Chapter 538: Chapter 538: Scam?

An Yin’s eyes froze for a moment, but she quickly responded, "Thank you for your trouble."

"No need to be polite." Shi Qing watched as An Yin stood at the end of the line, whispered, "Are you planning to take full responsibility?" Earlier, An Yin had explained the whole situation over the phone, and Shi Qing felt that this incident shouldn’t be entirely An Yin’s fault.

An Yin looked timid and weak, maybe that’s why people decided to pin it on her.

"This matter was originally my fault." An Yin lowered her head.

"Have you checked the surveillance footage from when it happened?" Shi Qing frowned, hitting the nail on the head.

"No." An Yin shook her head in confusion.

"I think you should first check the surveillance footage, because if you pay upfront now, you might not get the money back later."

Shi Qing had grown up in a harsh environment, and when her mother was short of money, she had engaged in scams like this. Although eventually, Shi’s mother was exposed by the public, she learned a lesson and never dared to make money through dubious means again.

An Yin’s eyes flickered slightly; the things Shi Qing mentioned had never occurred to her. When she saw someone injured, her first reaction was to assume she had knocked them over.

"But now they’re lying in the hospital, and the nurse is urging me to make a payment. I really don’t know what to do." An Yin watched as her turn in the payment line approached, feeling extremely anxious.

"Give me the exact location and name of the store; I will go there and check the surveillance footage for you." Shi Qing’s face was calm and composed.

Upon hearing the suggestion, An Yin felt a sheen of embarrassment on her face, "Shi Qing, you’re amazing!" An Yin genuinely admired Shi Qing; a woman with such a clear mind made An Yin feel ashamed of herself.

Hearing An Yin’s sincere compliment, a faint blush appeared on Shi Qing’s face, "Address."

An Yin was startled at first but then quickly provided the detailed address and the name of the store.

After discussing, the two agreed to cover some of the fees first. After the payment, they parted ways, and An Yin headed to the emergency room, only to find the door already open. A nurse told her the woman had been moved to a VIP ward.

An Yin hurried to the ward, and upon knocking and entering, she heard the woman talking loudly on the phone.

"Don’t come over; I’m being taken care of here."

"Don’t worry, I’m fine."

"I know, you all just stay at home and don’t worry about me."

"..."

As the woman chatted enthusiastically, she noticed the young girl standing at the entrance, her clear eyes innocently blinking at her, looking as innocent as could be!

The woman momentarily forgot she was on the phone, until her daughter’s urgent voice came through, prompting her to hurriedly say, "My back is starting to hurt again, can’t talk, need to lie down."

She quickly hung up the phone, and glanced somewhat uneasily at the young girl.

"Didn’t you know to knock when coming in? It’s so rude to eavesdrop on someone else’s call." The woman quipped sarcastically.

An Yin felt very conflicted; from the woman’s reaction, it seemed she had refused her family’s visit.

"I knocked." An Yin explained.

As if not hearing An Yin’s words, the woman ordered, "I’m thirsty and want some water."

"Okay."

"I feel like eating some fruit."

"I’ll go buy it."

"I want cherries and strawberries." The woman didn’t notice the growing dismay on the young girl’s face, continuing, "By the way, get some apples too."

An Yin took a couple of steps forward and, seeing the personal medical profile of the woman on the bedside, said mildly, "Aunt Liu, I’ve just paid for your medical expenses, and there’s not much money left. Can we skip buying the fruits?"

"Little girl, I just want some fruit, why are you acting pitiful in front of me?" Mrs. Liu raised her voice, scolding the young girl standing before her.

"It’s not that, I..."

"I don’t care; I just want them. Go buy them and stop standing here getting in my way." Mrs. Liu assertively looked at the young girl, speaking with vigor.

An Yin took a deep breath, thoroughly having no way to deal with the other party.

She turned around dejectedly to leave.

"Remember to pick ones of better quality." Mrs. Liu fretted looking at the young girl’s dispirited form.

An Yin’s steps halted, thinking the woman might retract her words, only to realize she was overthinking it.

As she left the room, she happened to run into a doctor in a white coat.

The doctor saw the young girl coming out of the room and fixed his gaze on her, then spoke, "Miss An!"

An Yin looked up, confused by the address. How did the doctor seem to know her?

"Hello!" An Yin looked at him puzzled.

The doctor saw the confusion and quickly explained, "We’ve met before when you were hospitalized here, maybe you don’t remember."

"Sorry." An Yin gave a shy smile, indeed she had forgotten.

Her words did not bother the doctor; rather he asked warmly, "Who is Mrs. Liu to you?"

"I’m not familiar with her." A wry smile appeared at the corner of An Yin’s mouth.

"You just came out of her ward, right?"

"Yes." An Yin nodded, sensing the curiosity in his eyes, and told the story of how she accidentally knocked the woman over.

After listening, the doctor’s brows furrowed, "After a detailed examination, Mrs. Liu’s physical condition is perfectly normal; as for her back pain, nothing was found upon examination. However, Mrs. Liu requested hospitalization for observation, so we had to comply."

"The examination results showed no issues?" An Yin looked up, her face full of excitement, at the much taller doctor.

"Yes." The doctor confirmed.

"Then..." An Yin was about to ask if Mrs. Liu could be discharged.

Thinking about Mrs. Liu’s constant complaints of back pain, An Yin feared she might overlook some aspects of the examination.

In her dilemma, the doctor suddenly smiled, "Miss An, what do you want to say?"

"N-nothing." An Yin shook her head awkwardly.

After exchanging a few pleasantries, they went their separate ways.

An Yin went downstairs intending to buy some fruit, but after wandering around, found that the fruit near the hospital was too expensive. In all the stores she checked, it was the same. But since the woman had specified those fruits, An Yin reluctantly bought a little of each, spending over two hundred yuan.

Carrying the light shopping bag to the ward’s entrance and spotting the door ajar, she walked straight in, hearing a familiar voice from inside the ward.

Walking down the corridor, she saw Shi Qing standing by the bed, confronted with a serious expression.
