PAMPERED BY MY THREE BROTHERS: THE RETURN OF THE NEGLECTED HEIRESS-Chapter 1786: Penny’s plan
Chapter 1786: Penny’s plan
Shawn had expected Hugo to reach them first. After all, among the Bennet brothers, Hugo was more experienced in combat and more familiar with the battlefield. That’s why the plan to escape had included Hugo Bennet intervening in the chase.
And, as expected, Hugo came after them and almost foiled their plan. "Fortunately," Jonathan had foreseen this and prepared a plan to throw off Hugo. They succeeded in stopping Hugo, but not in ending him.
In other words, Hugo was truly someone everyone was prepared to stop at all costs.
Who would have thought there was another Bennet just as capable as Hugo when it came to these things?
Once Penny calmed Slater down, she yelled at Shawn to drag their hostage out. So, Shawn carried Brad and the two pilots to the shore. After that, the three of them just idled by the shore.
The island they landed on was small, quite a bit away from their original destination. Well, Penny and Shawn had already seen the hill they were planning to land on, but they turned back since they had arrived earlier than everyone else. Besides, it was also safer to stay around the island they planned to go to, but far enough to avoid attention.
"So, that’s what happened, huh?" Slater rocked his head. "You should warn Mint, if that’s what you think."
"Already did!" Penny raised her brows. "The phone’s dead, though. But I told her to inform the others about it, so they don’t get too worried."
Slater deadpanned as he lifted his eyes to think about it. "Penny, your faith in Mint is surprising. Do you really think she’d let everyone else know that you’ve contacted her?"
"Well, I hope she would. Otherwise, First Brother will get angry."
"You..." Slater shook his head. "Never mind."
He paused and shot Penny a look. "So, what’s the plan?"
"I’m still thinking about that," she hummed, looking back at him. "By the way, how did you get to us before everyone else?"
"Maybe because I went after you before anyone else?" Slater shrugged, arching a brow at her. When he glanced at Shawn and then back at Penny, he clicked his tongue. "I took a shortcut."
"Oh..." Penny’s mouth formed an "o" shape, nodding in understanding. "So, that’s why."
She grinned. "Well, isn’t that nice?" novelbuddy-cσ๓
"Focus, Penny." He peeled his eyes away from her. "It’s still a few minutes before we reach the meeting place. You told Mint to land on the other island and even wanted her to leak the information. What’s next?"
"Also, what if they get ambushed?" he added. "Everyone’s just going to be in trouble."
"True, but Shawn said it’s better that way."
"And you believe him?"
"Of course!" Penny smirked. "If not for him, this would’ve been a different situation. Besides, even if he is Jonathan’s soldier, his change of heart saved all of us from more trouble."
Slater frowned and shifted his eyes to Shawn. The latter lowered his head and didn’t meet his gaze.
"What are you going to do if he has another change of heart then?" Slater finally asked, locking eyes with Penny again. "He betrayed the guy he’d been following his entire life. What makes you think he won’t betray someone he’s barely known?"
Shawn gulped and glanced at Penny, his mouth drawn into a thin line. He couldn’t blame Slater for asking such a critical question, because it was surprisingly sharp. And Shawn couldn’t just ask Slater to believe or trust him.
Penny rubbed her chin and hummed. "Well..." she flashed Slater a smile. "If that happens, you’re here. You’ll protect me from him, right?"
"..." Her answer made Slater’s brows rise in surprise.
Penny rarely depended on him, and she never asked for his help. Even when she did, it was usually nonsense.
"Penny..." he called, then suddenly, his eyes molded into a round, wiggly shape. "I didn’t think you thought I was reliable, but of course! If he suddenly changed his mind, I’ll even snap his neck for you!"
"Hehe." Penny chuckled, patting Slater’s head, and the latter teared up with just that.
As Slater wiped his eyes with his arm, Shawn darted his eyes between the two siblings. It didn’t even seem like Slater was just being a bit overdramatic. If anything, Slater seemed to take his sister’s reliance seriously and gratefully.
"Anyway, I still have no idea what we should do," Penny said, slowly withdrawing her hand from Slater. "Should we confront the moles if there are any?"
"Confronting them shouldn’t be a problem, considering our number." Slater nodded, counting with his fingers as he listed the group that had joined this operation. "There’s Interpol, Homeland Security, a little bit from everywhere. Then, the Prime Group, Zoren’s, Second Brother called for assistance from his friends in the military, and then Dad."
"Dad?" Penny blinked. "Dad’s here?"
"Do you really think he wouldn’t come when he heard his daughter was abducted?"
"I’m dead." Penny smacked her lips and thought about it for a second. "Well, I guess confronting them is inevitable and probably the easiest way."
"I—" Shawn stopped when the duo turned to him.
"It’s alright. Speak," Penny encouraged. "My brother won’t bite you."
"For now," Slater added. "But pull another trick like that again, and I’ll send you to hell where you belong."
Shawn gulped, clearing his throat as he mustered the courage to speak his mind. "I... I don’t think that’s possible."
"What’s not possible?" Slater and Penny returned in unison.
"With all the numbers in the group, I doubt they would want a confrontation since the moles in the groups were outnumbered for sure," Shawn explained. "Besides, even with that, I don’t think they’d prioritize a confrontation right now. If anything..."
He paused as he thought about it. "Knowing Jonathan, what he would avoid is Miss Penny handing over the code."
"Assuming that someone in the operation leaked that Miss Penny was alright, it’s the handover they’d prevent," he continued quietly, watching Penny’s and Slater’s brows knit. "So, I’m sure they’d shoot you down once you were spotted."
"Why are you just saying this now?" Slater frowned. "If you hadn’t met me in the air, you would’ve landed on the hill."
"We’re not planning to land," Penny chimed in. "We’re just checking, but we plan to land on this very island. After all, Shawn said, the people on this island are very few, and unlike the other island, they treat this one as a neutral zone. Or more like a safe zone."
"If they would prevent the handover, then..." She clapped her hands as she thought of an idea, the corners of her mouth stretching from ear to ear. "I just had a plan!"
This time, Shawn and Slater raised their brows at her. But seeing the smile on her face, whatever was running through her mind, they didn’t want to know.
