Mystic Overlord: Reading Gives Strength-Chapter 474 - 471: The Incident at the Castle
Chapter 474: Chapter 471: The Incident at the Castle
In the deep of the night, the brightly lit White Bank Castle stood quietly atop the Wis River.
On the castle’s surrounding walls, Casters arranged by Spring City officials for protection could be seen every few meters. In the suburbs outside the castle, an equally elite force lay in ambush, ready to deal with any unexpected events that might arise.
The help of the adept church personnel was also on hand.
Tonight, to conquer White Bank Castle would be as hard as ascending to heaven. Even if someone actually assembled a powerful army to attack it, the ’guests’ participating in the gathering would use their powerful Spells to tell the attackers how foolish their choice was!
Yet it was this very White Bank Castle
that was at this moment undergoing incredible changes.
From the upstream of the Wis River, a stream of Magic flowed quietly with the water. Naturally, the nearby investigators noticed this situation and, skilled in their work, immediately began their task, preparing to intercept the unidentified Magic outside of Spring City.
This was not the first time the investigators had carried out such a task.
However, as they adeptly unfurled their Spells, a fierce and malevolent Magic suddenly exploded from the outlying White Bank Castle, instantly combining with the Magic in the water.
The frequencies of the two Magic sources were nearly identical; upon activation, they immediately formed a unified magical foundation, which then enveloped the entire White Bank Castle.
Several investigators responsible for handling the flow of the river witnessed this scene.
One of the younger ones stared out at the suburbs, his voice trembling with the exaggerated changes:
"This... this is..."
"Relax, that over there is where some of the country’s, even the world’s, most excellent Casters are gathered. Though not easy to deal with, it depends on who is confronting it," said an older investigator, comforting the younger one.
Panic was absent from his mature and seasoned face.
"Who knows if that’s just a feint, meant to throw us into chaos? We should still follow our procedures, and make sure that none of this water flows into the city areas," he suggested.
Just then, one of the more rearward investigators shouted:
"There’s a carriage coming over there!"
"A carriage? From White Bank Castle?"
"Tilda, take your team and check on the situation!"
"..."
Looking in the direction of the investigators’ discussion, a carriage was driving towards them from the direction of the suburbs. Hearing the order, the investigators dealing with the water issue immediately sent people to investigate.
"Hold on, stop for a moment!"
"What’s happening here?"
The carriage slowed in response, and the driver leaned out to reply:
"Someone got injured in the castle, we urgently need to get back to the city for Healing."
"We’re from the Book Research Club!"
Hearing that it was a carriage from the Book Research Club, the leading investigator’s tone immediately softened, not as severe as the previous questioning:
"How is the injured person, can we check on them?"
The driver granted the investigator the most basic respect:
"Conditions are not good; the faster, the better."
With the driver’s consent, the speaking investigator boarded the carriage alone and glanced inside.
In the small carriage, there was only an old man with white hair and beard and a Caster taking care of him. Together with the driver, the team of three showed no abnormalities.
Nodding and stepping out of the carriage, the investigator casually asked:
"Didn’t you just leave from the castle? Do you know what’s happening with all this commotion?"
"What’s happening..."
Caught off guard by the investigator’s casual question, the scholar, who was still casting a Spell to maintain the old man, shifted his focus slightly, activating a Spell to enhance his senses.
Instantly, the shape of White Bank Castle in the Wis River came into view.
But the caster from the Book Research Club opened his mouth as if to say something, yet seemed as if he was being choked, unable to make any sound at all.
Gulp—
The Caster forcefully swallowed, then suddenly shouted with certainty:
"No, this Magic Fluctuation is not right!"
"This is the Magic Fluctuation of the original trials beginning; it’s definitely not something you’d find at a normal Spell exchange meeting!"
"..."
As he spoke, silence suddenly fell around the carriage.
The investigators naturally knew how the various official institutions of Spring City operated and that the folks from the Book Research Club dealt specifically with the original tomes.
A judgment from such a research-oriented Caster...
Rarely would there be a mistake.
After two breaths passed, an investigator a little further from the carriage was the first to react, confirming in a tone tinged with disbelief:
"Sir...are you certain about this...?"
"Of course, I’m certain!" The Caster in the carriage declared emphatically, "I was just with Professor Hughes yesterday for the experiment to activate the original tome; how could I mistake it?"
Another investigator then spoke up:
"Hughes... That’s the scholar Hughes who lives on White Manor Avenue?"
The Caster from the Book Research Club grew even more anxious:
"Which other Professor Hughes from our Book Research Club could be leading the research?"
"With things as they are, do you think I would joke about this with you all...this...!"
Seeing the person from the Book Research Club so anxious they could hardly speak clearly,
an elite investigator who was leading the work stepped forward.
"Sir, don’t you still need to get the old man Healing?"
"If you don’t mind, why don’t our men join you back in the city? It’s certainly more convenient by carriage than on foot."
Immediately someone interjected:
"Mr. Miller, but our task is..."
"Tasks must be prioritized," the elite investigator interjected sharply, "Following rules rigidly might work in other industries, but for our work, it’s a death wish. Something this serious might indicate the perpetrator is prepared, and since we’ve discovered it, we should head back immediately to inform the others."
After speaking, the elite investigator then cast his gaze upon the Wis River:
"Tilda, you go back with this gentleman from the Book Research Club. I’ll handle the cleanup here—there won’t be any issues."
"..."
After this resolute command and reassurances, nobody on the investigator’s side raised any further objections.
The named individual boarded the carriage and returned to Spring City with the Book Research Club representative. The others continued with the task of clearing the Magic they held, and the scene quickly returned to an orderly state.
Yet while cleaning the river’s Magic,
The elite investigator in charge of coordinating the effort occasionally glanced towards White Bank Castle. A meeting that required numerous resources and connections to various forces to arrange,
It seems after just one day of proceedings,
It was facing the prospect of an abrupt suspension.
