Chapter 50: Third Maid

The Stormcloud Lord had no idea whether the new Warden had already been chosen. He only knew that one of his ancestors had been chosen and would serve as the Warden’s maid, a tale passed down by word of mouth through the generations.

While most maids came from concubines’ daughters or women of low status, serving the Warden ranked among the greatest honors in the realm. Stormcloud lords, no matter how dire their troubles, clung to that hope and worked tirelessly to prove their worth, trusting the new Warden would read of their deeds in the annals of history.

Lady Eleonora’s future, they believed, would blossom through both her service and the Warden’s favor. For that reason, the current Lord told his people their honor, blood, and sweat would live on. Even if he fell today and the dukedom collapsed, their efforts would pave the way for a comeback.

Most common folk barely knew the Warden existed, but their Lord’s conviction—and the chance of their illustrious ancestor’s return—ignited the will to resist. Together with their allies, the Stormcloud forces fought the dragons and their plots. Thanks to their valor, no citizen or hero had yet been dragged into the dragons’ catacombs.

After several days of hard riding, Jett finally crossed into Stormcloud territory, his horses tearing down the roads like champions.

Village after village lay abandoned, half‑sunken in new swamps that had swallowed homes whole.

A few hours in, a palpable gloom pressed on him, as though the continent itself groaned under the chaos. freeweɓnøvel~com

Right then a system prompt flashed before his eyes.

[You have received a new quest.]

[Awaken Eleonora Von Stormcloud to assist you on your quest to pacify dragons and humans.]

Waking her up when her family might be wiped out doesn’t exactly thrill me. But it’s her home—she deserves the chance to help.

Jett pushed back his chair and glanced over his shoulder at Mia and Noctlisa. On cue, the pair stepped in beside him, ready for orders. Across the room, Ewelina and Lulu stared, startled by the sudden movement.

"I need to do something upstairs. Wait for me," Jett said.

"Ah, yes, of course," Ewelina said with a nod. Is it just me, or does he sound a little sad?

Unaware of how worried he sounded, Jett climbed the stairs and waited for his maids to shut the door behind them.

He explained that the system wanted him to awaken Eleonora Von Stormcloud.

"I don’t feel good about it, but the stakes are high and she deserves to help her family," he muttered.

"Precisely as you have said, Master Jett," Mia replied, her tone soft and poised.

"Ain’t like she’s soft in the head," Noctlisa grunted. "And if she is, Master, you’ll rack up points with her, yeah?"

Mia shot her a frosty glare while Jett shook his head.

"Winning a woman’s heart through tragedy isn’t kindness—it’s manipulation," he said.

Mia dipped her head, smile sweet yet chagrined. Noctlisa shrugged—kindness was kindness, and to her, people always looked out for themselves.

Deciding not to argue further, Jett willed Eleonora’s portrait to appear. He had no other idea how to rouse her.

Instead of a canvas, silver light gathered before him and shaped itself into a woman. The glow burst into glittering motes, leaving a pale‑haired maid standing on the floorboards.

Eleonora blinked awake, silver eyes locking on Jett. Pinching the hem of her skirt, she dipped into a deep curtsy.

"Pleased to stand at your service at last, Master," she said, head still bowed.

"It’s great to have you as my third maid, Eleonora," Jett answered. "I’m human too, so I’m curious about you—but that can wait. Your home’s in danger, and we’re riding out. A lot of time has passed, so I’ll bring you up to speed on the way."

Eleonora’s eyes hardened. "Understood, Master."

A few minutes later she stood at the window of Jett’s chamber, searching the horizon as though she could already see her homeland. So many years had passed that she might not recognize a single face, yet she refused to let her family fall.

"Dragon slayers didn’t exist in my prime," she said, summoning a sky‑steel longsword into her hand. "I don’t plan to lose to any hero, dragonslayer, or dragon."

She spun the blade once, then strode to Jett, dropped to one knee, and bowed her head.

"Thank you for granting me the chance to safeguard my kin. Upon my Sky Sword, I swear eternal service to you, Master Jett Talon, and I shall ever cherish your kindness."

"Stand up," Jett said. "I love the suit your house gifted me, and for that alone I’d help. But it’s deeper than a favor. I grew up beneath even commoners, so innocent lives matter to me more than you know. I’ll do everything I can to stop more bloodshed."

Eleonora nodded, then allowed a small smile. "Master chose my family’s suit—that gladdens me. Has Master discovered its traits yet?"

"Traits?" Jett echoed. "It held up against a dragon, though it got ripped to shreds. Your folks sent me plenty of spares, so I’m good there—but traits? What am I missing?"

He glanced over his shoulder. Mia stood with her head bowed, horror flickering in her eyes—she had missed something important.

Jett offered a faint smile. "Chin up, Mia. Everybody slips up. That’s what makes us humans—uh—people, right? Intelligent races?"

Eleonora let out a soft, amused laugh and demurely shielded her smile with her hand.

Having a human Warden gave Eleonora an immediate sense of kinship with him. His humble origins fascinated her, casting him in a new, sympathetic light. That playful back‑and‑forth with Mia convinced her that Master Jett would be an entertaining lord indeed.

If not for the catastrophe threatening her homeland, Eleonora would have relished exploring her Master’s unique abilities and strength.

Jett turned to her. "Right—your maid outfit’s out of date. Mia, let’s get her fitted."

"As you command, Master Jett." Mia bowed.
