognition. "Oh, I remember now. That girl was quite young, wasn’t she? Just in elementary school?"

"Yes," Su Shen confirmed. "She’s in first grade. The whole thing started because Su Li was trying to claim the role of the ’big boss’ in the first and second grades. Jin Guo didn’t agree and challenged him, saying whoever wins the fight gets to be the boss. But Su Li, thinking he was too good for a girl, refused to fight her, and in the end, Jin Guo chased him down and started hitting him. The teacher had to step in to break it up."

Gu Zi couldn’t help but chuckle at the image of her son, who had always prided himself on being the toughest in the class, getting outmatched by a little girl. She quickly reassured him, "Alright, no more crying. I’ll make you something nice to eat today, and I have a suggestion. Why don’t you talk to Jin Guo and suggest you both take turns being the boss?

"Being the boss isn’t just about strength, you know? It’s about leadership and decision-making skills too. So, why not see who has the better overall ability? That way, even if you end up losing, you won’t lose out. Sometimes losing can be a form of progress."

Gu Zi thought that maybe it wasn’t such a bad thing that Jin Guo had beaten Su Li. After all, competition led to improvement. If Su Li could learn to compete with Jin Guo, he’d learn valuable lessons on how to be a true leader. That way, he wouldn’t be so easily led astray by others with ulterior motives in the future.

Su Li, still sniffling, looked up at her, his face still full of frustration. "But Mom, when I see her now, I’m scared. I’m afraid she’ll call me a loser and won’t want to compete with me anymore."

Gu Zi smiled gently. "Don’t worry, she won’t think that way. But you have to learn to treat Jin Guo as an equal. Just because she’s a girl doesn’t mean she’s any weaker than you. If you treat her with respect, I’m sure she’ll be more than willing to see you as a worthy competitor."

Su Li nodded, but his sense of injustice still lingered. "But Mom, today I lost, and Jin Guo said I have to be her sidekick from now on. Doesn’t that make me look like a joke?"

Gu Zi couldn’t help but laugh. Jin Guo had certainly found a clever way to handle Su Li. "To me, Su Li, it’s actually quite impressive when someone who loses has the courage to own up to it. It’s a sign of strength, not weakness. If you choose to be her sidekick, I don’t think it’s shameful at all. But if you try to back out of your word—that’s when you’d truly lose face. We’ve raised you to be a man of your word, haven’t we?"

Su Li’s eyes lit up, and he straightened up with newfound determination. "Yes, Mom! I want to be a man. I’ll protect you and my sister. I understand now, I’ll keep my promise!"

Su Li had lost the fight, and to make matters worse, it was to a younger girl. He had felt as though his world had crumbled. But after his mother’s words, he realized it wasn’t the end of the world. Being a sidekick wasn’t so bad. At home, he could take care of Lele, and at school, he could look after Jin Guo, treating her like a younger sister.

With that thought, Su Li suddenly felt lighter. He turned to Gu Zi and said, "Mom, I’m going to take Big Yellow for a walk. I’ll train and get stronger. I’ll still be her sidekick, but I’m going to keep improving and beat her next time."

Gu Zi, knowing that Big Yellow was with him, wasn’t worried. She agreed, watching as Su Li headed out the door, pulling the dog behind him.

She then turned to head into the kitchen to prepare dinner. For some reason, though, she felt a sense of unease, a nagging feeling that something unexpected was about to happen.

Sure enough, not long after, Su Li came rushing back in, dragging Big Yellow behind him. "Mom! Mom! I saw that bad woman! She’s over at the neighbor’s house, and she brought a police officer with her! She’s the one who’s been causing trouble for you back in Guangcheng!"
