Chapter 476: Chapter 473 Collaboration and Division of Labor Inside the Factory

Birmingham Industrial Area—or it could just as well have been a normal residential district.

Scattered around were factories of all sizes.

As outsiders who had come from London, the team leader took a quarter of an hour to find their destination within this labyrinth.

This was a factory for processing metal parts.

Its size and scale were similar to the medium and small factories Ronald had visited in the past.

Tall enough bricks were stacked to form walls, segregating the inside from the outside into utterly different worlds.

Even now, in the dim and desolate streets,

the firelight and voices could still be seen and heard coming from within the factory.

It seemed like Mr. Matthew Bolton still wanted his factory to operate around the clock, the workers with good resistance to fatigue toiled in such conditions.

Facing the adequately ’bustling’ factory,

someone in the team immediately posed a question:

"Are they still working? Should we just go in like this?"

"What’s there to be afraid of, the blueprints won’t be in the factory, there won’t be many people over in the office building."

The team leader did not care about this at all, his tone full of confidence.

"We’ve done this kind of job before, haven’t we? Why is everyone so timid tonight? Move faster, finish this job, and we can head back to London for a good time!"

As if to echo the leader’s words,

a member of the team voluntarily walked up to the boundary wall and then set down the bag he was carrying. He quickly took out its contents, unfolded in a moment, and two ladders were propped against the factory’s wall.

"Boss, the lighting over this wall seems quite dim."

"Shall we go in from here?"

Before anyone could interject or offer an opinion, the leader began issuing orders as if herding ducks onto a perch:

"Alright, Old Ai and Consta, you go up first, be careful setting up the ladder, I’ll follow with Bloven, and Carl, you stay here..."

He gave his orders rapidly and efficiently, arranging their sequence of movement, and the team swiftly sprang into action under his command. They were all experienced in more than one ’deal’ and naturally did not want any troubles at this time.

Moving silently along with the team, Ronald also climbed over the wall and slipped into the factory. Apart from the man watching the ladders and those responsible for lookout on both sides, there were only five people actually ’getting their hands dirty’, all of them nimble figures.

As for Ronald...

He was fortunate enough to have joined the team executing the theft.

And thanks to his persistent physical training during this period, his strength was not so feeble as it was when he entered Daedalus’ Book’s maze; at least he was on par with a normal healthy adult.

"These Birmingham factories are no good."

"I’ve worked in a few factories in London, all fancier than this!"

"You can work in a factory, yet you choose to do this sort of thing?"

"It’s more liberating this way."

"Give it a rest, the guy got caught with sticky fingers in someone else’s factory and took off!"

"Don’t spill the beans, you old geezer!"

"..."

Still trailing behind the group, Ronald listened to the whispered conversation among the few guys ahead. While marveling at the ’high’ professional standards of this group of thieves, his gaze also rapidly surveyed the surroundings of the factory.

First and foremost, the impression was of utter blackness.

In an era before electric lights, let alone gas lamps, were used, the factories at night were pitch-black on the outside, save for the rooms that were illuminated. Even those carrying oil lamps could only see a very short distance.

In such conditions, with enough caution, a person intent on deception could easily slip past most investigations by hiding in the darkness.

It was under such feeble light that Ronald silently noted the general shape of the factory.

Beyond the factory’s main body which occupied the vast majority of the space,

there were two three-story buildings within the compound walls. One of them was bright with lights even at night, clearly used by important individuals in the factory as an office building; the other was quietly hiding in the darkness, probably related to the workers.

The group made its way slowly, sticking close to the corners of the surrounding walls.

After they got close to the two buildings, the fellow following behind the leader asked:

"Boss, what do we do...?"

"Split up. Bloven, Kate, and I will head over to the one in the dark, Ronald and Cones will go to the office building to see if they can find anything. We’ll use the call of a nightingale as a signal—if one group gets lucky, they’ll call out twice from outside."

Just in front of Ronald, Cones, who had been joking just moments before, suddenly turned pale.

His voice trembled slightly as he said:

"Boss, Ronald and I are both young, this..."

The leader cut him off directly:

"It’s because you two are young that I’m sending you over there."

"The older ones among us going to this office building are more likely to be spotted, of course, we need you young and strong ones to handle things. Don’t worry, you two won’t be taking risks for nothing. Once the job is done, I’ll personally pay each of you an additional twenty percent in compensation!"

Hearing the leader’s words, the worry did not fade from Cones’ face:

"Boss, I..."

"We’re fine, let’s leave it at that." Just then, Ronald interjected, cutting off Cones with a serious tone, "We’ve come this far, let’s hurry up and get started. If anything unexpected happens and even one of us gets caught, it would be bad news for everyone."

The leader’s eyes darkened instantly.

He heard the threat in Ronald’s words, and he had to admit that it was indeed effective. So, forcing a polite smile, he nodded at Ronald and Cones and said:

"Ronald is right, everyone move quickly."

"..."

As soon as he said this, the leader, along with the other two, immediately headed towards the building shrouded in darkness. Ronald, who stayed behind, patted Cones on the shoulder and dragged him toward the office building as well.

The young thief, pulled by Ronald, finally snapped back to reality after a considerable distance had been covered.

"Ronald, how could you agree to something like this!"

"One look at this office building and you know there are quite a few people guarding it. If we were to be caught, we might be killed on the spot, and I have no wish to die in a backwater city like Birmingham."

Looking helplessly at his companion who was unaware that Birmingham was the second-largest city in Britain, Ronald then lowered his voice and said:

"Cones, just relax."

"All of us here know too much about each other; if anyone is caught, it’s curtains for all of us. This building might be well-lit, but from the windows, you can tell there aren’t many people."

"As long as we are careful not to alert these fellows, we might even be safer than the others!"

Cones, hoodwinked by Ronald’s words freeweɓnovel-cøm

and having paid no attention to the office building situation, was immediately taken aback.

Half-convinced, he nodded his head and let Ronald lead him to the back of the office building, ready to enter the premises.
