The black car had someone sitting in the driver’s seat, with the air conditioning on, but the window was open. An elbow lazily rested on the window ledge, holding a cigarette with the occasional ash falling.
The driver glimpsed the approaching figure through the glass and immediately extinguished the cigarette, simultaneously rolling down all the windows.
"Have you been waiting long?"
Nora Scott asked casually as she opened the car door and sat in the passenger seat.
"Not too long."
Having waited for a while without speaking, Humphrey Jennings’ voice was slightly hoarse and deep.
Nora Scott glanced at the numerous cigarette butts in the ashtray and silently looked at him. A moment of silence enveloped the car before Humphrey Jennings cleared his throat lightly and began driving towards Virtue Retreat.
As the smoke dispersed and the windows closed, the temperature inside the car gradually dropped, making it a bit more comfortable.
"What’s the result?" Humphrey Jennings asked.
Nora Scott played with her phone, and upon hearing Humphrey Jennings’ question, she pondered for a moment before responding, "The Lanel gang has been completely dismantled. I’ve asked them to pay attention to Angela Jennings’ matter, and they will conduct special investigations into it. But due to the time that has passed and the number of people involved, it’s difficult to find leads. My friends will inform me immediately if there’s any progress. All we can do now is wait."
Humphrey Jennings had heard about the Lanel gang’s complete dismantling earlier that morning, but he hadn’t sought out Nora Scott. It wasn’t until the afternoon when Nora Scott told him to meet her at school in the evening for something important that he came here.
Nora Scott has always been someone who keeps her word.
When she promised results, she delivered.
And the truth he wanted to investigate, Nora Scott would do her best to assist. —— Nora Scott never fails those who are good to her.
Throughout the journey, Nora Scott calmly introduced Humphrey Jennings to the specifics of the situation.
Having previously been attending a parents’ meeting with teachers and parents, walking around the vibrant and youthful campus, engaged in matters so far removed from her current life, Nora Scott felt a vague sense of surrealism, something quite unreal. It wasn’t until she recounted a third of the story that she managed to dispel the dissonance in her heart.
It took the two of them nearly an hour to discuss just this one matter, and they were soon arriving at Virtue Retreat.
After listening, Humphrey Jennings held a cigarette between his fingers, suppressing the urge to smoke, and said, "The source of CR2 is pretty much cut off, but about half a month ago, a large batch was shipped out from Lanel to several cities, including Fenton City."
"Is that so?"
Nora Scott raised an eyebrow.
She had only been focused on the situation in Lanel and hadn’t been looking into these matters. But upon reflection, it was indeed normal for CR2, having been studied for years, to spread to several cities.
In this respect, Humphrey Jennings, who had kept a constant watch on CR2 with his numerous covert operatives, was more in the know.
"The little girl that Benjamin Durant is associated with is cooperating with the police to investigate the CR2 matter," Humphrey Jennings spoke with a steady tone, "She survived two assassination attempts, the first completely unscathed, and the second with minor injuries. She should be discharged in a few days."
Nora Scott was slightly startled, "Rosie Sullivan?"
"Yes."
Humphrey Jennings nodded slightly.
Rosie Sullivan and Biel Hall... As someone who only occasionally reviewed documents and attended meetings, Nora Scott wasn’t aware of the specific tasks they were handling.
But given the nature of Biel Hall’s assignments, upon reflection, there seemed to be nothing unusual about it.
—— When it comes to major matters involving intelligence, especially those needed by the nation, they always find a way to get involved.
"I’ll ask around."
Nora Scott squinted slightly, unlocked her phone, and called Rosie Sullivan.
...
Fenton No. 3 Middle School.
Unlike the First Affiliated High School, there was no parents’ meeting today, and the school would have to make up a week’s worth of classes before summer vacation.
Seniors had already finished their college entrance exams, obtained their results, and left the school, heading towards a bright and brilliant future. In the vast campus, only the freshmen and sophomores remained.
Among the remaining students, half (the entire sophomore year) were discussing the results of the recent joint exam.
The fact that Oliver Scott had injured his right hand was not widely known; only those with connections spanning other high schools were aware. And the school only published internal results, albeit with city rankings, but the scores and positions of students from outside the school were not disclosed.
—— Therefore, when the students saw Marshall Ferreira ranked second in the city, everyone took it for granted and didn’t have any reaction.
It wasn’t until the afternoon, when someone suddenly revealed in the grade group chat that Oliver Scott had scored a total of zero in this joint exam, essentially a blank paper, and became the last in the city. However, this genius answered all the additional questions in math and science correctly, becoming the only person in the city to earn full marks on the additional questions. Someone mentioned overhearing teachers in the office marveling at Oliver Scott’s genius.
The grade group chat erupted.
Until someone asked——
[Marshall Ferreira is still second in the city, while Oliver Scott is last. So who is first in the city this time?]
With this question, there was a brief silence in the group chat, followed by another burst of excitement, as the "social butterflies" quickly declared their intention to find out. Relying on the power of gossip among the people, it took less than half an hour for the answer to appear in the group——
[It’s Marcus Shaw! In the same class as Oliver Scott!]
[This is a dark horse! He started to shine since last semester’s finals, and this midterm seems to have even surpassed Oliver Scott!]
[Ah ah ah, I know him! The amazing guy who teamed up with Oliver Scott for the mecha competition! He’s both handsome and skilled, practically my dream guy!]
...
From that point on, the name Marcus Shaw spread beyond the school, becoming legendary alongside Oliver Scott.
While——
Marshall Ferreira, who was determined to take first place in the city, had worn a dark expression ever since receiving his report card and was gloomy all day. Usually good at hiding his emotions, this sudden blow made it impossible for him to maintain his facade, causing everyone in his class to avoid talking to him, feeling certain that Marshall the academic ace was mentally collapsing.
—— With Oliver Scott gone, another Marcus Shaw comes along. If Oliver Scott had taken the exam, wouldn’t Marshall Ferreira have been third?
Having been in a gloomy mood all day, when the school bell rang, Marshall lost the will to remain, hastily packed his things and headed out, declining several friends’ offers to walk together.
However, just as he turned a corner outside the school gate, Marshall regretted refusing a few friends a few minutes earlier.
Several dark figures loomed over him, surrounding him.
—— "Are you the jerk who used your cousin’s photo to threaten your cousin?"
