Chapter 39: A Second Wish

"Are you sure that this is what you want?" the Elven King asked.

He looked at the small dragon before him, wondering what was currently going through his mind. The King did his best to keep a straight face; however, he was simply unable to, given the wish.

The Elven King sat on his throne, his fingers tapping against the right armrest as he suddenly snapped his fingers, calling over his assistant.

"Take care of what he asked and capture as many as possible. It seems like he will need a very large number of them," the Elven King whispered.

The assistant left right away as he called over all of the guards he could contact.

"While we prepare your reward, was there anything else that you wanted? Because, truth be told, the wish you asked for is quite underwhelming. Since you have saved my son, I will give you the opportunity to ask for something else."

This time, Kai knew exactly what he wished for. However, he didn’t know exactly what was needed.

’Isla, what do I need to upgrade my Monster Core to the Gold Rank?’

Isla, who was hiding inside his core, replied, ’It’s not an item that he will be able to give you. What you need will have to be obtained by your own power. However, you should ask for access to the Trial of Monsters. That’s where you will find what you need. Luckily for you, it’s located inside the Elven Territory.’

Kai raised his head, his eyes filled with anticipation. "I would like to gain access to the Trial of Monsters. That would be my second wish."

Murmurs immediately echoed within the throne room after the elven translator spoke Kai’s words.

"The Trial of Monsters... wasn’t it closed off years ago because of the Order?"

"Who does he think he is... why is he asking our king to betray the Order?"

"Is he insane?"

The elven nobles were all clearly expecting their king to reject this wish. However, the king was still dead silent, pensive, as he rubbed his chin with his eyes closed.

A few seconds passed before he sighed.

"Hm... that request is a little harder to accept. You should have asked for that one first; it would have made things a lot easier." The King closed his eyes once more, clearly in a state of hesitation. "Ah... I can’t help you with the trial; that would put my people at great risk."

Kai clicked his tongue, but he didn’t mind such an answer because it did not change anything. It would have simply made things easier for him.

"However, I can clearly see that no matter what I say, you will try to find this trial and take part in it." The King softly smiled. "I can understand why. After all, it’s the key to power for all monsters. Well, instead of giving you access, I will give you a hint on where you can find this trial. Is that fine with you, or do you want to wish for something else?"

Kai shrugged with his small draconic body. Having an idea of where this trial was now situated was definitely a good thing since Isla seemed to be completely in the dark about its location.

"Then, here is my hint. Make sure to listen carefully." The King took a small pause before opening his mouth once more. "It’s located in the heart of the Elven Territory."

Isla began laughing instantly. ’He calls that a hint? He basically just gave us the pinpoint location. It’s the World Tree—the Trial of Monsters is located inside it.’

As the King noticed that a lot of people in the stands began to whisper and exchange messages between themselves, he knew that something had to be done since his people were clearly angry about what had just transpired.

"Silence."

He stood up calmly, exuding his power discreetly within the throne room, his authority expanding.

"While I have a hint on the location, in no shape or form will any elf help this dragon in the future. We will keep guarding the trial just like we have done for the past hundreds of years."

Isla was fuming at those words. She couldn’t believe that the Trial of Monsters had been banished from being used. The Order truly had guts. frёewebnoѵel.ƈo๓

The Trial of Monsters was basically a way for the monsters to prove themselves and allow them to evolve further. Without it, it would be impossible for monsters to ever evolve past their evolution limit. For Kai, it was the Silver Rank since he began with a Bronze Ranked Core. However, it can be different for other monsters depending on their starting point. Still, one thing was sure: without this trial, all monsters would sooner or later hit a cap, making it impossible for them to rival humanoid creatures.

’Just what the hell did Varkul even do for the humans to try their very best to render the monsters as weak as possible?’ Isla thought, as even she had no answer for that. ’It seems his reign truly scared them.’

"Did everyone understand what I just said?" the King asked as he made sure to look into Kai’s eyes. "Even if you know of the location, you should know that no one will let you inside and try to help you. They will follow their original orders, which is to capture or kill anyone who tries to take part in the Trial of Monsters."

Kai nodded at those words, not in the least worried about infiltrating the World Tree with his skills. It would be extremely easy for someone like him and his current skills. No one would even know that he had entered.

"Anyway, while we prepare everything for your first wish, please follow one of the guards. He will escort you to your personal room."

As Kai did so, a man clothed fully in black was still watching the small dragon with caution.

’A Fairy and a Nocturne Dragon... what an uncommon duo. Why did the Elven Spirit ask for help from the fairy? Were his memories modified?’ the man thought, as he was the only being apart from Kai and Isla who managed to stay awake against the power of the Elven Spirit King.
