On the Day I Was Kicked Out of the Wealthy Family, I Had a Flash Marriage with a Tycoon-Chapter 146: Ill Intentions
The Lockwood Group conference room.
Jasper Lockwood’s phone rang again. This time, it was a call from Tristan Sinclair.
He glanced down at the screen, his handsome, cold face unreadable. After a moment’s pause, he picked up the phone. "Hello? What’s up?"
On the other end, Tristan said, "I have something to tell you. Silas Coldwell might be up to something with Chloe again. You should be careful."
"What did you find out?" Jasper asked.
Tristan replied, "It’s not that. Someone saw Silas block her path today. He didn’t do much, though—just intentionally cut off her car and then left. No idea what he’s playing at."
"Who saw them? Where?"
"Just a friend. They saw it over on Veridia Street."
"Got it."
Jasper Lockwood put down his phone. Everyone in the conference room cautiously watched his expression. After a moment, he abruptly announced, "Meeting adjourned!"
The Sinclair Group, CEO’s Office.
Tristan Sinclair tossed his phone back onto the desk and looked at Damian Rivers, who was sitting across from him. "Call’s over. Satisfied now?"
"Mhm," Damian Rivers grunted. "Thanks."
Tristan stared at him and added, "How did you end up with Chloe Sterling anyway? You don’t... actually like her, do you?"
Damian let out a laugh. "Does it matter if I do? It’s not like I can have her."
Tristan said, "Good, as long as you know your place."
Damian: "..."
"So, again, why were you with her today?"
"My aunt is sick, and her condition wasn’t good, so I asked her to come take a look."
"Your aunt’s sick? How is she now?"
"She’s woken up already. Chloe prescribed her some medicine, so she should be fine." After a pause, Damian added, "You have no idea. Chloe Sterling’s medical skills are incredible. Even that old man, Zhou, was blown away by her."
Tristan raised an eyebrow but said nothing.
’Of course he knew. How could the skills of the famous top-level pharmacist, Lynn Chester, be anything but exceptional? But this was a secret Chloe Sterling wanted to keep, so he couldn’t very well tell Damian.’
"She wouldn’t have gotten into the lab at the First Medical College if she didn’t have some serious skills."
Damian said, "I think even the lab is a waste of her talent. She’s meant for bigger and better things. In fact, she..."
"Stop," Tristan cut him off. "That’s not your concern. Chloe Sterling is capable and smart; she has her own plans. Besides, she has Jasper Lockwood. You’d be wise to keep your distance."
A flicker of disappointment crossed Damian’s eyes. "I know. For now, I just want to be her friend. If she and Jasper Lockwood break up someday, at least I’ll have an advantage."
’You’d still have to beat out Silas Coldwell,’ Tristan thought, but then decided against discouraging him further.
"Anyway, let’s drop it. I have to go, I’ve got something to do. You get back to work." With that, Damian stood up.
Tristan said casually, "See yourself out."
Damian shot back, "Can’t you even pretend to be polite?" 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶
Tristan replied, "No need with you."
Damian didn’t bother replying and walked out of the office.
Chloe Sterling was in the martial arts gym’s training room, punching and kicking a training dummy.
Chase Langdon walked in, saw her murderous expression, and swallowed hard. "What’s... going on? Who pissed you off?"
Chloe didn’t say a word, just kept landing punch after punch on the dummy’s head.
Chase walked over and steadied the dummy, which was swaying from the blows. Looking at her, he said, "Do you really dislike Damian Rivers that much? I mean... it’s just being regular friends. It’s not that serious, is it?"
Chloe pulled off her gloves and said coolly, "It’s not because of him."
"Then what is it? Didn’t you just go out with him to see a patient?"
Chloe walked to the side, picked up a bottle of water from the table, opened it, and took a sip before saying, "I ran into Silas Coldwell on the way back."
"What? You ran into him?! What does he want now?"
Chloe squeezed the bottle, her eyes darkening slightly. "He said he has news about Master. I don’t know if it’s true or not."
Chase frowned. "He wants to make a deal? What does he want?"
"He wants me to go see him tonight and take over the Nocturne Group’s Crestfall branch. Then he’ll tell me what he knows about Master."
"How can he be sure it’s really Master? Chloe, I know you’re desperate to find him, but Silas Coldwell is cunning and treacherous. You can’t just trust him."
"I know." Chloe’s fingers tightened, suddenly crushing the water bottle. "Back in Country E, I never should have told him I was looking for Master."
Back then, she had saved Silas’s life. He said he wanted to repay her, so she thought she could use his connections to find Master. That’s why she told him about her search.
Silas had promised to help her look, but she never heard anything from him about it.
Now, he was suddenly claiming to have news. Chloe didn’t quite believe him, but she was also worried that it might really be about Master and that she would miss her chance.
"Has he ever used this to get to you before?" Chase asked.
Chloe shook her head. "No. This is the first time, which is why I can’t tell if he’s lying or not. If he’d used this to trick me before, it wouldn’t be so hard to judge."
After a moment of thought, Chase added, "Even if it is true, you can’t agree to join the Nocturne Group. Unless... you want to break up with Jasper Lockwood."
Chloe: "..."
"Chloe, I want to find Master as soon as possible too, but not like this. You said it yourself: you and Silas walk different paths and can’t work together."
"I’m not going to join the Nocturne Group, but I want to negotiate with him."
"Did you just meet Silas Coldwell yesterday? You think he’s going to negotiate with you?"
A cunning glint flashed in Chloe’s beautiful eyes. "Since we’re not even sure it’s about Master, why not?"
Noticing the scheme brewing in her eyes, Chase said, "You’re not thinking of tricking him by pretending to agree, are you?"
"No." After a pause, Chloe added, "Stay out of this. I know what I’m doing."
"Don’t do anything reckless!"
Just then, the door was pushed open and Jean Kensington walked in. "Reckless? What are you going to do, Chloe?"
Chloe glanced at her and asked abruptly, "Have you been keeping an eye on Silas Coldwell’s movements lately?"
Jean replied as she walked, "No, why?"
"He says he has news about my master and wants me to go see him."
Jean looked astonished. "Silas Coldwell found your master? Are you sure?"
Chloe said, "Not sure."
Jean: "...So are you going or not?"
After a few seconds, Chloe said, "I’m going."
"So when are you going?"
"After he’s done with his work. Probably tonight."
"What!" Jean’s eyes flew wide. "You’re going to see him late at night?! That’s... not a good idea, is it? What if he has ulterior motives? Oh, wait, he always has ulterior motives where you’re concerned."
Chloe: "..."
