Nightmare Assault-Chapter 491: Since We’re Here
“Do not split up.” Jiang Cheng turned back to Yu Yu and reminded her, “Do not aim your torch at others. Pay attention above your head and below your feet.”
Yu Yu was scared. She understood the need to be careful around her feet, but why above her head? She thought about it and didn’t ask for details. She didn’t think the question was appropriate. Plus, the man had to have his reasons for saying that.
Yu Yu trusted Jiang Cheng. The man had something that earned her trust. When Jiang Cheng ignored the protests to save Du Feng and Kui Yi, her trust was verified.
Jiang Cheng didn’t realise so many things crossed the girl’s mind. He kept looking around. It would be a lie to say that he was not scared. When they entered the morgue, Jiang Cheng used a heavy bed to block the door so the light from the corridor could filter in. At least they wouldn’t be trapped inside the morgue.
“Found it!” The kneeling Cao Yang suddenly announced. His voice wasn’t loud, but he sounded excited. Jiang Cheng hurried over with Yu Yu behind him. The flashlight shone about. Yu Yu was worried that something was hiding in the dark.
Every morgue cabinet was tagged with a number. They had a stainless steel handle. They looked like giant drawers. Jiang Cheng saw the tag with the name Zhang Zhaowei. It was written with a black pen. The penmanship was sharp and severe.
Cao Yang was careful. He didn’t open the drawer rashly. The three examined the surroundings.
They didn’t find anything. Jiang Cheng took a deep breath and slowly pulled on the handle. The stainless steel was abnormally cold. Cao Yang and Yu Yu stared at the cabinet. The drawer gradually pulled out. The cold air seeped in, lowering the temperature. 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞
A corpse underneath a white cape appeared before them. The cape featured a human silhouette. Jiang Cheng didn’t hesitate and pulled off the cloth. The next second, what they saw shocked them. In her panic, Yu Yu’s hand shivered, and she almost dropped her phone.
An old man lay quietly in the drawer. He looked at peace. He didn’t have any obvious injury.
The creepy thing was… they saw this old man 10 minutes ago!
He even told Jiang Cheng a crazy story! So he was Zhang Zhaowei!
After he calmed down, Jiang Cheng made the connections. Zhang Zhaowei died two months ago. In the old man’s story, the walking corpse was delivered to the hospital two months ago. He was the main character in the story! He was the walking corpse!
“Don’t be scared.” Jiang Cheng consoled the two. “I don’t think he means us any harm, or we wouldn’t have survived until now.” That was what he said, but Jiang Cheng was worried that the corpse might open its eyes and grin at them, asking why they came so late.
However, since they were there, they couldn’t return empty-handed. Jiang Cheng took out a cigarette from his pocket and lit it up. He placed it beside the elder. Jiang Cheng looked at the old man’s face and turned to Yu Yu and Cao Yang. “The elder is an example for us. We should offer him some bows.”
Cao Yang and Yu Yu didn’t even need to prepare. They gave the corpse three standard bows. However, when they were done, Yu Yu realised the space beside her was empty.
Cao Yang widened his eyes when he saw Jiang Cheng kneeling on the ground to give the corpse two kowtows. When he stood up, Jiang Cheng’s eyes were red with tears. Those who didn’t know would assume he was the old man’s grandson.
“This…” Yu Yu’s voice interrupted Cao Yang’s thoughts. Yu Yu covered her mouth as she stared at something. Cao Yang followed her gaze. He was shocked.
The cigarette Jiang Cheng offered had almost burned out. It looked like someone had thoroughly enjoyed it.
Seeing this, Cao Yang immediately went down on his knees and offered the elder three kowtows. Yu Yu did the same. For some reason, after he did that, Cao Yang felt better. The chill around him dissipated. Then, things became simpler. Jiang Cheng swiftly examined the elder’s corpse.
“There are no visible wounds.” Jiang Cheng covered the old man’s face and slowly pushed the body back. “He probably died of natural causes.”
In other words, his death was unrelated to the ghost. Therefore, the former director was not involved in the sin in Room 624, or the ghost wouldn’t have let him die so peacefully. What he did was to cover up the truth and found a good home for Xiang Nan’s daughter, Zhao Ru. He did something wrong, but he wasn’t a complete sinner.
Before they left, Jiang Cheng suddenly remembered something. He pulled open the drawer next to Zhang Zhaowei. It was also an elder. He was slightly large and short. He was the old man who was playing games with Zhang Zhaowei. Thinking back to what Zhang Zhaowei said, he was a regular at this hospital and had a few friends. It looked like the people at the morgue shared a good relationship.
The travellers left the morgue. When the iron door closed, everyone felt better. Thankfully, nothing happened. Cao Yang looked at Jiang Cheng with admiration. He believed the kowtows were valuable.
“Let’s go.”
Jiang Cheng led them to the elevator. Thankfully, the elevator hadn’t left. However, after they pressed the button, he realised something was wrong. The elevator doors didn’t open.
“What is going on?” Cao Yang pressed the button again, but the doors appeared to be welded shut. It refused to budge.
At the same time, a strange creaking voice came from the other end of the corridor. It sounded like several giant drawers slowly opening…
Yu Yu’s pupils shrank. That was the morgue!
