Chapter 155: Rebel sightings

"Don’t you dare use the "try" word in front of me. You would save her or lose your head while trying," he growled authoritatively, interrupting the physician.

"I’m sorry, Your Highness, I’ll do everything in my power to save the princess consort," the imperial physician said in a fearful voice after hearing the threat in the prince’s voice.

’The prince just said to save the princess, right? He didn’t add the baby, so that was it; he’d follow the prince’s words and save the princess since he couldn’t feel the baby’s heartbeat anyway. Yes, the princess consort was the priority,’ the imperial physician inwardly told himself.

Luciana felt like she was stuck in a place so dark she couldn’t even see in front of her. Accompanied by the darkness was a certain kind of coldness that chilled her to the bones.

But luckily the coldness didn’t last since she soon realized she was feeling hot. The heat wasn’t too much, just the right amount to quell the coldness within her.

After a long time, she began to hear faint sounds of people speaking around her. She couldn’t make out their words but it gave her a sense of security in this darkness.

After some time, everything became quiet, making her panic. Until she felt a gentle caress on her cheeks. The touch was so warm it shot straight to her heart, and right there and there, she could feel the darkness dissipating replaced by a bright light.

"I’m sorry, love, forgive me, I didn’t know my impulsiveness would put you in such danger... Don’t leave me, Luciana; I need you; please don’t leave me alone."

Luciana heard Nicholas’ words through the haze and wanted to comfort him. She wanted to tell him everything was alright, he shouldn’t feel guilty but she couldn’t even pry her eyes open.

Her eyelids felt so heavy like cement; no matter how hard she tried, everything just felt too difficult to do, so she gave up.

She could only listen to Nicholas’s pleas and words full of guilt, begging her to come back to him.

Evelyn beamed at the news she had just heard; her grin was so wide that it spread from ear to ear.

"Are you saying even the physician thinks it’s impossible to save her life?" she chirped her voice full of happiness.

"Yes my lady, as soon as I saw Dora returning to the moon palace to prepare the inner chambers because the princess consort drowned, I used that as an excuse to stay around and fish out information for you," Ruth said in a tone full of bootlicking.

"Good, good," Evelyn said beaming.

"Rhoda, bring those gold bangles on the table over there and give them to Ruth for her handwork," she added.

Rhoda walked to the table and took the gold bangles resting on the table and reluctantly gave them to Ruth.

"Thank you, My Lady," Ruth said in a sweet voice, accepting the bangles and bowing. 𝒇𝒓𝒆𝒆𝙬𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝒎

Evelyn waved her off, giving her permission to leave.

"I’ll take my leave, My Lady," Ruth said before she left.

Left alone with her lady, Rhoda couldn’t help but voice out.

"My lady, why did you give such expensive gold bangles to that peasant? I think you shouldn’t always indulge her like that, she might become more greedy," she said.

Rhoda’s tone was full of dissatisfaction as if forgetting she was a peasant herself.

"I’m still your master; watch your tone before you speak to me," Lady Evelyn warned, not liking Rhoda’s tone.

"I’m sorry for my impudence, My Lady," Rhoda apologized.

"I’m just concerned. This is not the first time the princess consort has been on the brink of death but has miraculously woken up. I think you shouldn’t be happy just yet," Rhoda added.

Evelyn’s face paled at Rhoda’s words. They were the truth; that princess consort was just too lucky; no matter what happened, she never died. Maybe it was time she intervened. It was time she helped the princess to sleep forever.

She could only have the prince to himself if Princess Luciana was no longer in the picture.

"Go to the imperial pharmacy and summon Physician Philip to my quarters. Tell him it’s urgent," She instructed and Rhoda nodded.

"I’m going to summon him right away."

David was lying in bed when Eric announced that his mother, Noble Consort Margaret, had arrived together with the emperor.

He stared at the hourglass on his desk and was surprised at how fast the rumor had spread. It was just about 5:00 pm, and Eric had yet to inform the emperor of his condition like he had instructed, but they were already here.

"Father emperor, Mother," David said and tried to sit but his mother hurriedly approached him and held him down.

"No need for formalities. You are badly hurt like this, but you kept it to yourself. Do you know how worried I was when I found out you left the capital just like that? Why are you always so foolish?" Noble Consort Margaret scolded but her words were full of gentleness and indulgence.

"I’m sorry for making you worry, Mother, but after I heard my men tell me about the rebels who have begun to terrorize the small villages on the outskirts of the Southern region, I just couldn’t sit still. I could only see it for myself; you know, the people only have us to protect them," David said, his voice full of emotion.

If one didn’t know, they would think David was so concerned about those small villages.

About an hour ago, David had spoken with his uncle, the minister of war, and they had come to a decision to make their lie believable by attacking the small villages on the outskirts of the Southern region.

According to the wicked uncle and nephew duo, raiding the villages and leaving a few dead bodies along the roads would cause Nicholas to be unsuspecting so that he would easily fall into their trap.

According to them, sacrificing those lives was a necessary evil since the benefits they would reap later would be all worth the sacrifice.

"David, can you explain to me in detail what is actually going on? Some weeks ago, the minister for war reported sightings of rebel soldiers. I had thought it was just a rumor, but you’re saying your third brother is behind this?" The emperor asked, his gaze skeptical.
