Chapter 14 - 14 Doubts Arising

"Really?" Tang Mingli elongated his tone, scrutinizing Tang Yue with seriousness. The girl, now in Senior High School, had already grown into a young lady. When she first arrived at the Tang Family, she was but a three-year-old toddler. Nowadays, she had blossomed into a graceful young lady.

"Of course, it's true." Tang Yue nodded with certainty, explaining, "Look, clothing, food, housing, and transport are essential for everyone. If you go into business in these areas, you can't go wrong."

"What else?" Tang Mingli's eyes lit up.

Tang Yue had some suspicions in her heart. It seemed that Mr. Wang was definitely persuading her uncle to venture into those businesses.

Clothes, visible and not requiring too much initial investment.

Food, probably not very likely either.

That left only housing and transport.

After pondering for a while, Tang Yue spoke up, "Let's take housing for example."

As she spoke, Tang Yue discreetly observed Tang Mingli's expression. Seeing his eyes brighten even more, she felt assured and continued, "There are many houses in the county, but there will certainly be development in the future. More people coming to the county means a greater need for housing."

"Xiao Yue, you really understand these things," Tang Mingli said excitedly. "Wang Gui said the same thing as you."

Wang Gui, it seemed to be that Mr. Wang.

Pretending to be confused, Tang Yue asked, "Uncle, is Wang Gui also suggesting that you join him in the real estate business?"

"Yes," Tang Mingli was now keen to discuss this with Tang Yue. "Xiao Yue, I'll tell you the truth. These days, I've been visiting many places around the county with Wang Gui. If we buy land for real estate development, we are sure to make money in the future."

"Uncle, buying land and building houses requires a significant amount of money," Tang Yue cautioned.

"Does it? But Wang Gui said investing just US$ 500 is enough," Tang Mingli boasted, completely absorbed in his dreams of making big money. He failed to notice Tang Yue's expression, which seemed a bit odd.

"Uncle, with US$ 500 to buy land and build houses, could you have been scammed?" Tang Yue couldn't help asking, "The cost of a house nowadays starts at thousands of dollars, right?"

"Nonsense, can your little uncle be scammed?" Tang Mingli, caring about his face, couldn't accept being duped and elaborated on the matter.

After listening, Tang Yue felt that Mr. Wang's ability to talk big was formidable. She said, "Uncle, if Mr. Wang really had that much money to buy land and build houses, would he still need your US$ 500? Besides, even if you invest US$ 500, waiting for the houses to be built and then getting profits, who knows which year and month that would be?"

"Uncle, I know you've saved some money, but aren't you saving it for marriage? You want to earn money through this, but if the housing project is slow, won't it take many years?"

Tang Yue appealed to his emotions and reasoning, "Moreover, if he's so rich, why would he need your few hundred dollars? Just by a word, is that land truly his? If he really buys it for building houses, have you seen any documents? Without seeing anything, how do you know whether it's real or fake?"

Just as Tang Mingli was about to speak, Tang Yue interjected, "Uncle, don't say you've seen it. We have never seen those documents; how would you know if they're real or fake?"

"If you put all your savings into it and can't recover the investment for years, what will you do if you want to find a little aunt to marry in these years? What will you use for the wedding?" Tang Yue's words hit him one by one.

Tang Mingli was initially unconcerned, but upon reflection, her points made sense.

He calmed down and realized that Wang Gui had only talked about the profits after the houses were built. But if it really took years to build the houses... Furthermore, with the costs of land purchase and construction, would he invest tens of thousands, even hundreds of thousands of dollars? Would they lack his US$ 500?

He had indeed visited the land, but as Tang Yue had said, just by saying the land was his, did it become his?

Was that document even real?

One doubt after another surfaced in his mind. Details that he had not paid attention to before now seemed suspicious when he thought about them.

"Uncle, I also hope you make a lot of money, and then as your niece, I'll get to share a bit of the glory too. However, if you're scammed, those US$ 500 are not a small sum," Tang Yue reminded him, noticing his concern had been piqued. She changed the subject, "By the way, Uncle, I think opening a clothing store or a breakfast place in the county can make good money too."

"For example, clothes are getting prettier. Not just others, but even people from our village no longer only buy new clothes during festivals. Nowadays, they're willing to buy clothes anytime," Tang Yue added, "Uncle, since you're often in the county, you should see even more than I do."

"That seems true," Tang Mingli considered after giving it some thought, still pondering whether Wang Gui's proposal was real. He then said, "Xiao Yue, it's getting late. You should head back to school."

"Oh, Uncle, always think twice before acting, that's the safest way," Tang Yue added one last piece of advice.

"Mhm." Tang Mingli nodded, and noting the time, he said, "It's not too early. Let me take you back to school; it's a bit of a distance from here to your school."

"No need, I can find my way back," Tang Yue waved at him, gestured 'keep it up', and ran towards the Number One High School.

She had spoken her piece, and Tang Mingli had begun to doubt. Surely, her uncle wouldn't be so foolish next?

Tang Yue wasn't completely sure and thought she should check on her uncle again next weekend.

She decided to take a shortcut as the main road was a longer route. She remembered there was an alleyway here that led to the back gate of the school.

The alley was dim and deserted. As Tang Yue hastily walked through, thinking of returning to school and visiting the library that evening to catch up on the studies she had missed in the past three years.

Her English was the best, almost as good as her mother tongue, especially since she had worked as a translator.

But her Chinese and Math, as well as other subjects, were just average. Plus, with the decades that had passed, she couldn't do the homework without reviewing.

Engrossed in her thoughts, Tang Yue paid no attention to the few shady-looking men who appeared up ahead in the alley. Her heart tightened as she spotted them and she mentally kicked herself for being so careless as to take a shortcut just for the sake of convenience.

Without thinking, Tang Yue turned and ran, only to encounter another person approaching.

Oh no!

How could her luck be so bad?

Tang Yue grumbled inwardly but figured that facing one person was better than three or four behind her. Slowly approaching the lone figure, she gasped, "Mr. Mo."

Tang Yue saw him as a savior, and her hesitant steps immediately quickened.
