Chapter 158: CHARLOTTE & GEORGE (7)

Paige and Lauren stared at the clue deeply, trying to unravel exactly where they would find it.

"Let’s keep looking among the flowers, since it said where flowers grew." She suggested.

"This isn’t a real butterfly but it should be what we’re looking for." Lauren held a papercut butterfly, coloured gold and blue. The wind caused its wings to flutter.

They ticked off the butterfly from their list.

Liam and Serina had also found a clue.

"In the heart of a tree, where squirrels roam free, look inside where secrets hide."

"This should be easy." Serina said, looking around the few trees in the garden.

After a few minutes, they still hadn’t found anything.

Serina huffed, "We’ve searched all the trees in the garden, and I haven’t seen anything on the list!"

Liam had a thoughtful look on his face as he stared at the paper. His eyes roved around the garden and stopped on a large log laying inconspicuously on the ground.

He found a small toy hidden inside the hollow log.

"This should be it." He said, raising the toy.

Serina gasped in surprise. They had searched all the trees but had found nothing. Who would have thought it was on a log that was lying on the ground?

They ticked the item on the list with the piece of charcoal.

There was one group who hadn’t even found a clue.

"We still haven’t found anything after searching for so long." Nova complained, sitting on a bench.

Lilith sat down with her, looking around the garden.

"Let’s continue our search." Nova stood up. Her feet stepped on something. "Hm?" She bent down.

It was a piece of paper with a symbol sticking out a bit from under the bench. "Give me the list, Lilith."

Lilith came up to her holding the list and handed it to her. Nova scanned the list and stopped at the one.

"Note with symbols!" She exclaimed happily. "Lilith we found an item on the list." She ticked the item.

"Let’s search for the next one." Nova led Lilith to continue.

"I see something." Lilith said, pointed somewhere.

"Really?" Nova turned to where Lilith was pointing. There was a folded note hanging on a tree.

"How do we get up there?" Nova muttered. She looked around her. "Perhaps, I can throw stones."

She picked up pebbles to throw at the branch the note lay on. Lilith did the same, but the pebbles didn’t go far.

Finally, Nova’s stone hit the branch, causing the note to fall. She rushed over and picked it up. "Are there to notes with symbols?" She asked herself, confused.

"Rest your feet, take a seat, where conversations are sweet."

"..."

After they had found the item, they found the clue for it.

In Aristia’s group.

"This is harder than I thought." Alicia muttered.

They had stopped at a bed of daisies. "There’s nothing different about these flowers." Wade stated.

Aristia hummed, "Maybe we have to look closely." She approached the bed of daisies. One of them had a red dot on it that wasn’t very noticeable if not looked at closely.

"This should be it. Same as all, but different as well." She showed them the spot that none of the other daisies had.

Alicia ticked the flowers off the list.

In Beatrix and Juno’s group.

"Where feathered friends come for a splash, in a bowl where water’s clear and fresh." Beatrix read, her brows knitting together in thought.

"Feathered friends are birds." Juno chirped.

"Where in the garden can birds stay in a bowl." Beatrix muttered.

"A bird bath!" Juno gasped out.

Just as Juno had guessed, they found a feather hidden near a bird bath.

In Ivan and Alaric’s group.

They found a clue hidden under a rock after a lot of searching.

"Where water dances and fish may play, seek a treasure hidden away." Ivan read it out.

Their ears were drawn to the sound of the water fountain.

"Could it be the fountain?" Alaric asked.

"It could be... but fish aren’t in the fountain. We can still check though."

They moved around the water fountain, still not seeing anything.

Alaric climbed onto the fountain, large sprinkles of water splashing on them due to the rush of water coming from the fountain.

"Allie, no! You’ll get wet." Ivan tried to stop him.

Alaric ignored him, gigling. He had learnt from Aristia that one had to step out from their comfort zone to get something, and that there was often more to something than met the eye.

He explained to Ivan. "Just because we can’t see it, doesn’t mean it’s not there. There might be something hidden where we cannot see."

He then went forward, more water pouring on his body as he approached the statue on the water fountain. He could see something colourful beneath the statue.

He reached out and picked it up. It was a seashell. Because of the constant downpour of water from the fountain, it was perfectly concealed beneath the fountain.

Ivan was stunned when he saw it, staring at Alaric in surprise. Even he hadn’t thought that way.

He ticked off the seashell from the list.

"Well done, Allie. I didn’t even think of that."

Alaric nodded with a smile, water still dripping from his clothes and hair. He slowly climbed out of the fountain and handed the shell to Ivan.

When the time elapsed, everyone returned to the clearing.

They checked the list, eager to see who had found the most items.

"The winner is..." Adeline trailed off, "Oh no, the winners are Princess Aristia’s group and Master Liam’s group."

They had tied.

"I wonder what the prize will be." Serina turned to Beatrix.

The prize was presented. It was a plate of bite sized cakes.

"..."

Staring at the prize, the children were speechless. They stared at Aristia and shook their heads with a knowing look.

[What?] Aristia shrugged. Didn’t they know that bite sized food was delicious?

She went forward and took a cake, popping it into her mouth elegantly.

"This prize will be shared, any disagreements?" She asked.

They all shook their heads. It was just food. They also went forward to have some cake.

"Wait... Isn’t this the same cake as those served in The Vanilla Courtyard?" Paige asked curiously.

"...!"

The Anton kids and royal siblings paused, then chuckled at the same time. It was a nervous kind of laugh.

Before any of them could speak, Aristia replied, "The Vanilla Courtyard sent this to us."

Nova was surprised, "The Vanilla Courtyard sends food?"

"Yes. They called it delivery. They bring food to people’s homes when you order. It’s a recent development they devised and decided to test it out."

The others were just stunned and surprised, while those who were aware were both surprised and impressed at how Aristia had come up with such an idea.

Before they could ask further questions, Aristia turned to Alaric, finally noticing the state he was in.

She furrowed her brows at his clothes that were drying on his body, and his hair that was clinging to his cheeks. "Did you fall into the pond?"

There was an artificial pond in the Grand Duke’s Mansion.

Alaric smiled cheekily, "I climbed into the fountain."

Aristia facepalmed, "Owen hid the seashells in the fountain, didn’t he?" She asked in a voice only the both of them could hear.

Alaric laughed and raised the seashell in his hand.

"You should change out of your clothes, so you won’t catch a cold."

Alaric nodded and left the garden to do as she said.

Aristia glanced at Adeline who covered the cakes.

"After Alaric returns, we will continue to taste the prize." Aristia explained. It would be unfair for Alaric to return, only to find that all the cakes were eaten.

"You can continue your activities till then." She said.

"What’s that for?" Alicia asked.

"That’s clay," Aristia explained, looking at the direction Alicia was pointing at. She added, "for pottery."

"Wouldn’t that get out hands dirty?" Serina asked.

"That’s the point." Aristia replied. "I’m just joking. But your hands will get dirty, that’s sand."

Staring at all the activities, Wade could understand why it was stated in the invitation letter to bring casual clothes. So that even if their clothes got dirty, they would have something to change into when leaving.

His gaze settled on Aristia. This princess arranged activities that could dirty their hands, like pottery, and could stain their clothes, like painting.

Back when he lived as a commoner, the children usually played with sand, happily getting their hands muddy. But in nobility, the children detested things like that.

But here was the third princess, one of the highest in status among the children in the kingdom, willingly arranging activities that would inevitably dirty their hands, and making the children from the high ranking pure noble families do so.

He smiled. Things like this reminded him of his old life. Not the bad part, just the times when he would play outside without much worry, though those times too were stained with unwanted trouble.

Not long after, Alaric returned, dressed in clean clothes.

Aristia gestured to Adeline, who came forward with a bundle of cloth in her hands.

"I got these made for all of you." Aristia explained as Adeline distributed the cloth to each of them.

"It’s an apron. To prevent the clay or paint from staining your clothes."

The children each had one in their hands. They raised it up, examining the cloth. It looked a bit similar the type worn by the maids, except that these ones weren’t sewn on the dress.

"Can we wear this?" Ivan asked. He looked embarrassed. Wasn’t this female clothing?

"Of course. That is for males. There is a difference between that and those given to the girls." Aristia gestured with her hands, "Those held by the girls are fancy."

The clothes were made with high quality cotton. But the male aprons were plain, while the females... well, Aristia had made it classy.

Serina giggled, tracing the lace at the edges of the apron. "It’s fitting."

They all put on the aprons and got to molding with the clay, trying to sculpt different objects. Some turning out close to what wanted to be made and others... Well, couldn’t really be known what it was unless asked.

The children spent the rest of the day in the Grand Duke’s Mansion and only returned to their various homes sometime before the sun set.

Wade now had another favorite day.
