Chapter 510 - Johan’s Little Fanboy

Thick forest leaves, dense shrubs.

A young man with a monocle was moving slowly through the woods. The surrounding wild Pokémon all kept their distance — because the Pokémon accompanying him were clearly extraordinary.

This scene was displayed on a monitor inside the P2 Laboratory.

"Doesn't this guy look familiar?"

One Team Plasma grunt manning the surveillance monitors asked suddenly.

"Familiar?"

No one had time to worry about that.

The surveillance room's lead operative turned slightly toward his shoulder radio:

"Target is moving from Zone A2 toward Zone A3. You may engage."

"Understood," came the reply.

But the next second—

Everyone watching the monitors suddenly jolted in shock. One even fell from his chair.

Because on the screen...

A massive Gengar face suddenly filled the display, its eerie grin and crimson tongue giving everyone a chill.

"Ka-kaah~!"

It waved cheekily at the camera like it was saying hello.

Like watching a family-friendly drama and suddenly having Sadako crawl out of the TV.

Fzzzt—

The screen turned to static.

Sweating through his shirt, the lead grunt quickly snapped back to reality and shouted into his radio:

"Engage! Engage! The target has detected surveillance!"

"Ka-kaah~"

Gengar floated over to Johan, proudly revealing the miniature camera it had yanked out.

"...A surveillance device?" Johan looked at it with some surprise.

He had already suspected the island was privately occupied, but seeing surveillance equipment confirmed it — they'd been watched this whole time.

Johan pulled up the map on Rotom. Given their location and the previous data from Porygon-Z...

He could now confirm it.

They were in Team Plasma's P2 Laboratory.

And the one who sent the distress signal to Porygon-Z?

Most likely: Genesect, the Prehistoric Destruction Bug Pokémon from 300 million years ago.

"Tch."

Johan clicked his tongue.

Genesect and Mewtwo...

What a cursed pairing.

In the movie Genesect and the Legend Awakened, Mewtwo tried to help Genesect and got blasted with high-tech lasers for its trouble.

Genesect, a Pokémon from the same era as Kabutops and Omastar, had undergone extensive modification by Colress. Now it was a hybrid of ancient life and modern tech.

Johan considered his next move.

This place was an important Team Plasma base. Charging in alone was reckless — especially with no confirmation of whether Colress himself was inside.

Truthfully, Johan feared Colress more than Ghetsis.

There were two eras of Team Plasma: one where Ghetsis propped up N as a puppet leader, and another where Colress took full control.

And Colress... was a true menace.

His invention, the "Colress Machine," could control even legendary Pokémon — comparable to Cyrus's Red Chain.

Without the DNA Splicers, it wasn't complete. But even as-is, it could control Kyurem.

If Colress had Kyurem...

The forest rustled.

Leaves trembled, then the ground itself began to shake.

"Ka-kaah?"

Gengar slipped into the shadows and returned moments later with news:

"Ka-kaah!"

Bugs. Centipedes. Big tire-shaped centipedes!

"They don't want us leaving now..." Johan's expression turned serious.

From all directions, massive rolling Pokémon appeared — red-armored, glaring, bloodshot.

"Scolipede, Roto!"

Rotom-Dex hid behind Johan. "Megapede Pokémon, Bug and Poison-type. Its venom can kill prey in one blow. Very dangerous, Roto!"

They weren't normal Scolipede.

"These are Colress-enhanced and controlled Pokémon, aren't they?" Johan said grimly.

Colress's research aimed to draw out a Pokémon's power to the absolute limit — even at the cost of its life.

That's why the League labeled him a dangerous scientist.

But some saw him as more pure than evil — just dangerously obsessed.

And this horde? Likely victims of Colress's power-amplifying experiments.

Extremely dangerous.

Without hesitation, Johan threw two Poké Balls.

Dragonite and Ceruledge emerged, faces serious.

Whssshh

Snow began to fall.

Ninetales stepped forward, tails fanned wide.

The northern wind howled.

"Quick finish!" Johan ordered.

This was enemy territory — who knew how many more threats were nearby.

The Scolipede rushed forward, eyes rabid, jaws gnashing.

KRAH!!

The largest Scolipede, a leader-type one-third larger than normal, leapt forward.

BAM!

It slammed straight into a prismatic forcefield — a barrier that came from nowhere.

That was the signal.

"Draaa!!"

Dragonite beat its wings, intensifying the snowstorm.

"Ninetales, Blizzard!"

"Rotom, Fridge Mode — Blizzard!"

Blizzard + Blizzard + Hurricane =

A terrifying ice storm engulfed the area.

Scolipede saw only white — their world washed out to monochrome.

And within the wind...

A flicker of ghostly blue flame.

One down.

Ceruledge, cloaked in shadows and storm, flickered through the battlefield like an assassin — every sword slash dropping another Scolipede.

The storm softened them. Ceruledge finished them.

But the Scolipede charged on, unfazed by fear.

Problem was, they couldn't see anything.

Their attacks flailed into nothing — or were stopped by barriers.

Despite Colress's enhancements, these Scolipede were outclassed.

Gengar didn't even need to move. It just stood near Johan, watching.

Crack-crack...

Finally, the first Scolipede froze solid — encased in glimmering ice.

That was the signal.

Time to go.

"Go!"

Johan leapt onto Dragonite's back. The others returned to their balls.

They flew.

"Draaa—!"

Dragonite roared as it soared, escaping before any reinforcements could track them.

Back on the ground—

"L-Lord Colress, the target... fled,"

a nervous Plasma grunt reported from the now-snow-covered forest.

They had deployed Pokémon immediately — only to be steamrolled.

The once lush forest was now frozen tundra.

If someone said Johan was a Four Heavenly Kings-level Trainer, no one would question it.

Colress, however, remained calm. He stood before a frozen Scolipede, curious.

Touching the ice —

"Such strong cold..."

Even among Ice-types he'd studied, this was a new level.

If this could be enhanced further...

Could it freeze an entire city?

That wasn't ordinary power — that was legendary.

Colress's interest in Johan — and his Ice-type Pokémon — deepened.

"Who was that man?" he asked.

"It was... Professor Johan," the lead grunt replied cautiously.

"Professor Johan?" Colress's eyes sparkled.

The grunt began to explain, but Colress cut him off.

"I know who he is."

He began pacing — visibly excited.

The P2 grunts had never seen Colress like this.

Was Colress... a Johan fanboy?

...Pretty much, yeah.

Colress wasn't content with studying average Pokémon anymore. He wanted to explore legendary Pokémon — and no one met more legendaries than Johan.

If Johan helped, Colress's research could leap forward.

Especially in one area: Mega Evolution.

Colress's whole research thesis was about maximizing Pokémon power.

What did that better than Mega Evolution?

But Mega Evolution required stones, Trainer bonds, and compatibility...

What if all Pokémon could Mega Evolve?

"Power of the heart..." Colress murmured.

The one thing he couldn't replicate.

But Johan was known as the "Bond Master."

If he could study Johan...

"Lord Colress, are you... Johan's fan?" one grunt asked.

"Fan," Colress confirmed.

Grunts: "..."

"He's a high-ranking International Police officer, possibly future Elite Four in Hoenn or Sinnoh..."

"Why not Unova?" Colress asked flatly.

"Huh?"

"If he has that power..." Colress pointed to the frozen Scolipede. "Why not make him Unova's Champion?"

Grunts: "..."

They had no reply.

Their scientist-in-chief had gone full stan.

"Find someone who can contact him," Colress ordered cheerfully.

"Uh... y-yes, sir!"

"By the way." Colress remembered something.

"Didn't Rood mention a powerful unknown Ice-type Pokémon? Said if we helped, he could get me the DNA Splicers?"

"Yes! Lord Rood said capturing that Pokémon could help obtain the Splicers."

"Agree to it."

"Yes, sir!"

Finally — something good for Team Plasma.

On a distant shore, Johan stood by the water, face pale, phone in hand.

"This is Johan, Inspector."

"Inspector Johan, this is the liaison."

He calmly reported the secret island, the illegal activity, and the encounter.

The operator immediately understood the seriousness and said they'd escalate at once.

The International Police had long suspected Team Plasma but lacked evidence.

Now they had enough to move.

"If this checks out, we can officially list Team Plasma as a criminal organization."

Viridian City, Kanto — Rocket HQ.

Inside a sealed tank, beneath a dark visor...

A red glow flickered.

It saw the future.

Johan would need its help.
