"Marcus."
A clear voice echoed from the staircase, and the next moment, a young girl in long sleeves and pants, carrying a backpack, appeared in view.
Despite the hot weather, she was drenched in sweat just from walking over. Her hair was damp, and fine beads of sweat dotted her nose and forehead, but her smile was fresh and her eyes curved in delight.
Marcus put away his phone and raised his eyelids to look at her.
As she walked over, her dark eyes quickly scanned and landed on Nora Scott, her head tilting slightly.
Marcus casually introduced, "My sister." He then pointed to her, "Paula Loughton."
The girl paused, nodded politely to Nora, and greeted, "Hello, sister."
With a slight smirk, Nora asked Marcus, "Your girlfriend?"
Marcus turned and started walking back, pausing slightly at the door, and tossed out a soft, "No."
Nora and Paula exchanged a glance.
Facing Nora’s inquisitive look, Paula remained calm and smiled, "Really not."
Nora raised an eyebrow.
Not means not, then.
*
The young girl, Paula Loughton, sat in a chair. In front of her was a small section of a cluttered desk cleared for homework.
After entering, she greeted Oliver Scott and then settled down to work on her summer assignments.
As a student soon entering ninth grade, she was preparing for entrance exams. Though not as intense as Marcus or Oliver’s studies, it was still a tough battle.
She worked diligently, keeping her head slightly bowed, her slender fingers gripping the pen. Her eyes scanned through questions swiftly, solving them on scrap paper. Occasionally, she’d pause at a tough problem, frowning, then would call out for Marcus. When free, he’d come over to help; if busy, he’d tell her to skip the tough ones for now.
Nora genuinely thought that Marcus, no matter who he was with, had a sort of "motherly" presence.
—Yet, he was clearly a cool and handsome young man.
She idly shared this observation with Pedro Langley.
[Pedro Langley]: ...Whatever you say.
[Nora Scott]: ?
[Pedro Langley]: You’re a "grandmaster" to everyone.
[Nora Scott]: Teasing me just because I’m not there to hit you?
Whether out of guilt or something else, Pedro didn’t reply anymore.
About ten minutes later, Nora’s phone buzzed—it was a call from Pedro.
Upon answering, she heard Pedro’s voice, "How about I treat you to a meal, and you skip hitting me once?"
Nora’s brow raised.
With her lips curving into a smile, knowing she needed to put Pedro in his place, Nora softly scoffed, her lips a straight line, "Not if it’s cheap."
"I can only afford hot pot," Pedro sighed lightly, "How about I add two extra pots?"
"Not easily pleased," Nora said, "Make it three."
"...Fine."
The penny-pinching Pedro seemed troubled, but considering Nora’s exceptional beauty, it was a conceivable compromise.
Nora laughed despite herself, grumbling, "You’re miserly to a fault."
...
After the call, Nora, who had been somewhat sluggish, was suddenly vibrant, her brows and lips gently curved in a smile, matching the ample sunshine outside, like the most beautiful sight of the summer.
Paula ceased writing furtively and lifted her head ever so slightly to see the stunning sister, dressed in white, her black hair over her shoulders, resembling an ink painting come to life.
She momentarily found herself entranced.
"Looks like our dinner plans are ruined."
Oliver leaned in, whispering to Marcus.
Marcus glanced quickly at Nora, then added, "And our driver too."
They shared a knowing look—surely, Pedro was back from his trip.
As expected, after exchanging a few words, Nora hung up, picked up her bag, said something to them, and left the cozy air-conditioned room decisively to face the harsh summer outside.
*
Pedro was waiting downstairs.
The afternoon sun beat down on the ground; he stood in the shadow of the building, his figure tall and upright against the backdrop of a blue sky and lush sycamore trees. The sunlight was bright and dazzling, yet he alone filled Nora’s view.
Suppressing the urge to grin, Nora walked over, scrutinizing him briefly, and noticing his attire, lightly frowned, "Why are you wearing long sleeves in the summer?"
His first words upon their reunion made Pedro pause, speechless for a moment, before chuckling in resignation, "I’m afraid a tank top and shorts aren’t worthy of you."
Nora: "..."
His slippery tongue hadn’t changed one bit.
Not following his lead, Nora’s expression shifted as she changed the topic, "Did you drive?"
"I let the driver go."
"Oh."
Nora took her car keys from her bag and handed them to Pedro, naturally implying he should drive.
Holding the cool keys, Pedro chuckled, suddenly having thought of something, "Weren’t you into fast and wild drives?"
"In Fenton City’s downtown?"
Nora cast him a surprised glance.
"..."
That really wouldn’t work here. 𝐟𝚛𝕖𝚎𝕨𝗲𝐛𝚗𝐨𝐯𝐞𝕝.𝐜𝗼𝗺
Nora’s car was parked downstairs, but after baking in the sun, it was too warm inside. She refrained from getting in for a while, letting Pedro run the air conditioning to cool it down, while she stayed in the first-floor corridor, messaging Henry Chapman and Marcus.
The messages were simple directives to have Oliver bring a dinner portion for Henry. And as for Henry, she merely informed him she’d be out and Marcus would bring dinner over.
Both were rather indifferent to her presence; they all agreed.
"Nora."
As Nora was about to leave upon receiving responses, she heard someone call her name.
She paused, looked back, and saw Luna Durant under an umbrella, appearing a few years younger while in her school uniform, and seemed quite surprised, her brow furrowed tightly, directing a confrontational glare at Nora.
Having not seen Luna for some time, Nora immediately recalled Luna’s public declaration to Pedro on a previous New Year’s Eve. Slightly taken aback, she instinctively thought to have Pedro handle her, but as she turned, she saw Pedro, who was coming to meet her, quickly retreat back into the car.
There wasn’t even a hint of intention to help her.
Nora: ???
What was up with her overbearing boyfriend? Had he taken some cowardly concoction?
