Chapter 109: The Beginning of the Alliance
Bang—
At the edge of a cliff on the eastern shore of the Land of Waves, a pale, wrinkled hand suddenly reached up from the rocks below. It clawed into the earth, fingers digging deep and pressing five clear imprints into the soil.
Gasping for breath, Ryosuke hauled himself over the edge of the cliff. He'd climbed the whole way up with nothing but his bare hands, finally arriving on the island in a thoroughly disheveled state.
Crossing the sea wasn't easy—even for someone with Ryosuke's physical condition, it was exhausting. The long exposure to cold water had left his limbs stiff, and the blood flow to his heart sluggish. A wave of dizziness still clung to him.
His skin was wrinkled and pale, like that of a newborn, every inch soaked through. After scanning the area and confirming it was clear, Ryosuke collapsed flat onto the ground, taking a much-needed rest.
The local civilians had long since been relocated to the Land of Fire. That had been Ryosuke's promise to them—safe passage and a new home. And Ryosuke was a man who honored his word.
Now, the only people left on the island—besides the incoming alliance representatives—belonged to the Seagull Shipping Chamber of Commerce.
After the various delegations arrived, they were divided into sectors. Konoha had taken the eastern portion of the island, and the one overseeing surveillance in that direction was none other than Hyuga, responsible for recon in their unit.
That, of course, was how Ryosuke had managed to reach the island from the east without being spotted. He'd been waiting in Sand Village for a signal from Hyuga Hizashi, the agreed-upon cue for him to enter unnoticed.
Lying on the cold ground at the cliff's edge, Ryosuke finally sat up. His mouth still tasted of salt, gritty and unpleasant. His clothes clung wetly to his body, and there was an odd taste lingering in his throat. Disgusting.
But discomfort wasn't important right now.
Suppressing his nausea, he forced himself to his feet and headed for the dense forest near the cliff's edge. As he walked, he activated his Byakugan, scanning the terrain and surveying the current situation across the island.
No Hyuga clan members had been sent to support him. The circumstances in the Land of Waves had grown too serious for reinforcements.
Each of the nations invited to the alliance summit had sent their own delegations—and every one of them had encountered trouble. Konoha, the Sand Village from the Land of Wind, and even the small Land of Bears had all suffered ambushes.
The worst hit was Sand Village. One of their senior jōnin had been killed.
Konoha's attackers wore headbands bearing the Sand Village insignia. Other countries were attacked by shinobi wearing Konoha forehead protectors.
It was a setup—and Ryosuke had already expected as much.
Fortunately, the delegation leaders weren't idiots. Rather than retreat in a panic, they chose to press on and made it to the island.
The message Ryosuke had received from Hyuga Hizashi outlined everything that had happened after their arrival.
At first, there had been open suspicion and even brief confrontations. After all, the headbands pointed toward each other's villages. But once the delegations took a closer look at the enemy corpses, they began to realize the truth.
Some of the dead were recognized—not active shinobi, but missing-nin. Traitors.
For example, Konoha's group had encountered a jōnin named Ikeda, supposedly from Sand Village. In reality, this man had defected long ago, back after the Third Great Ninja War. He'd been imprisoned for leaking village secrets but had later escaped, becoming a rogue ninja.
Of course, such information wasn't public. Konoha had no way of knowing he was no longer loyal to Sand.
The same pattern emerged with other attackers—rebels from different villages, wearing misleading headbands. Most were only chunin-level, though a few had once held high ranks.
In Konoha, jōnin who defected were rare—and terrifying. Their strength alone made them dangerous enemies.
But what troubled Ryosuke most were the few attackers who weren't missing-nin. These individuals were still officially affiliated with their villages.
In other words—they were spies.
No wonder the alliance's formation had been leaked so quickly. Whoever was working behind the scenes had activated sleeper agents that had been planted years ago.
As Ryosuke shook off the last of his nausea, his thoughts grew sharper. His Byakugan scanned the terrain, and his mind raced.
This was a blatant attempt at sabotage—a textbook case of sowing discord.
From the outside, it was easy to see: this was a crude plan, meant to fracture trust among the alliance members before the talks could begin.
But from the inside? From the perspective of the various village representatives?
It wasn't so clear. Some would fail to see the setup. Others would see it and choose not to believe. And no one was willing to gamble their trust on another village's word.
Crude as it was, the strategy worked. freewebnøvel_com
Now, the island's forces had splintered into four separate camps. The central fortress still housed the remnants of Gato's influence, while everyone else kept to their own sectors, watching each other with suspicion as they waited for the official meeting to begin.
The Hyuga clan continued their reconnaissance in the east, but they'd been instructed to ignore Ryosuke if they saw him.
That allowed him to walk openly through the forest, making his way toward Konoha's camp. Along the way, he found a concealed tree hollow, setting up a temporary base that would give him an excellent view of the surrounding terrain.
He needed to think. He needed to observe.
Hidden Mist. Hidden Cloud. Hidden Stone. Even the Akatsuki...
Leaning back against the tree trunk, Ryosuke popped a few soldier pills into his mouth to replenish his energy. As the bitter taste settled on his tongue, he began to sort through the possibilities.
The enemy could be one of them—or all of them.
Because if this alliance succeeded, the balance of power in the ninja world would shift dramatically. Those who weren't invited—or chose not to participate—would find themselves at a disadvantage.
If the Akatsuki were involved, their motives were likely different. Black Zetsu, in particular, would prefer a chaotic world. The more fractured the villages became, the easier it would be to snatch the tailed beasts and carry out his master's plan.
To understand your enemy, you had to think like them.
With his Byakugan active, Ryosuke watched the island in silence, eyes dull from fatigue but mind spinning rapidly. His thoughts were entirely consumed by the unfolding situation. Even the expressions on his face fell away—he had no energy left to control them.
All the factions who feared this alliance couldn't afford to attack directly. A head-on confrontation would only drive the villages closer together.
They wanted chaos, not clarity. They wanted to fracture the alliance from within, spark mistrust, and derail negotiations without leaving any trace of their involvement.
A direct attack on the delegates would backfire. Nobles, neutral countries, and special envoys from the Land of Iron and the Hot Spring Country were also present. Eliminating everyone was impossible.
And if just one person escaped, the truth would spread like wildfire.
Hatred would only strengthen the alliance's resolve.
So... how do you dismantle an alliance from the inside—without ever showing your hand?
Ryosuke narrowed his eyes, the gears in his head turning faster and faster.
Whoever was behind this was playing a long game. And now, the real battle was about to begin.
