Chapter 472: Push and Pull

Cao Yang looked around but didn’t notice anything out of place. He turned the corner. The corridor was connected to the hospital lobby. People were talking and walking around. It was still raining heavily outside. Perhaps too few people came there, so even if the lights broke, no one fixed them.

The corner of the ceiling was black with mould. There was also a spiderweb fluttering in the wind. Cao Yang didn’t want to waste time. The day hadn’t fully darkened. Based on what Kui Yi said, when the sky fully darkened, those strange things would show up.

He slowly looked around. He felt better when he heard Jiang Cheng and Blind Zheng chatting. Next to him was a small door. Cao Yang had to bend over to enter it. The door wasn’t locked. Cao Yang slowly pushed the door open. The place was dark. His hand searched around the door before he found a thin rope. With a light yank, the room lit up.

This was a small storage room. Thankfully, there was one window. The window was half-open, letting the occasional wind blow in. The room wasn’t as suffocating as the other room. However, it was cold. It was impossible to sleep there at night.

Other than a simple wooden bed, there was a wooden cupboard near the wall. The cupboard looked old. It had a dark red paint coating. Some places were heavily worn. The red paint peeled to reveal the wood underneath. Cao Yang felt discomfited encountering a red cupboard at such a place.

His heart calmed as he heard the chatter from next door. He rushed to the bed. A few old clothes were tossed on it. Cao Yang picked up a military green long coat. He searched it and found nothing. Then, he inspected the bed. Other than some wrinkled lottery tickets, there were also empty bags from purchasing wines under the bed. It was evident that Blind Zheng was purposely keeping them. As for why…

When Cao Yang saw the small sentence on the bags, he understood everything. Once one collected ten bags, one could exchange them for a new bottle.

He noticed that while the room was messy, there was no cigarette butt. Blind Zheng wasn’t a smoker.

Eventually, Cao Yang turned his attention to the red cupboard. To Cao Yang’s surprise, it was locked. Cao Yang couldn’t get it. Could there be something inside worth stealing?

Then, he realised he was wrong. The lock was a decoration. It snapped with a light tug.

After the heavy wooden lid was lifted, the smell of mould hit him. The cupboard was filled with clothes and blankets. There was a wrinkly pair of black pants. It was rolled up and stuffed into the corner. Even the cotton stuffing had leaked out. The content looked fine. Blind Zheng had a tough life. The contents of the cupboard were his everything. Cao Yang placed the clothes back. With a light tap, he tried to put everything back in its place. However, the tap caused him to freeze.

His eyes slowly moved down to examine the clothes inside the cupboard. The touch… it didn’t feel right. Technically, a tap on a cupboard filled with clothes should feel soft and stuffy. However, his tap felt… bouncy.

His throat moved. Cao Yang slowly moved aside the top few layers of clothing until… a pale face was revealed. The facial muscles were frozen as the eyes stared right ahead.

“Brother Jiang.” Blind Zheng was swaying from the alcohol. “We… are destined to meet!”

“That’s right!” Jiang Cheng laughed. “I feel close to Brother Zheng.” Jiang Cheng kept glancing at the door. Cao Yang had left for a while already. Why hadn’t he returned? If the man weren’t dumb, he wouldn’t be gone for so long. Jiang Cheng’s first reaction was that something had happened. However, after Cao Yang left, Jiang Cheng perked up his ears. He hadn’t heard anything worrying.

“Right!” Blind Zheng was in the mood. He insisted on toasting Jiang Cheng. “Cheers!”

Jiang Cheng raised his glass perfunctorily.

Blind Zheng’s nose was red from the alcohol. He burped and picked up the chopsticks to throw some peanuts into his mouth. After a few more bites, the nausea receded. However, Jiang Cheng’s expression shifted. He finally understood where the problem was. It was not that Cao Yang couldn’t return, but he didn’t dare to!

Blind Zheng, across from him, was not human. He was a ghost in disguise! A man who could barely hold the cup could manipulate the chopsticks to pick up the peanuts to feed himself accurately?!

Even Jiang Cheng had to use his fingers to grab the peanuts.

Jiang Cheng smiled and drank another sip. He continued to chat with Blind Zheng. However, his focus was on how to escape. He couldn’t rely on Cao Yang. Jiang Cheng believed the real Blind Zheng was dead. He was probably killed when he went to look for the pillow. The time was short. The ghost couldn’t have moved Blind Zheng’s corpse. So, the body was probably next door.

It would explain why Cao Yang hadn’t returned. He found Blind Zheng’s corpse during his search and realised the person in the room was a ghost. He sneaked away and left. After cursing out Cao Yang’s family, Jiang Cheng smiled and continued to chat with the ghost.

The ghost hadn’t made its move because it was waiting for the right timing.

Jiang Cheng was also waiting.

“Brother… Jiang.” Blind Zheng clapped his hands. “Don’t you find this pouch mysterious?”

“What do you mean?” Jiang Cheng acted interested.

“Yes.” Blind Zheng continued, “I wonder what is inside. What is so mysterious?”

“You’re right.” Jiang Cheng narrowed his eyes. He had an idea what the ghost was planning. Since Blind Zheng was fake, there had to be something wrong with the pouch. He would die if he opened it.

“Shall we open it?” Blind Zheng said casually, but the desire in his eyes was plain for Jiang Cheng to see.
