Chapter 79: Sacred Grounds (Bonus)

Not long after Joe had slipped out through the back door, there was a sudden, violent crash.

BOOM.

A massive fist punched straight through Gabriel’s front door, splintering a hole through it.

Gabriel and his wife screamed. She immediately pulled their daughter behind her, shielding the girl with her body as they backed toward the far corner of the living room.

The large fist withdrew slightly, and through the hole it had created, his fingers reached in, found the lock, twisted it open, and shoved the door wide.

Standing in the doorway was Garrick Harrow "The Bull"

The was enormous broad-shouldered gang leader that had been chasing Joe all night.

His arms were like tree trunks and a frame so massive it barely fit through the doorframe. Garrick tried to step through, but his body was simply too large for the narrow entryway.

So he forced his way in.

The doorframe groaned, then cracked and splintered under the force of Garrick’s sheer bulk. He slammed through it as if it were made of paper.

The frame collapsed around him, sending chunks of wood scattering across the floor as he stepped fully into the house.

Gabriel’s voice was so shaky and desperate when he said, "P-please... spare them. You can take anything you want. Just... just don’t hurt my family."

Garrick didn’t even glance at him.

Instead, he turned back toward the doorway, where a woman stepped in behind him. She was lean, dressed in dark leather pants and a fitted jacket that marked her as part of the gang.

But what stood out most was the glowing green magic circle hovering in her right palm.

In her left hand, she held a single bullet between her fingers, channeling green energy through it.

This was Clora, a caster affiliated with the Jackals Gang. The bullet she held was the same one Hitman X had used to kill one of Garrick’s men.

The gang leader then said in a rough, gravelly voice. Well? Do you see anything?"

Clora nodded slowly, her eyes glowing with the same green hue as the magic circle. In her vision, and hers alone, she could see green glowing footprints trailing across the floor of the house.

The locator spell was working.

She was using the bullet as the source, tracing the residual energy left behind by the man who had fired it.

She pointed toward the back of the house. "He went that way."

Without a word, Garrick turned and proceeded forward, as his massive frame slammed through the next doorframe as easily as the first.

Behind him, several gang members filed in, following his lead.

Gabriel and his wife were still frozen, with tears streaming down both their faces as they clutched their daughter tightly.

——

Joe emerged from another narrow alley and found himself standing before a wide road that led to the grounds of a fine looking establishment.

It was the tallest building in the vicinity, and Its exterior was a patchwork of iron plating, steel beams, and reinforced glass, giving it a rough, industrial aesthetic.

A large sign hung above the entrance in bold letters: THE LUCKY HAND CASINO

Joe turned his head left, then right, scanning the streets for any sign of danger. Passersby were beginning to fill the streets, and merchants opened their shops.

He pulled the cap lower over his eyes and walked briskly toward the building, keeping his head down.

-

Not long after, Garrick’s men approached the casino en masse.

They moved quickly, weapons at the ready. Some carried blades, while others let magic crackle in their palms. They were a rough-looking bunch, every one of them. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎

Garrick walked behind them and beside him, was Clora who still held up her magic circle and the glowing bullet.

"The trail leads to that building," she said, pointing ahead.

Garrick stopped and stared at the structure. His brow furrowed as he tried to remember when it was, but he was certain he had been here before.

Then his eyes widened in sudden recognition.

"Wait!" he shouted, raising one hand forward.

But it was too late. The first few men had already stepped onto the grounds of the establishment.

Right in that moment, three heads separated from their bodies in an instant and blood sprayed into the air in arcs as the corpses crumpled to the ground, their heads rolling across into the road.

Standing directly at the entrance of the casino was a woman.

She was tall and striking, dressed in a tight, dark skirt that clung to her curves and a low-cut blouse that left the cleavage of her breasts on full display.

Her long black hair was tied back loosely, and her lips wore a red lipstick. In her right hand, she held a katana, which she calmly sheathed back into its scabbard.

She had no expression on her face as she simply just watched for more approach.

Nearby passersby who had witnessed the sudden carnage screamed and scattered in all directions, fleeing the scene in terror.

At the top of the casino, a man stood on a balcony overlooking the floor below. His white hair flowed freely, and he wore a three-piece suit with his arms crossed as he stared down at the scene beneath him with glowing blue eyes.

A terrifying cold voice rang out from above, enough that they could hear him.

"If any of you take one more step forward, it will be your last."

He turned and disappeared back into the building without another word.

The saber-class woman remained standing at the entrance, with her hand resting casually on the hilt of her sheathed blade.

She watched the remaining gang members with cold, unblinking eyes, and none of them dared move.

Garrick who was end of the road gritted his teeth in frustration, with his fists were clenched so tightly.

Clora’s face had gone pale. Her hands trembled as she stared at the headless corpses lying in pools of blood.

"What... what just happened?" she stammered.

"They just stepped into sacred ground," Garrick said. "This place belongs to the League of Assassins."

Clora’s eyes widened in horror. "The... the League?"

Garrick added;

"That bastard’s inside, and until he leaves there, we can’t touch him."
