Chapter 106 -103 Different Treatment
“Classmate, are you also from the Physics Department?”
A girl with thick glasses perched on her nose stood up to greet Song Jiawen.
Song Jiawen nodded, “Yes, Physics Class One, Song Jiawen.”
“Nice to meet you, Song Jiawen. My name is Liang Yujun, from Physics Class Three.”
The girl was not tall, with a round face and a slightly plump figure, smiling and waving her hand, “I’m in Class Two, Ding Yuanyuan.”
“Sha Yali, from Class Four.” A girl with short hair, a melon-seeded face, and big eyes promptly added.
The four girls finished introducing themselves and were momentarily stunned, realizing they were each from a different class, with none in the same one.
Liang Yujun adjusted her glasses and confidently stated, “They definitely did this on purpose. There are so few girls in the Physics Department, they spread us out to make it look more even.”
The girl named Sha Yali pointed to Song Jiawen and then to a middle-aged woman making her bed, saying, “Mom, look at Song Jiawen, she’s so pretty and she chose Physics, yet you always say I shouldn’t have chosen this major.”
“Her being pretty and choosing Physics, how does that directly relate to your choice?”
Mother Sha sat on the bed and glanced at her daughter, snorting coldly, “Are you pretty, or do you just have a lot of hair?”
“A lot of hair?”
Mother Liang, curious, asked Mother Sha, “Why does she need a lot of hair?”
Mother Sha pointed at her daughter’s head and said irritably, “Every time she does a physics problem, one hand is holding a pen and the other is grabbing her hair. Once she’s done with the problems, the desk is littered with hair; it’s like she’s exchanging her hair for answers. At this rate, how much hair will be enough for her to spare?
Finally got into college, and she insists on choosing Physics, I worry if after four years, I’ll have a bald daughter, no, she might not even wait for four years, she could be bald next year.”
“Hahaha….”
All the other parents in the room started laughing.
Taking advantage of the others’ conversation, Song Jiawen placed her belongings by the remaining bed near the door and whispered to Jiang Yan, “You go back and sort things out, I can handle this by myself.”
Jiang Yan, seeing there were so many people in the dorm and not really able to get involved, placed her suitcase in front of the desk and the bedding on the bed, similarly whispered back, “Then I’m leaving? See you at the door.”
“Mhm.”
Jiang Yan turned to leave.
Seeing the young man who had been helping Song Jiawen leave, the mothers surmised he might be a sophomore or junior assigned to welcome and guide new students.
Mother Ding, curious, asked Song Jiawen, “Classmate Song, did you come to school by yourself? Your parents didn’t come?”
Song Jiawen turned around and honestly replied, “My uncle and aunt are both teachers, and since school is also starting these days, they couldn’t take time off. But I’m not alone, I came with a classmate.”
However, the latter part of her statement was automatically ignored by the mothers; they only heard the first part, interpreting from her words, uncle and aunt don’t have time? So, what about her parents?
The mothers exchanged glances, each forming a certain speculation in their minds.
Mother Liang saw Song Jiawen spreading out her bedding as if to make the bed and hurriedly stepped forward to stop her, “The bedding they just issued has a bit of a smell, and there’s sunshine outside, perfect for airing them out on the balcony. Give it to me, I’ll take it out for you.”
After finishing her sentence, she snatched the bedding from her hand and turned to instruct Jiang Yan’s father, “Get a mat for Song Jia Wen.”
Jiang Yan’s father hurriedly took out a military-green mat from the large, army-green bag next to him. Before he could hand it over, Ding Yuanyuan’s mother came over with a cloth, “First wipe it down, the bed should be wiped before laying out the mat, and then it’s better to place the mat on top.”
Without further ado, she climbed onto Song Jia Wen’s bed, swiftly cleaned it with a few quick wipes, then wiped down the cool bamboo mat before laying it out, and finally took the mat handed over by Jiang Yan’s father and spread it on top.
It fit just right, neither too big nor too small.
“My dad brought four, one for each of us in the dormitory. You see, Ding Yuanyuan and Sha Yali have already laid theirs out,” Liang Yukun hastily explained, worried Song Jia Wen would feel burdened.
Several parents moved very quickly, and initially, Song Jia Wen was too dazed to react, but when she saw Sha Yali’s mother coming over with a basin to wipe down her desk and chair, she quickly reached out to take it, “Auntie, let me do it.”
“Oh dear, Auntie has already started, so you don’t need to get involved. Go on, go eat with Yali and the others over there, it’s all specialities from South City, try them and see if you like them, and if you do, Auntie will send some to you later.”
A warm current quietly flowed through Song Jia Wen’s heart, and she looked at the mothers and whispered a “thank you.”
“This child, it’s no big deal. You girls look out for Sha Yali for me, and if she starts pulling her hair again, tie her hands together. And let me tell you, Sha Yali, don’t you give me that cheeky grin. If I see a single hair missing from your head when you come home for the winter break, I’ll go to your school and have your major changed by your teacher.”
With these words from Sha Yali’s mother, the atmosphere in the room immediately became lively again.
Several mothers working together had cleaned Song Jia Wen’s bed, desk, and wardrobe in no time, with Ding Yuanyuan’s mother even laying a cloth in the closet and helping her fold and store the clothes from her suitcase neatly inside.
Sha Yali’s mother also washed the bed sheets and quilt cover provided by the school, then hung them out to dry on the balcony.
During the whole process, Song Jia Wen only sorted her clothes and arranged her calligraphy brushes, ink, and other Chinese painting supplies on her desk. She did little else.
She felt quite lucky to have been assigned to this dormitory and to have met such roommates and their kind and friendly parents.
….
Song Jia Wen was lucky, but Jiang Yan, on the other side, was laboriously cleaning the dormitory.
After he dropped off Song Jia Wen, there was still nobody in their dormitory.
He wiped down his own bed and desk first. He didn’t even think to air out his bedding on the balcony, just wiping the cool bamboo mat a couple more times before laying it on the bed, then casually threw the bedding on top to finish.
Once the desk and wardrobe were wiped, he laid out a couple of newspapers inside the wardrobe. Then he took the clothes from his suitcase, arranged them a bit, and tossed them all inside.
He would have let it be at that, but turning around and seeing the messy dormitory and the somewhat dirty floor made him frown.

Thinking that Song Jia Wen wouldn’t be done so quickly, he decided to go to the balcony to get a broom and start sweeping.
But the moment he stepped onto the balcony, he froze. What the hell… was this place even fit for humans?
He remembered when he had just taken Song Jia Wen to her dormitory. Although it was crowded, the ground was clean, and the desks and chairs were tidy, making the entire dormitory look cool and bright.
But it was only in his own dormitory that he realized just how different dormitories could be!
The balcony was piled with old books, worn-out shoes, tattered pants, cigarette butts, and yellow sticky substances in two corners, emitting an indescribable scent….
He had originally thought the male dormitory at a top institution would be different from those in third-rate colleges, but he had been too optimistic. After all, males of the species were the same all over the country.
