Chapter 1792: Hurt later

Meanwhile...

BANG!

Everyone in Zoren’s truck ducked as the first round of fire hit the side of their vehicle.

Hugo looked back, spotting a few vehicles in the distance. He clenched his teeth.

"Damn," he hissed, looking at the people in the front. His eyes immediately landed on Zoren and Atlas. Gulping, he exhaled. "Lower your head, and Mark, cover for me."

"Hugo—"

Hugo reached out to Atlas’s shoulder, moving his face closer. "I’ll follow!" he yelled in Atlas’s ear, squeezing his first brother’s shoulder before pulling back. He nodded at Atlas, patted his back, and shot Mark a look.

Mark was already climbing onto the back while Angel did his best to keep the truck’s speed steady. Despite Angel’s efforts, the road was rocky. Thanks to Mark’s experience, he managed to reach the back.

"Hold here, sir," Mark instructed, keeping Zoren and Atlas in the corner while he stood in the middle with Hugo. When he faced Hugo, they exchanged nods.

As they made their way to the back, another round of fire hit the rear headlights.

Without fear, Hugo turned to the cars on the left and right, signaling them with a finger. After their company honked in response, Hugo stood at the back of the truck, making himself a target.

The enemies opened fire, but with the combination of the rocky road and their speed, they kept missing him.

"Shoot the damn bastard!" someone from the truck following Zoren’s team shouted. "He’s not even moving!" freēwēbnovel.com

"Shoot him! Keep shooting!"

Yet, they kept missing. The man who had complained previously hissed and finally stood up from his seat.

"Let me fucking do it—"

PHEW!

Before the man could finish, a hole suddenly appeared between his brows. His body went limp and fell off their fast-moving vehicle. Everyone paused, watching their comrade fall, only to be run over by the truck behind them.

"Fuck!" they yelled, opening fire even more.

Zoren’s team—three trucks driving ahead—returned fire, taking down as many enemies as they could. But, like the others, they kept missing as well.

Meanwhile, Hugo looked up while Mark covered him, firing at the truck following them.

"I’ll follow you!" Hugo shouted, glancing back at his brother and brother-in-law. "Angel, keep driving!"

Angel, whose rearview mirror was already broken, nodded. Hugo didn’t see that, but the determination in his eyes shone brightly. Mark, on the other hand, seamlessly knelt near Hugo, his rifle pointed at the enemies.

Hugo refocused his attention on the truck behind them, trusting Mark to cover for him as he gazed up. Since they were taking the woods, there were countless trees and branches. Hugo pulled out a pistol, strapping it to a makeshift strap, and looked ahead.

In the next breath, he tossed the pistol tied with the strap. The pistol ended up wrapped around the branch. It quickly tugged on his hand, and Hugo gripped it before jumping off the truck.

"Hu—" Atlas paused, and Zoren’s mouth slightly parted, watching Hugo dangle as the pistol wrapped around a branch.

Hugo swung, his shoulder stretching uncomfortably, but that didn’t stop him. He raised his foot, preventing himself from hitting the tree. He bounced off once, taking advantage of the momentum, and hopped off again, rifle ready.

BANG BANG!

As the vehicle following theirs reached where he swung, Hugo didn’t hesitate to jump on it. He barely held onto the truck’s rim, his feet on its side. His other hand quickly pulled the trigger, firing at the men inside.

As Hugo fought his way into the vehicle, the front trucks watched as the truck behind them tilted from left to right.

Atlas: "..."

Zoren: "..."

Mark: "..."

The three of them, who had witnessed Hugo suddenly acting like Tarzan and forcing his way into the vehicle, had only one thought in mind.

Zoren and Atlas, without looking at each other, asked at the same time: "Do you know he can do that?"

As soon as the same question left their mouths, they looked at each other in slight surprise. Mark, however, kept his eyes on the vehicle. He raised his hand, signaling the men driving from the left and right to deal with the other enemies.

When his eyes returned to the vehicle behind them, his brows furrowed. ’That’s Hugo Bennet for you.’

Hugo Bennet wouldn’t make it to the top of the enemy’s list just by chance. After all, that man was surely an animal—just as Mark had heard.

’And to think he’s even injured...’ Mark kept his mouth pressed into a thin line, watching the vehicle regain control and finally move into a straight line. ’...I wonder how he is when he’s not injured.’

Hugo and Mark had sparred some time ago, and Angel had fought him as well. However, the match was called a draw. But tonight, it was clear Hugo had been going easy on them. It wasn’t that Mark and Angel couldn’t do that, but Hugo was just honed differently.

Once Mark was sure it was safe, he turned to face his bosses and yelled, "Angel, don’t slow down! Hugo already took control of the vehicle behind us. Keep moving!"

Angel, now behind the wheel, nodded. "I’m not planning to anyway."

After all, Hugo was with them. He had already said it: he would make sure Zoren and Atlas reached their destination alive. They all knew Hugo would make that happen.

Right now, the Hugo with them wasn’t just Atlas’s or Penny’s second brother. The man with them was an experienced soldier who had set foot on the most dangerous battlefields and still come back alive and in one piece.

This was war.

A battlefield where any of them could lose their life. But with Hugo on their back, their chances of survival had increased.

War and battlefields, after all, were his playground.

Hugo pushed the driver’s body off the truck, taking the wheel. The vehicle wiggled violently as the steering wheel felt hard to stir. Using just his brute force, he regained control of it and tried to flash the car ahead some lights.

The headlights were already shattered, shot previously by Mark. Even so, Hugo knew Mark would know that Hugo had already regained control over the vehicle just out of pure instinct.

"Damn..." Hugo panted, breaking out in cold sweats as he reached for his leg. The pain was starting to crawl back from his previous injury. He squeezed his leg, and blood quickly soaked his palm.

He shook his head, forcing himself to focus and endure the growing pain in his leg.

"Hurt later," he whispered to himself. "But not right now."

There were still many things to do. Not just to make sure to drop off Atlas and Zoren at their destination, but also to find out if his sister was alive or dead.
