Chapter 73 - Unknown Entity

In the World of the Living, Akihara Town—

Snowflakes drifted silently onto the streets below. Around them, people still laughed, danced, and celebrated, oblivious. But Higashi Shuuichi and his group had already snapped to full alert.

"An unknown entity attacked you? And it devoured every Shinigami it defeated?"

Shuuichi's brow furrowed at the panicked 13th Division member's report.

"Isn't that just a Hollow? What's so 'unknown' about that?" Soifon asked, frowning. "Your division should have well-established countermeasures against Hollows."

Unless it was an Adjuchas-class Menos... But then again—

She looked at Shuuichi. No, that wouldn't be a problem. Whether it was herself as a 3rd Seat or Shuuichi as a Vice-Captain, both had combat strength far exceeding normal Captain-level. Even with 80% of their power sealed in the Living World, they were no pushovers.

And in emergency cases, activating that sealed power could be excused after the fact.

"But that thing definitely isn't a Hollow! We've never seen any Hollow that looks like that!" the 13th Division Shinigami insisted, desperate.

"Where did it appear? Was it at a border surveillance point?" Shuuichi asked, certain he already knew the answer.

"Y-yes, Vice-Captain Higashi! It showed up at the easternmost surveillance post! It was the source of the emergency signal—do you... know what it is?"

The Shinigami looked stunned—he hadn't even described the thing yet, but Shuuichi had already guessed the location.

"I have a rough idea," Shuuichi replied, nodding slowly. "It's probably not a Hollow. But it's close enough. A highly dangerous being. Take me there."

He didn't spell it out. His knowledge came from wandering through the Great Spirit Book Gallery with Aizen years ago. A fleeting memory—but a chilling one.

"Shuuichi-sama, I'd like to come with you. I might be of some use," Soifon immediately volunteered.

"Me too, Shuuichi-sama!" Shuusuke piped up. He wasn't a genius like Gin, and hadn't even achieved Shikai yet, but his heart was in the right place.

"You should sit this one out, Shuusuke," Gin said, stepping up in his stead. "Let me go. I may not be strong, but my Shinsō might be helpful."

Normally, Gin wouldn't have gotten involved. But he'd seen Rangiku's disheartened expression—he knew she wanted to help Shuuichi, but also knew she lacked the strength. She wouldn't say it, but it stung.

So Gin took the hit for her, stepping in.

Sure enough, when he spoke, Rangiku's expression softened.

"Alright then, Shuuichi-sama, you go. Shuusuke and I will cheer you on from here! Gin—you better not drag him down!"

"I won't," Gin promised, his eyes fixed on her.

Moments later, they arrived at the scene.

Four seated officers from the 13th Division were surrounding a jet-black creature with a tuning fork-shaped head and a pair of nondescript wings on its back.

"That spiritual pressure..."

Soifon narrowed her eyes. The thing moved with uncanny agility, dodging every Kidō blast thrown its way.

"Its power feels like Gillian-level at best... but why is it so slippery?"

Its dodging wasn't fast—nowhere near Sonído or Shunpo speeds—but it was just efficient enough to glide through every attack.

"Because this thing doesn't operate by our rules," Shuuichi said coldly, drawing his Zanpakutō.

"You're saying it's not from Hueco Mundo or Soul Society?" Gin asked.

Shuuichi didn't answer. Instead, he raised his blade.

"Advance, He Who Wields Tactics! Zen Heisha, Kimyō!"

"Bakudō #61: Six Rods Light Prison!"

A gust of wind whispered past his ears. Then—a roar of fury rang from the unknown creature as six glowing rods of light silently pinned it in place.

"As expected of you, Shuuichi-sama," Soifon murmured.

"Shuuichi-sama," Gin said too, catching the cue in his tone.

"I leave it to you," Shuuichi replied. He knew Gin had noticed what he had: the Rikujōkōrō was unstable. With 80% of his power sealed, his Kidō wasn't up to par.

He didn't want to release his limiter unless absolutely necessary. The Central 46 would be asking questions for weeks.

But Gin wasn't bound by that rule—yet.

"Shoot to kill—Shinsō!"

Gin didn't hesitate. His blade extended in an instant, striking toward the trapped target.

Clack!

The creature let out a strange, garbled sound—eerily close to human speech—as its flat arms crossed, catching the blade midair before it could strike true.

"Gotcha," Gin whispered, snake-like eyes flashing from behind silver bangs.

From above, a rain of fully-incanted Hadō spells crashed down on the creature.

A feint.

Shuuichi glanced sideways at Gin, marveling again how this little bastard kept surprising him. Everything he was trying to teach Shuusuke? Seemed like Gin was the one absorbing it all.

"Here's hoping Aizen knows what he's getting into," Shuuichi muttered, watching the bombardment with detached amusement.

Yup. Just a diligent employee, doing his boss's bidding.
