Rebirth: My Reclusive Husband Helps Me Get Revenge!-Chapter 40: Too good at being you
Lixue nodded, she thought she had gotten past this but she realized the Yu family still affected her as much as they did in the past.
"I think I need a glass of water and some fresh air..."
"Should I?"
"No...I want to be alone for a while.."
Lixue rolled out of the bed and walked out of the room, when she got downstairs, she downed a glass of water and walked to the front door.
The crisp night air greeted Lixue as she stepped outside, her bare feet brushing against the cool tiles of the porch. The moon hung high in the sky, its light casting a silver glow over the villa’s grounds. She wrapped her arms around herself, shivering slightly but relishing the calm that came with being outside.
"It’s such a beautiful night," she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper. "Why do I get such dreams?"
The villa felt like a safe haven, far from the chaos and hurt of her past. She let her feet guide her as she strolled aimlessly, eventually finding herself in a small garden tucked away at the side of the house.
Her eyes lit up when she saw the swing—a simple wooden seat suspended by sturdy ropes tied to a tree branch. The sight was unexpected, and it brought a faint smile to her face. Without thinking, she approached it and sat down, her fingers grazing the ropes as she pushed herself gently.
The soft creak of the swing filled the quiet night. Lixue leaned back, letting the breeze tousle her hair as she closed her eyes. Her mind drifted to the times when she was younger, back when things were simpler.
When it was just her and her mother...
A tune escaped her lips—soft, familiar, and bittersweet. It was the song her mother used to hum when she was little, a melody that always seemed to soothe her no matter how chaotic the world felt.
"La, la, la..." she hummed, her voice carrying through the still air.
The garden seemed to come alive around her, the flowers swaying as if dancing to her song, the leaves rustling in quiet applause. For a moment, she forgot the weight of her dreams, the ache in her heart. She was just Lixue, sitting on a swing, singing a song from a time when life felt a little less heavy.
When she finally stopped, the silence wrapped around her like a comforting blanket. She stayed there for a while longer, letting the peace of the moment seep into her.
Eventually, she stood and made her way back to the villa. As she entered the living room, the sight of Mo Ran startled her. He was sitting on the couch, his laptop open, the glow of the screen illuminating his sharp features. He looked up as soon as he heard her footsteps.
"Come here," he said, his tone gentle but firm.
Lixue hesitated for a second before nodding and walking toward him. She felt a pang of guilt for leaving the room earlier, but Mo Ran didn’t seem upset. 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝘦𝓌𝑒𝑏𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝘭.𝒸𝘰𝑚
"What were you doing outside?" he asked, closing his laptop and setting it aside.
"I found a little garden with a swing," she said softly, sitting down on the couch beside him. "It’s beautiful out there."
Mo Ran studied her for a moment, his eyes searching hers. "I made it to hang out with my wife one day, I’m glad she likes it and you were humming too"
Lixue blinked, surprised. "You heard that?"
He nodded. "The garden isn’t far from the room, I saw you sitting on the swing, looking more beautiful than moonlight."
She smiled faintly, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. "It’s a song my mother used to sing to me. It always made me feel safe."
Mo Ran reached out, his hand covering hers. "Does it still?"
She glanced at their joined hands, then back at him. "It does. A little."
"Your hands are cold...let me warm them up.."
Lixue sighed with a smile, he was so different from her past life, was it okay? Or had she not notice he was the same as her past life.
"It’s past 2, we should be asleep.."
Mo Ran glanced at the clock when she said this, he looked at his laptop and sighed.
He was having a conference meeting now, with the Mo branch in country C, he had placed the call on hold when Lixue came in.
"Let’s go back to the room, I’ll be with you until you fall asleep.."
Lixue nodded, as Mo Ran stood up, holding his laptop in one hand and holding Lixue with his other hand.
Lixue allowed Mo Ran to guide her back to the bedroom, her hand tucked securely in his. His grip was firm but gentle, as if silently reassuring her that she wasn’t alone. As they entered the room, she hesitated, glancing at him.
"You don’t have to stay. I’ll be fine," she said softly, though her voice lacked conviction.
Mo Ran set his laptop down on the nightstand, the screen still glowing faintly. "I said I’ll stay until you fall asleep. Don’t argue, wifey."
She sighed, too tired to fight him. Sliding into bed, she pulled the duvet up to her chin and watched as Mo Ran pulled a chair from the corner of the room and placed it beside the bed. He sat down, his laptop balanced on his lap once more.
"You’re really just going to sit there and work?" she asked, raising an eyebrow.
He glanced at her, a small smirk playing on his lips. "You think I’d leave you to face your nightmares alone?"
Her heart skipped a beat at his words, and she quickly turned away, pretending to adjust her pillow. "Suit yourself."
The room was silent except for the faint clicking of Mo Ran’s keyboard. Lixue tried to close her eyes and relax, but her thoughts wouldn’t stop racing. The dream had stirred up emotions she thought she’d buried, and now, lying here with Mo Ran so close, she couldn’t help but feel conflicted.
After a few minutes, she spoke again, her voice hesitant. "Mo Ran?"
"Yes?" His reply came without missing a beat, though he paused his typing to look at her.
"Do you think..." She faltered, unsure how to phrase her question. "Do you think it’s possible to let go of the past completely? To stop it from affecting you?"
Mo Ran leaned back in the chair, his gaze thoughtful. "It’s not easy," he admitted. "The past shapes who we are, whether we like it or not. But it doesn’t have to define our future."
His words were simple, but they struck a chord in her. "What if it’s not just memories? What if it’s people? People who won’t let you move on?"
His jaw tightened slightly, and for a moment, Lixue thought she saw a flicker of something dark in his eyes. "Then you take back control," he said firmly. "You don’t let them hold power over you. Not anymore and not when you have me."
She stared at him, her heart pounding. Mo Ran spoke with such conviction, as if he knew exactly what it felt like to wrestle with a past that refused to let go.
"I don’t know if I’m strong enough," she whispered.
"You are," he said without hesitation. "And if you ever feel like you’re not, I’ll be here to remind you."
Her chest tightened, and she felt tears pricking at the corners of her eyes. She quickly turned her face into the pillow, unwilling to let him see. "You’re too good at this, you know," she mumbled.
"Good at what?"
"Being...you."
He chuckled softly, and the sound was warm, almost comforting. "Get some rest, wifey. You’ve had a long day."
Lixue didn’t respond, but as she lay there, her body slowly relaxing, she felt a strange sense of comfort in his presence.
But then she heard the familiar tone of a video call connecting.
Lixue froze, her curiosity piqued.
"Good evening," Mo Ran’s voice greeted someone on the other end. It was calm yet commanding.
"President Mo, thank you for joining us at this hour once again," a deep voice replied. "As I was saying earlier, we’ve encountered complications with the Country C project."
Lixue blinked, realizing this wasn’t just casual work. This was a full-blown business meeting—at nearly 3 AM.
"We’ve already discussed the contingencies," Mo Ran responded coolly, leaning back in his chair. "Explain why those weren’t implemented immediately."
There was a slight pause. "The suppliers claimed logistical challenges, sir. Their response times have been—"
"Unacceptable," Mo Ran interrupted, his tone like steel. "I don’t want excuses. Either they meet the terms of the contract, or we replace them. This is non-negotiable."
His voice carried such weight that Lixue shivered slightly. She had never seen this side of him before—cold, decisive and utterly unflinching.
As the meeting continued, Lixue sat up in bed, unable to stop herself from listening.
"I want this resolved by the end of the week," Mo Ran said, his tone leaving no room for argument. "If you encounter any further delays, further it directly to me."
"Yes, sir," the voice on the call replied quickly.
Mo Ran’s eyes flickered toward Lixue briefly as if sensing her gaze. He smirked faintly before focusing back on the screen.
"We’ll reconvene tomorrow for updates," he concluded, then ended the call without waiting for a response.
Closing his laptop, Mo Ran turned back to Lixue, his demeanor softening instantly. "You’re still awake?."
"I didn’t know you had such an important meeting," Lixue said, her voice quieter now. "Why didn’t you tell me?"
Mo Ran stood, walking over to the bed and sitting on the edge. "Because it’s not important to you."
