Chapter 154: Chapter 154

David raised his hands to signal Eric, who was approaching him, to stay where he stood.

"Stop asking too many questions; I’ve returned, haven’t I?" He snapped.

"I’m sorry, Your Highness," Eric apologized when he realized the prince seemed to be in a bad mood.

"Follow me to my chambers; I need to give you some instructions," he said and added after a beat,

"Why are you the only present? Where is everyone else?"

"Reporting to the prince, the remaining servants are all in the backyard and are working on digging the tunnel as you instructed; the guards are also there supervising them," Eric said.

"Good. I’ll reward you for keeping up with the good work even in my absence."

"No need to reward me, my prince; I’m always happy to serve you," Eric said, and David nodded.

"Now come with me," David added, as he continued to his main chambers with Eric behind him.

David sat on his bed and winced when his abrupt movements caused him to feel a sharp pain at the left side of his rib.

Eric would have aided his prince and made him lean on him, seeing as he was in pain and limping, but the second prince was someone who disliked it if someone tried to help him. He saw such actions as pity and hated it.

The thing Second Prince David hated most was people seeing him as weak. Thanks to his brother’s abnormal strength, he was always treated like the weak one since childhood, and that comparison, like a slave collar clinging to David, made David feel inferior, causing him to begin to see his eldest brother as his competition.

"Is everything ready for the rebellion in the Southern region?" David asked, breaking Eric from his train of thought.

"Yes, Your Highness, the rebel soldiers in the Southern region have long been ready. They are awaiting your signal before they begin to attack," Eric reported.

"Good, now find some of the maids and make them spread rumors of my return. Make sure to spread it wide so that my father’s servants would hear of it and report to my father," David began.

"Let them spread the news that I went to the Southern region because of whisperings of rebellion but was attacked by the rebel soldiers. I had barely made it out of there alive."

"By the time of evening, after the rumors have spread enough, you will go to the emperor and repeat what I’ve just said. My father would then come here to check on me, and that is when I’ll follow through with the remainder of my plan," David concluded.

"Yes, Your Highness, I’ll go and immediately do what you instructed," Eric said and bowed. He turned and was about to leave when David called out.

"Wait, tell my uncle to come and see me."

"Yes, Your Highness, I’ll tell the minister of war that you want to see him," Eric said respectfully and left Prince David alone.

After David was left alone, a cold look flashed past his eyes. He had been delaying his plans in the Southern region because of Luciana; recognizing her and wanting her for himself had made him put all his plans on hold; it was time he began to focus.

The gold mine in the southern region had brought him a huge amount of fortune; he just needed to stage a coup where his 3rd brother was the mastermind.

At first, his plan was simple: stage a rebellion, kill his third brother, and claim victory as the one who quelled the rebellion.

He would then give all the court ministers he had as allies the go-ahead to force his father to name a crown prince, and with his merits of stopping the coup in time and the vast support he had in court, it would work in his favor, and he would undoubtedly be crowned the next crown prince.

David knew his condition wouldn’t allow him to go to the Southern region now, but it was alright because he had just realized his wounds were all part of heaven’s plan. Even the gods were on his side.

As soon as his father realizes there is going to be an internal uprising, he would send his eldest brother to stop the rebellion and bring his 3rd brother back to the capital for punishment.

His 3rd brother cannot return since he’s just an innocent pawn in his plans, so both his first and third brothers are never going to return, and he would make sure of that.

His eldest brother might be the strongest man there is in the Windermere continent, but he had a weakness, Luciana.

Even if his men are unable to get rid of him, he has another plan up his sleeve to kill Nicholas. Luciana could and would only belong to him.

Dora stood at the entrance to the eldest prince’s residence, feeling anxious about what Amirion had told her a few minutes ago.

"The princess consort drowned and needs urgent medical attention. Prepare her bed, and I’ll go ahead and summon the imperial physician before they arrive," he had said.

Amirion had practically raced with his horse as if he were being chased by the devil in order to get to the palace earlier and get a physician ready and on standby before the prince arrived.

Dora: "Your Highness,"

Amirion: "Your Highness, the imperial physician has already arrived."

Both Dora and Amirion said at the same time.

Dora, who stole a glimpse at the unmoving bundle in the prince’s arms, nearly gasped at what she saw. Her heart skipped a beat seeing that her princess nearly resembled a corpse. She was so pale she couldn’t help but shiver when a negative word surfaced within her.

She pressed her palms against her lips, afraid to cry out loud; she felt her whole body tremble as an unknown fear welled up within her.

’Oh gods, oh heavens, oh deities, whatever creator is up there watching over us, please save my princess,’ Dora inwardly prayed.

She wanted to look the prince in the eye. She wanted to see if his eyes would give her a hint or an answer to all the questions running through her mind, but she was too scared to confirm her negative thoughts, so she kept her head bowed as tears swiveled in her eyes.

Nicholas didn’t even pause at their greeting and silently passed the two of them, heading towards his chambers.

Esther was also standing at the side, looking sad, but she knew the princess might still be alive since the prince was carrying her so carefully with that look on his face that resembled someone holding a precious treasure.

She saw the prince headed in the direction of his estate and wanted to tell him what had happened in their absence.

A visiting calendar had been delivered to her princess, and the empress dowager had requested that the prince’s wives all stay in their assigned quarters and wait for the prince to visit them accordingly.

Even though it didn’t categorically state that the princess wasn’t allowed to stay in the prince’s estate, Dora knew that was the underlying message the empress dowager wanted to pass.

Esther had wanted to stop the prince and tell him to take the princess to Moonlight Palace instead, but she decided against it, seeing how cold the prince looked.

James reached Dora and pulled her to himself; due to the commotion, no one paid attention to them.

"Let’s go and check on them," he said softly.

"My princess... W—what happened...is she..."

"She’s alive, and she will be fine very soon; you already know your princess is strong, right?"

Dora nodded, her tears falling in large drops as she sniffed.

"She will be fine soon. Stop crying," James said and used his thumb to wipe away her tears.

Dora saw what was happening and took a step back, feeling embarrassed. A grown woman like her was crying like a baby in James’ arms; it was too mortifying.

James felt cold as soon as she pulled away from him. He wanted to protest, but he knew this wasn’t the time. His prince needed him now more than ever.

"Let’s go," he said and pulled Dora along with him into the prince’s estate.

"The Princess Consort’s body stayed too long underwater and couldn’t breathe in oxygen for a long time; her situation is quite delicate. If she had stayed one minute longer underwater, we would have lost her, and I regret to add, Your Highness, but I can’t say for sure if she can be saved; I can’t feel the baby’s heartbeat either," the imperial physician narrated.

"Save her; do whatever you can to save her," Nicholas said, his voice calm, too calm, that it was frightening... His eyes were full of emotion, with guilt being the most prominent.

"I would try and save her; I ..."

"Don’t you dare use the "try" word in front of me. You would save her or lose your head while trying," he growled authoritatively, interrupting the physician.
