Path to Becoming the Greatest Space Mercenary-Chapter 43 - Disturbance in the Prazan System
Chapter 43: Chapter 43 Disturbance in the Prazan System
Avery watched as the space around him began to distort.
The hyperdrive was forming an energy shell around the Dauntless that would allow it to move into hyperspace.
Once it had finally fished, the ship's surroundings completely changed in a manner vastly different to going to light speed.
Looking outside of the view screen, Avery saw that all around them was what looked like a flowing stream of mostly blue and black, with the occasional bits of other flashing colors.
"Looks like we've successfully entered the hyper lane." Kasandra said, reading out the information on the console while Avery looked at their surroundings in wonder.
He hardly even heard what she said and gave no response. He was taken in by the beautiful sight before him.
However, staring at it for too long started to give him a headache, and eventually he was forced to look away.
"Ah, looks like you're not lucky, same as me." Kasandra said, also making sure not to keep her eyes of the outside for too long as well.
When Avery asked her to elaborate, she told him that around eighty percent of people would end up experiencing some discomfort if they looked at hyperspace for too long. And while some species were more or less prone to this problem, you would find certain members that it effected more heavily or those that had no problems at all.
"My brother is one of those that can stare at it for hours without a problem. Some scientists have apparently tried to figure out why diffident individuals have varying reactions, but as far as I know, nothing concrete had been discovered."
Avery felt a bit jealous to hear that there were some people out there that could watch the mesmerizing sight of hyperspace without issue. While he needed to look away after just a couple minutes.

Still, this was only a minor inconvenience. Whenever he wanted, he could catch a quick glimpse of the strange space outside.
At certain points the structure of the hyperspace lane would contract or expand. This was due to the celestial bodies nearby that occupied regular space. While hyperspace was a sort of separate dimension where it was possible to travel great distances in only a short amount of time, it could be influenced by large masses like planets and stars.
"Looks like we just barely fit through this part. I can see why this hyper lane is almost never used." Kasandra commented.
As hyperspace seemed to get smaller, the edges of the dauntless grew precariously close to it.
Right now, they were passing through a system that had six stars in it. This constricted the hyper lane and made it traversable by only small classification ships. If anything larger tried to pass through, they would found themselves shunted back out into normal space.
"I suppose this is anther reason that they wanted to send a mercenary." Avery said, a look of realization on his face.
Naturally there were other ways to the Prazan System from the Yuson System, but they would require a more roundabout path and take much longer.
Thanks to the current situation in Avery's home system, the Alliance police were hardly in the position to be sending one of their vessels off on a several days long journey to check on a monitoring station in an area of space that was practically devoid of civilization or value.
"We're about to exit hyperspace. Be ready for anything. The repair crew that got sent out probably got destroyed or captured. There's no telling what me might find when we arrive."
Kasandra nodded and the relaxed demeanor she had displayed until now was replaced by a focused veteran mercenary of many battles. She may have been leaving the piloting and operation of the Dauntless' main weapons to Avery, but she would do everything she could to support him.
The moment they reentered normal space; it became apparent that something disastrous had indeed occurred here.
"That's definitely the monitoring station. And I'd be willing to bet that the maintenance ship is part of the wreckage." Avery said, a grim look on his face.
Not too far from where they dropped out of hyperspace was a conspicuous field of drifting metal and plastic debris.
This system was devoid of almost anything other than clouds of dust left behind by the planets that had once been here before the system's star went supernova. Therefore, any bits of obviously manufactured material floating around most likely belonged to the one piece of technology that had been there.
"Some of the plating seems to have scorch marks on it. Probably from lasers or some other type of energy weapon." Kasandra said, telling Avery what the sensor readings had picked up.
While she was analyzing what information pertaining to the wreckage, Avery had his eyes out for whatever had caused it.
The likeliest possibility was that space pirates that had escaped the recent raid were hiding out here, but it felt too eerily quiet for Avery's liking.
"Now this is odd. Doesn't seem like any generators, batteries, or other electrical system exploded or were heavily damaged, but they're all devoid of power."
Both Avery and Kasandra found this to be truly strange. The level of damage to the station and the ship that had come to check on it when it stopped transmitting were completely torn apart. Normally this would only happen if they were consumed by a large explosion. Typically, when the main generator was hit and became unstable.
"Whoever did this was certainly meticulous. It looks like they bored into the hull with something and ripped the station and vessel apart." Avery said, having magnified the view screen and was intently examining the damage.
For a few moments, Kasandra shared Avery's baffled look, before an old memory of something she had heard about from another mercenary found its way to the forefront of her mind.
Immediately, her eyes went wide, and she started to tremble.
"Avery, we need to get out of here right now! Set a course back for Yuson II! We have to inform the Alliance Police what is going on here before it's too late!"
