Chapter 9: A Request from mom

Adan sat in his chair, staring at the glowing interface of the system with a mixture of exhaustion and determination. His muscles were sore, every movement a painful reminder of his morning's exertion. But the unfinished quest loomed large, its text flashing in a taunting rhythm that seemed to mock his sluggishness.

"This system... it's out to get me," he muttered, leaning back and letting his head fall against the chair. Despite his complaints, the idea of losing a hard-earned stat point was unbearable. With a resigned sigh, Adan stretched his legs, wincing at the stiffness in his thighs. "Alright, let's do this."

The remaining tasks weren't going to complete themselves. Jumping jacks, burpees, and planks? The system might as well have signed him up for military training. Still, he couldn't deny the strange sense of purpose it gave him. Before, his mornings were an endless haze of sleep-ins and laziness. Now, he had... goals. Painful, sweat-inducing goals, but goals nonetheless.

He glanced at the clock. 9:05 AM. "Plenty of time to finish this before noon," he thought optimistically, cracking his knuckles. "Let's get it over with."

Adan stepped back into his small living room, clearing the coffee table to make space. His mother's voice echoed in his mind: "Don't burn the house down." He chuckled. "She'd never let me hear the end of it if I knocked over a lamp doing burpees."

Starting with the jumping jacks, he clapped his hands overhead in a steady rhythm. "One, two, three..." His voice trailed off as his muscles screamed in protest. By the time he hit fifty, sweat dripped down his forehead, and his breaths came in shallow gasps.

[Daily Quest]

• 100/100 Jumping Jacks (completed)

---

"Alright, one down!" he cheered, collapsing onto the couch. He didn't stay there long, though. The glowing red "Failure Warning" at the bottom of the system window was enough to push him back up.

Next were the burpees. "Why did it have to be burpees?" he groaned. Adan had done push-ups, planks, and jumping jacks in his school PT class before, but burpees were entirely new territory. Each movement felt like uncharted pain—his arms trembled with every push-up, and his legs felt like jelly as he jumped back up. By the time he finished, he was sprawled on the floor, staring at the ceiling with a glazed look of utter exhaustion.

---

[Daily Quest]

• 30/30 Burpees (completed)

---

Adan rolled onto his stomach, propping himself up on his elbows. "Last one," he muttered, glaring at the plank task like it was a personal enemy.

[0/1-Minute Plank (x3)]

The first plank started strong. Adan clenched his fists, keeping his back straight and his core tight. By the thirty-second mark, he was trembling like a leaf in a storm.

"Just... thirty more seconds," he grunted, sweat dripping onto the carpet. When the timer hit a minute, he collapsed face-first onto the floor.

"Two more? Are you kidding me?" he whined, rolling onto his back.

The second and third planks were an exercise in sheer willpower. His body screamed at him to stop, but the threat of losing agility pushed him forward. When he finally finished, he lay on the floor, his chest heaving as he gasped for air.

A soft chime echoed in the room, followed by a new notification.

Adan blinked at the screen, a small smile tugging at his lips.

"100 EXP and a stat point? Totally worth it," he muttered, though his aching body begged to differ. "And I got a bonus too..., system is not that bad huh?". He said with happy smile on his face, feeling fulfilled after getting a bonus reward.

He pulled up his status window, curious to see his progress.

Adan hovered over the "Allocate" button, his finger hesitating just above it. For the first time, a small icon of a stat window adjustment appeared beside it, glowing faintly. "So, I finally get to use this," he muttered, his mind already racing through possibilities.

He tapped on the stat menu, revealing a detailed breakdown. "Where should I allocate it?" he wondered aloud. Playing countless RPGs had taught him that every decision in character builds mattered.

"Agility makes sense," he mused, scratching his chin. "More speed and reflexes would definitely help me avoid punches from not just Jason but anyone else who thought they could push me around."

The memory of Jason brought an involuntary shudder. That cruel laughter and the precision of his fists flashed vividly in Adan's mind. "Not this time," he said firmly, the resolve hardening in his voice.

Still, he hesitated. He vividly recalled the pain he'd endured after his agility increased by just one point previously. It wasn't just a boost; it felt like his body was forcibly reconfiguring itself.

"What if this is worse?" The thought made him clench his fists. For a moment, fear held him back. "What if I can't handle it?"

He shook his head, steeling his nerves. "No, I have to do this. Pain is temporary, but getting stronger is worth it." With a deep breath, he tapped the button to allocate the stat point into agility.

The effect was immediate and intense. A searing pain radiated from his core, spreading outwards. His muscles burned, his bones ached, and his entire body felt like it was being stretched and reshaped. Adan clenched his teeth, his fingers digging into his palms to endure the agony.

After what felt like an eternity but was likely just seconds, the pain subsided. Adan gasped, beads of sweat dripping down his forehead. He flexed his fingers, noticing the subtle changes. His limbs felt lighter, his movements smoother. He tested his balance with a quick step forward, then back. "Whoa," he breathed, a grin breaking across his face. "That was worth it."

The system chimed, pulling his attention back to the glowing screen. A notification popped up, marking his successful allocation. and he sees that he got a skill, but he was sweating really hard, and his clothes were drenched in sweat.

Adan groaned, feeling the sweat soaking through his shirt. He glanced at the clock again. "A shower first," he muttered, dragging himself to the bathroom.

Stripping off his damp clothes, he stepped under the hot spray, letting the water wash away the day's exertion. His muscles loosened slightly under the warmth, and he sighed in relief.

Once refreshed, he wrapped a towel around himself and returned to his room, his wet hair sticking to his forehead. Just as he was about to collapse onto the bed, his phone buzzed.

He glanced at the screen. It was his mom.

"Hey, Mom," he answered, leaning against the doorframe.

"Adan, are you busy?" her familiar voice asked, warm but with a hint of urgency.

"Not really," he replied. "What's up?"

"I need you to do me a favor," she said. "There's an important folder on the desk in my home office. Can you bring it to me at work? I forgot it this morning, and I need it for a meeting."

Adan glanced at the time and nodded, even though she couldn't see him. "Sure, I'll bring it over."

"Thanks, sweetheart. And don't take too long, okay? I need it before my meeting starts in an hour," she added, her voice slightly muffled, probably from the chatter of her coworkers in the background.

"Got it," Adan said, glancing at his wardrobe. His damp, sweat-soaked workout clothes were clearly out of the question. "I'll head over in a bit."

"Great. It's the black folder labeled 'Q3 Projections.' It's on the desk in my office. You know where that is, right?"

"Yeah, I know. Don't worry, I'll find it," he assured her, already moving toward his closet.

"Thanks, Adan. You're a lifesaver. Love you!"

"Love you too, Mom," he replied before the call ended.

As he tossed the phone onto his bed, a soft chime echoed in his ears. The familiar glowing system interface materialized before him, displaying a new notification.

[New Quest Received!]

• Important Delivery Description: Retrieve the black folder labeled "Q3 Projections" from your mother's home office and deliver it safely to her workplace.

• Rewards: 50 Exp, 1 Inventory Slot Upgrade Bonus Objective: Deliver the folder within 30 minutes (Reward: +10 Exp)

• Note: Beware of potential obstacles along the way.

---

Adan blinked at the screen, a mix of curiosity and irritation bubbling up. "Potential obstacles? It's a folder delivery, not a heist," he muttered, pulling a clean T-shirt over his head. Still, the idea of earning experience points and an inventory upgrade made his lips twitch into a smirk. "Alright, System. Let's see what you've got for me this time."

He quickly slipped into a pair of jeans and laced up his sneakers before heading out of his room. The hallway leading to his mother's home office was dimly lit, sunlight peeking through the drawn curtains. Adan's mind wandered as he walked, the faint hum of the system interface still lingering in the back of his mind.

His mother's office was a small, organized space tucked into the corner of their house. It was a blend of professionalism and personality—neatly stacked documents, a sleek laptop docked at the center of the desk, and framed family photos lining the shelves. He spotted the black folder almost immediately, sitting exactly where she said it would be.

"That was easy," Adan said, reaching for the folder.

The moment his fingers touched it, the system chimed again.

---

[Warning: Quest Difficulty Increased]

New Objective: Secure the folder and avoid damage during delivery. Unforeseen challenges may arise.

---

Adan froze, the hairs on the back of his neck standing on end. "What do you mean, 'unforeseen challenges'?" he muttered, clutching the folder tighter. His eyes darted around the room as if expecting something to leap out at him.

Shrugging off the unease, he tucked the folder under his arm and headed for the door. Outside, the cool morning air greeted him, a stark contrast to the warmth of the house. He hopped onto his bike parked by the driveway, a trusty old thing with squeaky brakes but reliable wheels.

(A/N: Yes, he had Bike, I already said that, but Rich Kids are different!!, and he is not even his High School Yet!)

"Thirty minutes," Adan reminded himself, glancing at the system timer hovering in the corner of his vision. "Plenty of time."

The ride started smoothly. The streets were quiet, save for the occasional jogger or car passing by. Adan pedaled with a steady rhythm, the folder secured in his backpack. His thoughts wandered to the stats he had just improved. He could already feel the difference—his movements were more fluid, his reflexes sharper. Even balancing on the bike felt easier than usual.

Then it happened.

A group of rowdy teens on electric scooters sped past him, their laughter ringing out as one of them turned abruptly, nearly colliding with him. Adan swerved, narrowly avoiding a fall. "Watch where you're going!" he shouted, his heart pounding.

The teens didn't stop, their laughter fading into the distance. Adan shook his head, muttering curses under his breath. "Unforeseen challenges, huh? That's what you meant?"

He pushed forward, pedaling faster. The office wasn't far now, just a few more blocks. As he turned onto a busier street, a sharp bark caught his attention. He glanced over his shoulder to see a stray dog bounding toward him, its eyes locked on his backpack.

"You've got to be kidding me!" Adan groaned, pedaling harder. The dog barked again, its pace quickening. It wasn't massive, but it was fast—and persistent.

Adan weaved through pedestrians, narrowly avoiding a collision with a man carrying groceries. "Sorry!" he called out, his focus shifting back to the dog. It was gaining on him, its teeth bared.

"Alright, System," he panted, "any tips here?"

A notification popped up.

---

[Tip Unlocked!]

• Use agility to outmaneuver the threat. Speed is key.

---

"Helpful," Adan muttered sarcastically, but he couldn't deny the logic. Taking a sharp turn down a side street, he leaned into the bike, his improved agility allowing him to maintain control. The dog skidded slightly, losing ground but not giving up.

Adan spotted a small alleyway up ahead, just wide enough for his bike. "This better work," he muttered, veering into the narrow passage.

The dog hesitated at the entrance before barking again and giving chase. But the confined space worked to Adan's advantage. He pedaled harder, his breath coming in short bursts, and emerged onto a quieter street.

Glancing over his shoulder, he saw the dog slowing down, its tongue lolling out as it finally gave up the chase. Adan let out a relieved laugh, his heart still racing.

"Unforeseen challenges, my ass," he said, slowing his pace.

The office building came into view, its sleek glass exterior reflecting the morning sun. Adan hopped off his bike, wiping the sweat from his brow. He checked the timer—five minutes to spare.

Inside, the receptionist greeted him with a warm smile. "You're here to see your mom, right?"

"Yeah," Adan said, holding up the folder. "She left this at home."

"She's in the conference room on the second floor," the receptionist said.

Adan nodded and took the elevator up. When he reached the conference room, he spotted his mother through the glass doors. She looked up as he entered, her face lighting up with relief.

"Adan! Thank you so much," she said, taking the folder from him.

"Don't mention it," he replied, still catching his breath.

As he stepped back into the elevator, the system chimed once more.

Adan smiled as the elevator doors closed. Today had been anything but ordinary, and something told him this was just the beginning.
