Rael whistled, getting Jane’s attention.

"There’s an intruder ahead," he said. "Wake Minos up and grab the staff."

Jane flinched, then sprang into action.

As for him, he picked up his sword from the nearby table and held it behind his back as he approached the door.

The heartbeat was just as loud as when he first heard it, and it quickened the closer he got.

But as he placed his hand on the steel doorknob, preparing to swing the door open, he realized something.

There was a faint trace of fear that echoed with every heartbeat.

Rael’s eyes widened as he focused on that feeling, and soon, the emotions of the person on the other side of the door bled through.

Unease, panic, fear, determination.

They seemed like a good person, judging by the other minor emotions he felt.

But I won’t naively follow that feeling, Rael thought, gripping his sword tighter as he pushed the steel door open with a creak.

To his surprise, what greeted him was a teenage child wearing a doctor’s robe.

The robe was clearly too big for the boy, yet he still stared up at Rael with innocent eyes.

"Hi... I felt that someone was injured here..." the boy mumbled, evaluating Rael. "Do you want me to heal you?"

Rael raised a brow. "For free?"

The boy nodded. "For free."

A moment of silence ensued as the two stared at each other.

I’m not believing for even a second that this pipsqueak managed to survive. Not only that, he’s going around healing people for free? This deep down?

Safe to say, Rael was skeptical.

"Nothing’s ever free," Rael said plainly. "And no, I don’t need your healing."

A flicker of fear passed through the boy’s eyes the moment Rael spoke.

In the very next instant, Rael heard a distant thud from the tunnel, as if someone had dropped their metal bar to the ground.

Then he heard a scrape, meaning they had likely picked it back up.

Rael frowned and closed his eyes, focusing deeply.

And it didn’t take him long to spot several dozen distant heartbeats.

A moment later, Rael also felt their emotions.

Anger, malice, hatred.

Did I kill their fucking families? What’s up with this?

Rael turned back to the kid, flashing a warm smile.

"You know what? Get inside. I think I have a scratch on my elbow."

The boy beamed as he skipped inside the room and jumped onto the bed.

Rael didn’t follow the boy but instead gave Jane and Minos a nod.

"Watch over him. I’ll be back in a bit."

Their eyes widened, but before they could protest, Rael stepped into the tunnel and slammed the door shut behind him.

Immediately, he heard distant splashing sounds as the people approached.

Yet when they spotted Rael, puzzled expressions appeared on their faces.

"Huh? Who are you?"

"Ain’t this guy the one those brats were traveling with?"

One of the men stepped up, a glowing blue claymore resting on his shoulder.

"Oi, those runts are inside, right?" the man asked, narrowing his eyes. "You should’ve seen my surprise when I heard that Jane Venn and Minos Venn were alive. Their parents have wronged us, you know?"

"Their parents are dead," Rael said flatly. "So whatever grudge you’re trying to settle here seems a bit unreasonable, don’t you think?"

The man let out a chuckle.

"I’m a firm believer in sins being passed down from generation to generation. If their parents are dead..." he trailed off, taking another step closer to Rael as his smirk widened.

"That just means they have to pay in their stead."

Rael sighed.

"Day 7 of trying not to find a shit person... failed yet again," he muttered, puzzling the man.

But before anyone could process what happened, Rael thrust his sword into the nearby wall, destroying the source of light and casting darkness in the entire area.

The men surrounding Rael suddenly flinched as they raised their swords and began swinging.

"This fucking bastard! Rowen! Kill him already!"

The man in front of Rael suddenly drew his claymore and swung it at him.

However, Rael simply took a step to the side, dodging it effortlessly.

Unlike these men, who couldn’t see anything in the darkness, Rael was different.

He could hear their heartbeats, and he was able to roughly see the outlines of their figures.

With that, a faint smirk appeared on Rael’s face as he thrust his sword through the man’s neck.

He glanced at the kid who’d claimed to be a healer, and with blood dripping from his mouth, Rael spoke.

"Hey... about that healing service you mentioned earlier... is it still free?"
