699: New Tricks Getting Old

The enormous ball of fire was visible from kilometers away, its shine brightening the day for just the few moments that it remained before dispersing and leaving only ruin and destruction behind.

“Magnificent!

That Xaltar youngster is really something, isn’t he?” Irlanx Xacobus didn’t think that the restless had it in him to create such an act of fiery demolition before, truly this invasion was a great opportunity for his people to grow.

As of now however, the golden skeleton floated amidst blue flames that while seemingly identical to those conjured up by Xaltar, were many times from dreadful, in fact, he doubted that there was anything that he knew that would not be reduced to kindling for them to devour.

Alistel grumbled at his words, visibly displeased.

“How long do you intend to blabber on at me?

You’re doing nothing but buy time and float around” she said, her blade pointed up at the shrugging skeleton, whose facial expression would probably be humorous if he could have any. freewebnøvel.coɱ

“No need to be mad, I am merely showing off one of my generals- These fellows are something like my children, so you know… You’ll have to take the role as their mother-” he narrowly dodged a slash of flames that went and absolutely ruined a hill in the far distance.

“My bad, my bad…”

“Enough”

“I shall get serious when you do as well- Come on, Alistel, use the first step of your soul sword!

I am not like you, I can’t just speak a word aloud and act all cool as I power up, I just have powers and I have to strain them like muscles to go about using them, what am I supposed to say?

‘I’m not holding back anymore’?

‘I’ll show you the full extent of my power’?

That would be so ridiculous!

No, it’s up to you to take things to the next level…”

The imposing woman sighed in exasperation, if he wasn’t strong enough to warrant her presence, she definitely wouldn’t have bothered with him at all, the exhaustion that she had felt when facing him the first time was all coming back, Irlanx was definitely more interested in her as a woman that as a warrior, and it showed.

“You are a freaking lunatic, shall I remind you that you are a skeleton?”

“Is that you perhaps implying something about my capabilities as a man?

I can assure you that I have the tools to-”

“Burn” shutting off another monologue before it could get any further, Alistel activated her weapon’s first step, the entire blade becoming engulfed in soul flames, and suddenly, all of the fire around already raging seemed to grow more erratic, the closest forest that had been far enough to be left untouched by their confrontation suddenly caught fire.

“Burn?

Wasn’t it combust before?”

‘Hold on… The ability she was showing with her basic blade used to be the ability given by her first step, wasn’t it?

And this first step now… That’s what used to be her second step!’

“I suppose you could say that I got a little bit better since the last time we fought, the previous abilities of my soul weapon needed to be readjusted to properly fit around”

“I see… Well then… I guess I should start to pull out my new tricks as well” the dark flies began moving, the swarm acting like a single organism covered the sky above, blocking out the light from the sun, flapping their wings with increased velocity as they seemed to vibrate in place, shaking off golden dust that had seemingly been stuck on their black bodily hair.

Meanwhile, a great mass of golden chains tangled itself up behind Xacobus, twisting together until it formed a sort of statue, the likes one might expect to find to be worshipped as a false idol in some sort of underground temple, a half-fly, half-woman sculpture of magnificent gold with a hundred wings and thousand arms.

The statue had no lower-half and was instead anchored to the ground with chains, its limbs rising up all at once as a stream of flies that had been hidden underground still flew into its mouth and disappeared without a trace.

Before anything else could happen, Alistel had already leapt up to the floating king, her blade swung right at him, mere proximity was causing his ample robe to burn up despite having been woven from most exquisite materials, namely his own bone marrow.

Bit of gold flew out from the clothing as it burnt up, still, he held no fear for the powerful flames and manifested the handle of a greatsword, directing flies to condense themselves and turn into its blades as he struck back against the flaming sword, managing to block it.

In the air, he held the advantage as he could float, still, he was losing out in terms of raw power, be it sheer brawn or that of the sword itself, his blade that could cut through anything was being broken down little by little as it struggled against soul fire.

He disengaged and floated to the side, Alistel just flinging herself right back at him in mid-air, one wouldn’t be faulted for thinking that she could just fly around like Irlanx could, but there was no mistaking the fact that her movements could be nearly as refined as his as she was merely using brute force force to move around.

Manifesting chains in an attempt to weaken the oncoming strike before using the fly-sword to block it, the golden statue finally stirred and turned its head- Its empty and soulless eyes right at the living, opening the mouth wide open, contorting it into a most wicked grin before firing a blast of black pulsating with dark red.

The flies it had eaten had been ground into some sort of pure energy version of themselves and being used as fuel as the sculpture repeatedly launched these blasts, forcing Alistel to dodge as there was no telling if these things could be blocked or not.

Wherever they landed, they would just cleanly carved through the ground and disappear into the distance without losing strength, transforming all of the destroyed earth into flies that immediately flew toward the living, only to be reduced to nothing without even entering into contact with the blue blaze.

Still, even as she dodged the projectiles, Alistel did not relent in her attempts to cut down Xacobus, and neither did he stay idle as the statue did its thing, actively trying to overwhelm her through a combination of both of his innate abilities.

Chains of gold equipped with sharp points were launched forward, flies would emerge from unexpected spots, trying to force their way toward the living by packing themselves together, just in the hope that a single one of them could land upon her skin and provoke a chain reaction.

At one point, the skeleton pulled on a small golden chain that extended upward above the ceiling of black flies up above, revealing a massive block of gold, its entire weight pulling it toward the ground.

Alistel didn’t seem impressed and merely landed upon the ground, after evading another blast from the statue and merely pointed were sword up at the block, stabbing through it as it came crashing down and injecting flames within, causing it to exploded into a torrent of dust that was also quickly burnt to nothingness.

Revealing that the flies up above no longer blocked the light of the sun, and had instead all concealed into a singular, massive fly with most threatening appendages that definitely belonged to a praying mantis.

The beast flew down only to be instantly split in half and mostly burned, but whatever parts weren’t instantly consumed instead broke apart into every singular fly used to make them up.

“I wish I could just sigh, all my cool moves look like party tricks right now”

“Then perhaps you should just give up?”

“Give up on love?

Don’t make me laugh- We’ll just have to do this like the good old days”

Alistel clicked her tongue but formed a smile nonetheless.

“Good, I was getting tired of chasing you around”
