Chapter 46 -46 Wanyu
“Aside from the Tower, Pavilion, Two Halls, and Twelve Courtyards, our sect consists of myriad schools founded by countless disciples. For example, the Flowing Fire Vein specializes in fire magic and the Thousand Illusion School is devoted entirely to the study of illusions. That’s why our sect is known as the Wanyu Sect, symbolizing the convergence of thousands of different paths.”
As Xiang Feifei painstakingly explained all this, looking out at the many buildings of the Wanyu Sect sprawled beneath them, Wang Zijia went from baffled to enlightened and then to curious once more.
Wanyu Sect was not at all what he had imagined from what he had read in his previous life. The entire sect was like a massive city, reminiscent of a university town.
Besides the majestic Scripture Pavilion, there were other important components such as the Law Hall which oversaw the entire sect, the Demon Suppressing Tower which handled disciple affairs, and the Elders’ Hall, which didn’t interfere much with the affairs.
The remaining sectors, including Pill, Artifact, Array, Talisman, and the twelve courtyards, were akin to the government institutions in a city. The disciples set up various schools and sects within this system, each one being independent yet part of a larger whole.
The traditional divisions between Outer and Inner Sect were non-existent; disciples of all sorts were mixed together.
Simply put, the Wanyu Sect was like a modern city, with the Twelve Courtyards being state-owned enterprises, and the rest of the schools and sects equivalent to private enterprises.
Roles such as those of Miscellaneous Disciples, Outer Sect Disciples, Inner Sect Disciples, etc. were akin to qualifications or certificates. People with different qualifications might live or work in the same building complex of a school or sect, engaged in different tasks.
These ‘enterprises’ were more like institutes or colleges!
In short, the Wanyu Sect was completely different from what Wang Zijia had imagined a cultivation sect to be; one could even say that they were worlds apart.
The buildings beneath them represented the various schools and sects. At the heart of each building complex was an emblematic structure that symbolized the core of that particular school or sect.
As these structures were built bit by bit by the disciples themselves, their designs varied greatly to distinguish between different schools.
There were traditional towers, buildings in the shape of flying birds, modern-style stone buildings, and even treehouses that were close to nature.
Wang Zijia even spotted buildings bearing a distinct Western fantasy aesthetic, including castles, temples, and mage towers.
At a glance, these emblematic structures were fascinating in their diversity. The various schools and sects had indeed spared no effort to make their structures unique!
As they ascended the clouds, not just Wang Zijia and Bai Qian, but the other girls as well, continued to gaze curiously at the building complexes below.
Even Xiang Feifei, although clearly knowledgeable about the sect, was taking in the sight of the buildings with apparent curiosity as it was her first time visiting the sect.
Only Xiang Liang remained calm and collected, steering their cloud towards one among the many building complexes at the perimeter, a complex situated on a not-so-small hill.
Suddenly, the sky around them was filled with other clouds, Paper Kites, and various other flying objects.
Attire bearing the classical Xianxia style, modern ideological consciousness.
A peculiar, novel cultivation world unfolded before Wang Zijia, offering a feast for his eyes.
Soon, they arrived at a large, slightly elevated hill, heading towards a large square located there.
This was the Administrative Office, the headquarters where the sect handled its external affairs. It was responsible for managing the status of the disciples, such as their induction and promotions. Among the Twelve Courtyards, it held a particularly high status.
“Don’t rush to join a school. Your assignment was set last night. We’re here today just to fulfil some formalities,” Xiang Liang reminded Wang Zijia while looking at the Administrative Office and landing on the square.
Snapping back to reality, Wang Zijia nodded in understanding. After all, the primary reason he had to get engaged was this arrangement.
By now, they had reached the square. At that moment, there were already quite a few people standing there. The crowd was clearly divided into two groups.
One group was dressed uniformly as Miscellaneous Disciples—this was the main crowd.
The other group was dressed diversely—only a few among them wore the standard attire of Miscellaneous Disciples.
In front of each group stood a high platform. On the platform stood a substantial group of people who looked like managers, lounging around and chatting casually in small groups.
They landed between the stage and the disciples, right in front of everyone.
Coaxed by Xiang Liang, Xiang Feifei and Wang Zijia, accompanied by the four maids, headed towards the diverse group.
Xiang Liang, on the other hand, gestured casually and the cloud transformed into a jade-white hairpin that he nonchalantly tucked into his hair. He then ascended the platform and merged into the group of people engaged in discussion.
The assembled disciples watched Wang Zijia’s group, who were personally attended by Xiang Liang, with mixed feelings.
The group in typical menial clothing was filled with envy and jealousy. Meanwhile, the group with varied attire was mostly turning to those familiar with them, seemingly discussing the newcomers’ potential.
As she walked beside Wang Zijia, Xiang Feifei appeared calm, but her hand concealed in her sleeve had turned white from clasping it tightly. She was obviously nervous, but forced herself to stay composed.
On the other hand, Wang Zijia remained emotionless. To him, this was just like a freshman’s first assembly at school. Having already experienced military training, he didn’t feel nervous in the slightest.
It was just that being sent in a luxury car had led to people gawking at him. But that was relatively insignificant!
Perhaps Wang Zijia’s nonchalance helped to settle Xiang Feifei’s nerves a bit.
Walking side by side, they intended to go towards the back of the crowd. Suddenly, a girl slightly older than Xiang Feifei waved enthusiastically from the front, “Feifei, come over here!”
A relieved Xiang Feifei looked at Wang Zijia. This caught him off guard momentarily before he remembered that he was now her fiancé.
Was she seeking his opinion?
Noticing that there weren’t any lines in the crowd, Wang Zijia nodded silently and followed her to the front of the crowd.
Bai Qian took the initiative and beckoned the three maids to follow her towards the back of the crowd, where several other servitors had gathered.
“Why are you here? Didn’t your family say you were going to wait till next year’s Grand Selection, aiming to enter one of the top sects directly?” said the young girl, who was apparently quite familiar with Xiang Feifei.
“This is Zhang Yurou, an outstanding disciple from the Zhang family, a minor family from the outer perimeter of the Sect, just like ours,” Xiang Feifei didn’t immediately reply to the girl’s inquiry, instead introducing her to Wang Zijia first. It was obvious from her behavior that while she was exasperated with her sudden fiance, she was still polite in his presence, giving him due respect.
She had been taught well at the Xiang family: she knew her place and was mindful of the bigger picture.
“And who is this…” Zhang Yurou looked at Wang Zijia curiously as Xiang Feifei spoke. At first glance, he was just another chubby boy, though there were signs of maturity developing in his facial features.
However, overall, he was still a little chubby. He wasn’t ugly, but he could hardly be called handsome either. At best, he was bearable on the eyes.
“My fiancé!” Xiang Feifei responded, her face devoid of any emotion.
