Rebirth: The New Bride Wants A Divorce-Chapter 181: Dug his own grave
The whole night passed in a haze of unease. Daniel barely got a wink of sleep. No matter how hard he tried, Anna’s words kept replaying in his mind — "DarkKnight_07 wants to be friends with me."
Friends. The word gnawed at him like a splinter that refused to come out.
"Another pair of panda eyes," Henry muttered under his breath from the driver’s seat, glancing at the rearview mirror. Daniel sat in the back, eyes fixed on nothing, completely lost in thought.
Henry sighed quietly. Just why does he want to meet Dr. Jason this early? he wondered. Does he even remember there’s a meeting scheduled at ten?
Still, he knew better than to ask. When Daniel’s mood was like this, even the air seemed to hold its breath.
But as if sensing Henry’s thoughts, Daniel suddenly lifted his gaze. His sharp eyes met Henry’s through the mirror.
"What?" Daniel’s tone was low, clipped.
Henry flinched instantly, nearly choking on his own nerves. "N–Nothing, sir!" he squeaked, snapping his attention back to the road like a startled kitten.
The silence returned, heavy and uncomfortable, until the car finally slowed to a stop in front of a tall glass building.
Daniel stepped out first, buttoning his coat with practiced precision, his expression unreadable. Henry hurried to follow, still wondering what could be so important that Daniel needed to see Dr. Jason at dawn.
Moments later, they walked through the quiet lobby and down the hall toward the doctor’s office — where the real reason behind Daniel’s sleepless night was about to unfold.
"I thought my lessons would finally give you some peace of mind," Dr. Jason remarked, leaning back in his chair as his eyes scanned Daniel’s face. "But judging from those dark circles... I’d say you had a sleepless night. Did your wife throw you out of your room again?"
Ever since Daniel had walked in with Henry, he hadn’t uttered a single word. He just sat there — silent, distant, his brows furrowed as if wrestling with his own thoughts.
Before Daniel could respond, Henry jumped in, waving his hands dramatically. "Oh no, Doctor! Definitely not! I, for one, had a blast with my wife last night — all thanks to your advice."
Jason raised an amused brow as Henry grinned proudly, clearly recalling something he shouldn’t be saying out loud.
"Good to hear that," Jason said with a chuckle, giving him a thumbs up. "At least someone’s making progress."
Then both men turned their attention back to Daniel, who had been uncharacteristically quiet.
When he finally spoke, his words landed like a bomb."I think Anna’s in love with someone."
Jason’s pen froze midair. Henry’s jaw dropped so fast it was almost audible.
"What are you saying, boss?" Henry blurted, his voice a mix of shock and disbelief. He looked like someone had just poured boiling oil into his ears.
Jason, recovering quicker, adjusted his glasses and leaned forward, his tone calm but serious. "What makes you think that? How can you be so sure, Daniel?"
He had honestly believed Daniel had started making real progress with his wife — that the distance between them was shrinking. But now, hearing this, even he wasn’t sure what to think.
Daniel didn’t respond immediately. His gaze was distant, his jaw tight.
Henry, however, was practically bouncing with nerves. "Wait, wait, wait—sir, please tell me it’s not Ethan Helmsworth, right?" he asked, sliding to Daniel’s side like an anxious child.
Jason frowned, confused. "Ethan Helmsworth?"
"Yes!" Henry nodded frantically. "Her costar — the handsome one! The internet’s losing its mind over their pairing. I’ve seen the photos. The man looks like he walked straight out of a romance drama!"
Jason shot him a look, but Henry wasn’t done.
"I mean, I swore I’d help you win her heart, boss," Henry continued dramatically. "But if it’s that guy... we might be in trouble."
Jason pinched the bridge of his nose, muttering something under his breath, while Daniel’s expression remained unreadable except for the faint, dangerous edge that flickered in his eyes.
Henry kept talking — and talking — completely unaware of the storm brewing beside him. His words flowed without filter, a mix of worry and drama, until the temperature in the room seemed to drop.
Jason, mid-scribble, suddenly paused and rubbed his arms. "Why is it suddenly cold in here?" he muttered, frowning.
That was when Henry noticed it too. The shift. The stillness.
He turned his head slowly... and froze.
Daniel wasn’t saying a word, but his presence alone was enough to send a chill down Henry’s spine. His face was unreadable — calm, yes, but the kind of calm that promised danger.
’T-The devil’s angry,’ Henry thought, panic flashing across his face. His legs began to tremble under the table as if they were no longer his own.
Jason blinked, sensing the tension. "Daniel—"
But before he could finish, Henry’s survival instincts kicked in. He sat up straight, hands raised in surrender, and made a zipping motion across his lips, a silent promise to shut up immediately.
He even swallowed hard for good measure, forcing a shaky smile that didn’t reach his eyes.
Inside, though, he was screaming. God, am I being thrown into hell already? I just wanted to help!
For a long moment, silence reigned. The only sound was the faint ticking of the wall clock.
Finally, Daniel exhaled slow, steady. The sharpness in his eyes softened, if only slightly, as he leaned back in his chair.
Jason and Henry exchanged a cautious glance, both knowing they’d barely dodged a bullet.
But whatever thought had crossed Daniel’s mind in that icy silence... hadn’t vanished. It was still there simmering quietly behind that calm, dangerous expression.
"Daniel, can you please be clear and not scare us like that?" Jason finally managed, summoning every ounce of courage he had left.
But the moment Daniel’s expression twitched just slightly, Jason’s confidence wavered, and he gulped hard.
He might be Daniel’s friend, but that didn’t make him immune to the man’s unnerving aura. Daniel’s calm could freeze the air itself — cold enough to make years pass unnoticed.
When Daniel finally spoke, his voice was quiet... too quiet. "Anna likes DarkKnight_07."
Jason blinked once. Then twice.
"..."
Meanwhile, Henry looked like he’d just witnessed a murder. His eyes went wide, his mouth fell open, and his hand gripped the armrest like it was a lifeline.
"B–Boss... what—who—Dark—WHAT?!" he stammered, nearly toppling over from his chair.
Jason, still processing, exhaled slowly, rubbing his temples. "Okay... just to clarify," he said cautiously, "are you saying your wife is interested in someone who calls himself DarkKnight_07?"
Daniel’s silence was answer enough. But what came next nearly made Jason choke on his own words.
"Boss..." Henry began cautiously, blinking as if to make sure he’d heard right. "Are you telling us that you’re... jealous of yourself?"
The room fell dead silent.
Daniel’s jaw tightened. His eyes — already cold — turned glacial, frosty white with barely restrained irritation. If looks could kill, Jason’s office would have been an arctic wasteland by now.
Jason froze mid-breath, instinctively leaning back in his chair, both hands raised in silent surrender. "Henry—" he started, but it was too late.
Henry’s words were already hanging in the air like a death sentence.
Daniel’s glare shifted toward him, sharp and dangerous enough to make the poor man’s soul consider leaving his body.
’Oh no,’ Henry thought, stiff as a statue. Just what in the world am I witnessing right now?
He swallowed hard, his thoughts racing in pure panic.
God, if I blink, will my boss still be human — or will he turn into an ice monster?
His eyes darted to Jason, silently begging for help, but Jason only gave him a look that screamed, You dug your own grave.
The only sound that followed was the faint hum of the air conditioner — or maybe that was just the temperature dropping another few degrees under Daniel’s icy stare.
