Chapter 1808: The Call of the Forest

Outside the front of the White Rose base, the chaos had reached a fever pitch. The rest of the pack was still locked in a desperate struggle against the swarming Gluttons. Exhaustion was beginning to set in, but they had managed to survive by falling into a rhythmic synergy, covering each other’s blind spots and rotating their defense.

The ones making the most significant impact on the front lines were Innu and Haylock. They were fighting as a singular, terrifying unit, a symbiotic dance of strings and steel.

Innu, having surrendered his body to Haylock’s control, was using the opportunity to study his own potential. While the invisible strings jerked his limbs into positions he never would have thought of, Innu was focusing all of his internal concentration on drawing out more strength. He began experimenting with his Qi, channeling the energy into the various weapons integrated into his body. By timing his Qi bursts at the exact moment of impact, he was slicing through even the most resilient Gluttons with frightening ease.

The combination of Haylock’s precision and Innu’s raw power turned him into an unstoppable force, a whirlwind of blades cutting a path through the carnage.

‘Is this something that I can eventually do myself?’ Innu wondered as he watched his own hands move with a grace that wasn’t his own. ‘Or can I only achieve this because he’s puppeteering me with those strings?’

He felt a muscle twitch in his leg as Haylock adjusted his stance. ‘No... I can feel it. He’s controlling the frame, and some of the aerial maneuvers he’s pulling off would be physically impossible for me to replicate. But not everything. Most of the grounded movements, the way he shifts his weight and stabilizes his footing, that’s something I could do.’

As he analyzed the fight, Innu realized that his primary bottleneck wasn’t just skill, it was stamina. Moving at this sustained speed with this level of surgical precision was possible, but he wondered how long his heart and lungs could keep up the pace before failing. Still, the experience was opening a new world for him. He had believed he had hit his absolute limit, but it was clear now that the ceiling was much higher than he had imagined.

“This is endless!” Austin shouted over the snarls of the werewolves. He pounded a fist into his palm, his muscles bulging. “Should we fall back? Or maybe we should head inside and check to see if the others are okay or if they need help!”

Just as a Glutton Werewolf leapt through the air, claws extended toward Austin’s throat, a shadow descended from the sky. Kai landed with a heavy thud, his strike connecting perfectly with the Glutton’s head and sending the beast crashing into the dirt several yards away.

“That might have been a nice offer a few moments ago, but we’re alright,” Kai said, straightening his jacket as if he hadn’t just plummeted from a rooftop.

Austin turned his head and saw Gary entering the fray as well. The Alpha was moving with a savage efficiency, using his fists and legs to deliver bone-shattering blows. However, something was off. He wasn’t fighting with his usual tactical focus; instead, his movements were jagged and heavy. It looked like someone fighting out of pure, bottled frustration, someone forcing themselves to act because there was no other choice.

“Wait, you have Midwak, and he seems fine!” Marie called out, her eyes widening as she saw the former Glutton standing with the group. “Then shouldn’t we just head out of here? At the rate they’re coming, I think every Glutton in the entire city is going to converge on this point. We should regroup and get out while we still can.”

“Although that’s not a bad choice, there’s been a change of plan,” Kai stated, his voice turning cold. “If all of the Gluttons are coming here, it actually makes the situation easier to deal with. We can finish them all at once.”

Gary didn’t say a word. He simply reached out and summoned the massive Warhammer into his hands. The weapon appeared in a flash of light, and as he gripped the handle, the air around him seemed to grow heavy. With the night sky fully out, his system was flooded with energy. He felt like he could fight for an eternity.

However, just as Gary raised the hammer to crush the skull of the nearest Glutton, the beast did something unexpected. It jumped back.

It wasn’t just that one werewolf, either. Every single Glutton engaged in combat across the courtyard, beasts that had been fighting with mindless, suicidal aggression only seconds ago, suddenly disengaged. They all leapt backward, creating a wide circle around the pack.

“What is going on?” Innu asked, his body finally still as the strings went slack.

“I have no idea,” Midwak replied, his brow furrowed. He could sense the shift in the air more than anyone.

The Gluttons weren’t looking at the pack anymore. They were looking up at the sky, their ears twitching in unison as if they were catching a frequency that the humans couldn’t hear. Then, as if following a silent command, they all turned as one and started to sprint away. They ignored the pack entirely, running back into the dark forest and away from the base.

“Luzen, follow them!” Kai commanded. “Track them down, but don’t engage. Just see where they’re heading.”

Luzen nodded, his form blurring as he moved to stay on their trail. He would be their eyes in the dark for now.

“What should we do?” Marie asked, looking toward the dark treeline. “Should we follow the Gluttons as well?”

“I think so,” Kai suggested, his eyes narrowed. “We need to find out where they’re going before they decide to head back toward Slough. Their reactions... they’re incredibly strange. And who knows? This might lead us straight to Unzoku.”

At the mention of that name, a flicker of pure fury ignited in Gary’s eyes. He tightened his grip on the Warhammer, the metal humming with his intent. He was ready to end this.
