North American Detective: I am Proficient in All Kinds of Gun Quick Draws-Chapter 647 - 359: Follow-up 2 Mentor Anthony_2
He found it somewhat absurd. His current status was extraordinary, allowing him to read many secret archives and materials inaccessible to ordinary people. But no matter where he looked, the world seemed very normal.
Yet, Carol nodded seriously. "I don't know if I should call them Mutants," she said, "but a long time ago, a mystical celestial event occurred. I've found references to it in the historical legends of many countries."
"What celestial event?"
Dean was intrigued. He had never been very interested in myths and legends, so he hadn't made an effort to understand them.
"The Blood Moon!"
Carol tossed a stack of collected materials to Dean. "Whether it's ancient Huaxia, ancient Egypt, or other ancient civilizations, they all have records of it."
Dean opened them and read:
"When the moon changes color, disaster will follow."
"Red shall signal war and strife."
"God shall send ten plagues..."
"Werewolves..."
These records were disorganized, but all featured the Blood Moon.
After reading them, Dean shook his head. "You should know that a Blood Moon is a natural astronomical spectacle that occurs during a total lunar eclipse. When a total lunar eclipse happens on a full moon, the moon is completely shadowed by the Earth. Light from the sun's red spectrum penetrates Earth's atmosphere and, after refraction, casts a dark red glow on the moon, making the full moon appear reddish. That's what's commonly referred to as a Blood Moon."
"Ancient people didn't understand this and liked to connect it to myths and religion. Plus, many rebels enjoyed using it as a rallying cry. That's why there are so many coincidences."
Actually, Dean knew Carol wouldn't be so naive. To say these things, she must have more substantial evidence. But he couldn't be the one to point it out.
Dean sensed that Carol hadn't called him over this time merely to find Mentor Anthony. He wanted to take charge of this operation.
Watching Dean feign ignorance, Carol took a deep breath and reluctantly tossed a piece of parchment to him. "Alright, I concede. After I discovered Mentor Anthony was very interested in the rumors about the Blood Moon, I spent time retracing the path he'd traveled in his early years. I went over it again and, in an ancient tomb, discovered a legend."
"Hmm, continue," Dean urged. As he spoke, his hands flashed. A fork shot out, piercing the throat of an inconspicuous Black woman.
At the sight, a cold light flashed in Carol's eyes. With a wave of her hand, the four vacant-eyed mercenaries behind her raised their guns without hesitation and opened fire in all directions.
In an instant, the entire small tavern fell silent. Even stranger, despite the gunfire, no other sounds came from outside.
It should be noted that this small town had its own police force and private security!
"Seems those hyenas have a keen sense of smell," Carol remarked, her speech quickening. "It's a legend about the Black Death in Europe. Supposedly, because so many people died that year, the Blood Moon appeared particularly sinister. After the Blood Moon, some extremely depraved individuals gained various supernatural abilities, even influencing governance in many places.
The owner of that tomb was one of them. He was a depraved man with a taste for human flesh, infamous for his heinous acts. At the time, he was infected with the Black Death and nearly at death's door. But after that year's Blood Moon, he not only recovered completely but also acquired a body as terrifying as a wild beast's. Even many others who had gained supernatural abilities were no match for him. He ruled that region for more than a year." 𝑓𝓇𝘦ℯ𝘸𝘦𝑏𝓃𝑜𝘷ℯ𝑙.𝑐𝑜𝓂
Licking her somewhat dry lips, Carol continued, "There were quite a few such people back then calling themselves God's Beloved. However, the tomb's owner was unlucky. He offended a Countess who loved bathing in fresh blood. In the end, she made his heart explode, and his body was thrown into a valley.
He didn't die, but he lost his former abilities. Just as he was preparing to take revenge on the Countess, he discovered that most of God's Beloved like him had suddenly died tragically, and a few had gone missing. The tomb's owner, eager to regain his former abilities, spent the rest of his life investigating. In the end, he found that all the missing God's Beloved had headed to the ancient continent of Africa."
Dean stroked his chin. "Are you saying the region where these so-called God's Beloved eventually went missing was the Sahara Desert?"
Carol nodded. "Yes. And for some reason, the records of those God's Beloved were destroyed. Since they had only appeared for less than a year, and nothing as bizarre as that Blood Moon occurred again, no records were passed down."
Indeed, anyone in their right mind hearing Carol's words would wonder if she had a few screws loose. But Dean was different. He had transmigration and a system panel. What couldn't he accept?
Dean shrugged. "Alright, so you want me to go with you into the desert to investigate this secret?"
Yet, Carol shook her head. She took off the gemstone necklace from around her neck, tossed it onto the table, and said with a sorrowful expression, "I just wanted someone I don't dislike to know that I once existed in this world. I'm dying, Dean."
She smiled. "Do you know why Mentor Anthony went to the desert? Because he had cancer. He didn't want to die, so he chose to try his luck in the desert. That so-called golden treasure wasn't what he wanted. By the way, besides all this, you've encountered organizations researching the mysteries of the human body before, right?"
Dean nodded. Not only had he encountered them, but he had also absorbed that organization.
Carol glanced at the time on her watch and slowly stood up. "All of this was orchestrated by Mentor Anthony, including me. I was his backup plan. When he first gave me this necklace as a gift, he also told me something."
"What was it?"
"'When you find no way forward, follow my footsteps.'" Carol's eyes flashed with resentment. "Only later did I realize that 'no way forward' meant cancer. This necklace, worn long-term, is carcinogenic!"
She took a cigarette from her pocket, put it in her mouth, lit it, and took a deep drag. Then, she looked at Dean again. "At first, I was angry. I wondered why he didn't choose you, Dean. Later, I understood why."
"Why?"
"Because Mentor Anthony was afraid you'd kill him outright! Hahaha!"
With a smile, Carol disappeared into the tavern, now filled with corpses.
Dean glanced at the necklace on the table. He considered it for a moment, then with a flick of his hand, stored the necklace in his dimensional space.
「About ten minutes later.」
A Caucasian man in a suit entered the tavern and bowed respectfully to Dean. "Mr. Dean, I ask that you please do not interfere in this matter."
Dean glanced at him. "MI6?"
The man in the suit nodded without saying more.
If this were the Dean of the past, he would have already been eliminated by this man's agents. Now, they didn't dare. Neither did the people backing him.
Dean sighed. "I hate trouble. Don't bother me or my family in the future!"
After speaking, he started to remove his clothes, piece by piece, until he was naked. Only then did Dean shrug, flicked his whip, and say, "Any more detection devices? Hurry up! I need to get back for my daughter's parent-teacher conference!"
The man in the suit was speechless.
However, it was naturally better if the other party cooperated.
「One year later.」
A year to the day after Carol's disappearance, Dean, disguised as a Black man, arrived once again at the Sahara Desert.
He looked at the somewhat menacing desert in the distance and sighed softly. "Mentor Anthony, Carol... I hope you're still alive. Otherwise, I'll have nowhere to vent this anger!"
Glancing at the sky one last time, he slowly walked towards the deadly expanse in the distance.
