Chapter 338: Tendo’s Conspiracy! The Rage of the World’s Strongest Man!
Tokyo Area — Holy Residence, Audience Chamber
The atmosphere had congealed to the freezing point. The silence in the room was heavy, suffocating.
"What did you say?!" Tendo Kikunojo’s sinister old face twisted from extreme shock, the mask of the statesman cracking. "The defensive line at Monolith No. 36... was shattered in a single hit?!"
"Yes, Lord Kikunojo!" The communications officer knelt on the ground, shaking like a sieve, sweat dripping onto the floor. "According to the footage sent back from the front lines... it was a... a giant composed entirely of diamond..."
"A diamond... giant?" Kikunojo muttered to himself. A flash of shock passed through his eyes, but it was fleeting. Immediately, it was replaced by a more intense, feverish madness. Greed.
"Gu... Gurararara... Hahahahaha!"
He let out a neurotic, hair-raising burst of wild laughter that echoed uncomfortably in the large hall. "Interesting! Too interesting! A creature harder than Varanium actually exists! If we can capture him, dissect him, and craft him into a weapon... then my ’Tendo Style Combat Arts’ will reach an unprecedented apex!"
Standing beside the throne, Seitenshi watched the seemingly demonic Kikunojo, her exquisite brows furrowing deeply. "Lord Kikunojo, this is not the time for that. The urgent matter is to deal with the intruders and calm the emotions of the populace!"
"Calm?" Kikunojo’s laughter came to an abrupt halt. He turned his head slowly, looking at Seitenshi with open condescension, as if looking at a naive child. "Lady Seitenshi, you truly are adorably naive. Isn’t this... a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity?"
"Opportunity?"
"That’s right!" Kikunojo’s eyes flickered with the cold light of a venomous snake preparing to strike. "An excellent opportunity to catch those disgusting Cursed Children and these monsters of unknown origin all in one net!"
He walked to the secure communicator, picked up the receiver, and issued an order in a tone devoid of any emotion, as if ordering dinner. "Pass down my order. Immediately lure Gastrea of ’Stage IV’ and above toward the breach at Defense Line 36!"
"Lord Kikunojo! Are you crazy?!" Seitenshi stood up abruptly from the throne, her poise shattering. "Doing that will cause massive civilian casualties! You’re inviting the apocalypse into the city!"
"Casualties?" Kikunojo sneered, his smile filled with a chilling indifference toward human life. "They are merely ants. For the ’purification’ of the Tokyo Area, this small sacrifice is necessary. Furthermore..."
He put down the receiver and looked at the large screen showing the massive breach and the four towering figures standing amidst the smoke. "Aren’t there those few ’powerful’ monsters holding the front? Just let the monsters deal with the monsters. We simply need to sit back and reap the benefits."
—————
Tokyo Area — Breach at Monolith No. 36
Whitebeard and his group had just stepped through the dust and debris into the steel city when piercing alarms resounded through the sky, tearing the peace apart.
Woo— Woo— Woo—!!!
» Emergency Alert! Emergency Alert! « » Large-scale Gastrea response detected! Level... Stage IV or higher! « » Invasion point: Defense Line 36 Breach... «
The broadcast came to an abrupt halt amidst the sound of screaming and static. Following immediately was an even greater panic.
"Gastrea invasion!"
"Heavens! The Guardian God has been destroyed!"
"It’s them! It’s those giants!"
"And those cursed monster children! They brought this disaster!"
Behind the barrier, the streets were packed. Countless citizens who had been watching from the sidelines descended into utter madness the moment they heard the alarm. Fear turned instantly to hate. They projected all their terror, anger, and despair onto the easiest targets—the ragged children Whitebeard had just adopted.
"Get out! You stars of calamity!"
"Kill them! Kill these monsters!"
A jagged stone spun out from the frenzied crowd. It flew through the air, carrying the weight of a city’s prejudice. It struck Aihara Enju precisely on the forehead.
Thud!
With a sickening, muffled sound, bright red blood blossomed and slowly flowed down the girl’s smooth forehead.
"Ugh..." Enju cried out in pain, her small body swaying as tears instantly welled up. Subconsciously, she tightened her grip on Whitebeard’s pant leg, burying her face in the fabric. Those red eyes, which had just lit up with a glimmer of hope, were once again filled with the old fear and helplessness.
The scene from the alleyway was playing out again. No, this was a reality a hundred times more cruel!
"Hahaha! I hit her!"
"Smash her to death! Kill that monster!"
The success of the first stone seemed to open Pandora’s Box. The mob emboldened each other. Countless stones, trash, and even rotting vegetable leaves poured down like rain from all directions toward the children!
"Pops!"
Marco’s face instantly turned dark, his expression shifting from lazy confidence to lethal intent. Blue Phoenix flames surged upward, licking at his shoulders.
"Those bastards!" Jozu’s diamond fists clenched with a cracking sound, the air warping around his grip.
"Unforgivable!" The swords at Vista’s waist hummed with a thirst for blood, reflecting his killing intent.
However...
"Don’t move."
A voice—hoarse, low, yet containing supreme authority—spoke slowly. It wasn’t a shout, but it cut through the noise of the mob. Whitebeard didn’t even turn his head. He just stood there quietly, immobile as a statue, allowing the filthy projectiles to land on his burly body.
The smile on his face had, at some point, completely vanished. His eagle-like eyes slowly swept over the faces before him—faces twisted by fear, faces manic with anger, faces that looked less human than the children they reviled. His gaze was so cold it seemed capable of freezing the soul.
"Monster! What are you looking at?!"
"Hurry up and take your monster brats and get out of the Tokyo Area!"
A man standing closest emboldened himself, pointing a shaking finger at Whitebeard’s nose and shouting curses. He thought this giant, who hadn’t retaliated yet, wouldn’t dare lay a hand on "ordinary people" like them.
However, he was wrong. Dead wrong.
Whitebeard slowly raised a hand that was larger than a water tank. Not to block. Instead, he gripped the massive naginata on his back—a weapon resembling the pillar that holds up the sea—Murakumogiri!
Hum—!
The air grew heavy. With one hand, he slowly raised the Supreme Grade Blade that weighed as much as a mountain.
And then.
Under the horrified, sudden realization of tens of thousands in the city, he slammed it heavily down onto the concrete street beneath his feet!
BOOM—!!!!!!!!
A massive sound that shook the heavens and earth exploded outward! The entire world seemed to hit the mute button at that moment!
Centering on the hilt of Murakumogiri, terrifying cracks resembling a spiderweb spread frantically in all directions, tearing through the asphalt! The hard concrete street crumbled like a fragile biscuit!
An invisible, destructive shockwave of Conqueror’s Haki swept through the area! The crowd that had been cursing the loudest and rushing to the front didn’t even have the chance to scream before they were sent flying by the airwave, rolling like ragdolls, coughing up blood and falling unconscious on the spot!
Just a casual slam of the blade caused destruction far more terrifying than military bombardment!
The entire Tokyo Area fell into a deathly silence. The shouting died instantly. Everyone’s face was written with dullness and absolute, primal fear. They opened their mouths, but no sound came out. They wanted to run, but found their legs felt as heavy as lead, refusing to obey!
They could only watch helplessly as the man standing like a Demon God in the center of the ruins slowly raised his head. Whitebeard’s cold gaze locked onto the man who had thrown the stone earlier.
His voice wasn’t loud. But like the whisper of a devil from the deepest hell, it rang clearly in everyone’s ears.
"Just now..."
"Who was it that made my daughter cry?"
The targeted man’s legs gave out. His crotch instantly became wet as a foul stench spread. He scrambled backward, clawing at the ground, wanting to explain, wanting to kowtow and beg for mercy.
However, right at that moment, a voice carrying high-and-mighty contempt and mockery drifted down from a high-rise building not far away.
"I asked them to do it. So what?"
"You lower-class monster, crawling out of the stinking ditch."
Everyone turned toward the sound. They saw the supreme ruler of the Holy Residence, Tendo Kikunojo, standing with his hands behind his back atop a skyscraper. Behind him were hundreds of black-clad guards wielding pitch-black katanas, their auras cold and disciplined.
He looked down at Whitebeard from above, his gaze like one looking at livestock waiting to be slaughtered.
"Don’t get me wrong, I’m not targeting you." The corner of Kikunojo’s mouth hooked into a cruel arc. He spread his arms as if to embrace the entire world, or perhaps to crush it. "I’m saying that all monsters present, including those cursed mongrels..."
"Today, you all must die here!"
As his voice fell, a mass of shadows, black and endless like a tide, surged in through the massive breach Jozu had smashed open! The earth rumbled with the stampede. Countless crimson eyes, filled with tyranny and hunger, suddenly lit up within the darkness!
The Gastrea Army... had arrived at the city gates!
