Quills: the Rise of the Northern Matriarch-Chapter 63: New Northern 2
Chapter 63 - New Northern 2
"Do not capture and store images. The pronunciation is listed. If you have any problems, just ask." Nora said. She then began writing notes and placing them on common items in the household to teach them and watched her husbands start to sound out the words. After an hour and two breaks, she had covered almost every item in the house with notes. She decided then that she would bring sticky notes to this world, being unsatisfied with not being able to hang every one. She focused on her lesson and started to teach the men the basics. She hoped that they would practise every day. Korean would be their home language. Liem was especially proficient at picking up the language. She saw the same thirst that she had seen in her own reflection in his eyes that she did when she looked in the mirror every day at school. He was engrossed in learning. Cerez and Kadir were also academics and followed Liem's lead in studying.
"Such a handsome boy." Nora cooed. "Auntie loves you." She rained kisses gently on him and sniffed his little head. She noticed some sensory toys in the bag sent along with Daven and thought they looked awfully bland. What about soft fun toys? She and Ivy had stuffed bunnies that they carried around everywhere. What was cute and cuddly here? She did not see any pets other than birds on this planet. Nora took her turn engaging her sweet little nephew by shaking a toy along to the folk music that she had recorded earlier with him. It felt so awkward listening to herself. She smiled at his little face, and he gave her a big grin back.
"What did you guys play with when you were children for fun?" Nora said as she sat Daven down in a swinging seat they had finished developing.
"We learn through educational play when we are children. Infants all use toys like what you have.'' Kadir said. "I can have some toys sent here so you may look at them. We will need them in the future, anyway." He said, casting her a gentle smile. Her playing with this infant stirred something inside him. He was anxiously looking forward to the birth of their group's first children. Nora's nose wrinkled in displeasure. The toy in her hand was really not all that interesting. She bit her lip.
"I will probably end up designing some traditional 'Northern' toys for our children. I think I will end up sending a bunch to this little guy too. Something that is more lively than a dog toy." Nora said in a sing-song voice. She started crinkling a sensory toy that had a squeaker in it. When she heard the squeak and made a face that made Daven erupt in laughter for the first time. She squeaked it again and made the same face and he laughed again causing her to giggle with mirth.
"What is a 'Dog'?" Cerez asked. Nora was grateful for the notification chime that went off in her ear. Their next meal showed up from the kitchen. Cerez left and brought in the trays. The bottle of formula sent along for Daven felt hot to the touch.
"Do not just give it to him," Nora said and reached for the bottle and tested its temperature on her wrist. "The kitchen sends food too hot sometimes." Nora explained as she gave the bottle to Daven. "You must remember this. Test it on your wrist first. I will feed them myself if possible. Parental bonding was very important in my culture and I want to keep up the tradition. I will need you to defend this as it will be seen as odd," Nora said. She had been asserting this for the last month like a broken record. She would allow them to have this formula when it was not convenient to feed them personally, or if she was unable to produce it or they would not latch on it her.
Leilanna had been monitoring the feed sporadically. At this point, she looked puzzled to see Nora doing a lot of the child care. There was audio in the feed she monitored. Northerners were very strange people, but she was otherwise pleased that he was getting a lot of attention. She was grateful that Nora had accepted the apology. Her brother and the others would never forgive her. She felt an odd frustration that she missed Daven's first laugh in person. She hoped she would be pregnant again within the first three days. It was so tiresome to do this with six spouses. She was a little sore and tired from the daily intercourse while she was ovulating. She regretted the choice of committing to them all at once.
If she had taken her time to know them, would they be as intimate emotionally as the Quills? It was time to work on that regret with Janel. Leilanna's thoughts dwelled on the bond that seemed to be missing. The sexual component of their relationship was awkward without intimacy. It was tiring. She was resting in bed watching the feed, unable to pick out the symbols on everything in the house that she had labeled. Leilanna wished she had something to talk about with her spouses or an exciting activity that they could do together. All there was to eat, exercise, talk and have sex since she was forced out of business. Leilanna eyed a painting of a winter scene that Nora gifted her. She could paint like this or learned the Teere. Leilanna craved companionship. She was experiencing servitude right now.

'There is so much I clearly do not know. Why don't I know how to behave around men when my Fathers let me do anything I want without repercussions? Why did they not punish me sooner, so I did not mess things up? I would have tried harder if I could have told people why I was so frustrated.' Leilanna thought sadly.
If she could just have another chance to learn again. Educational instruction had formally ended for her. She used to find it an exclusive privilege. It felt unfair now. There had to be more to life than this. Men did not need to stop learning and expanding their minds as it would add to their credentials. She could not follow along with her spouse's conversations. All that she learned did not appeal to her or she really could not grasp as reading was difficult for her. She felt like there was something incomplete in her that the rest of her family had no problems with. When she was younger, it made her so angry at being surpassed by Liem and her brother. She saw the hesitancy in her mother's eyes when she tried to participate and lead.
Lena was only three weeks old. Her mother could and would choose not to retire until Lena came of age. Lena would be carefully groomed in the future. There was very little Leilanna could do to change her mother's mind, even if she changed her heir. She watched Nora on the feed with her son. Nora did not seem to use her power as a Matriarch either; she asked her spouses and did not 'order' them to do anything. It looked like she spent her time creating things, but they were wonderful things. She thought to herself that she would like to do that too. She enjoyed drawing and longed to design clothing for herself and her spouses. She could leave the medical businesses to her younger sister and create her own apparel business. For now, she would draw, try at home and pass on her own business to her own daughter or sons. Leilanna laid looking at the image of her sweet little son and a thought occurred to her.
'What if Daven had a cruel matriarch when he became a spouse? I would be powerless to stop them from potentially ending his young life if he displeased the wrong person. My spouses are someone's sons. Am I being fair enough? Kind of enough? Did they love me or just care for me out of duty or fear? Does Mother scare them?' Leilanna thought. Allurai was a warm woman to her immediate family. She was never violent towards her own children. But she was a powerful woman who loved her children immensely.
'What would Allurai or her fathers do or threaten them with to keep her happy?' Leilanna thought as her emotions overwhelmed her. Since she was alone, she allowed herself to weep.
