Chapter 44: Bonus Chapter Guild offer! The Old Oliver

Annie had begun processing Oliver’s registration schedule, her hands tapping against the keys at lightning speed. Her eyes darted across every piece of information she input, guiding her fingers with precise, almost mechanical accuracy. At this rate, she was far too occupied to entertain any conversation.

Leaving Oliver with a moment of breathing space from her theatrics.

Now, the three of them sat on the waiting seats in the lobby.

Oliver in the middle, while the other two sat closely on either side of him.

"Why did you call me so suddenly? I was in the middle of something," Hera finally spoke, her dissatisfaction evident in her tone.

"Do you really think that’s the important thing right now?" Zack exclaimed. "Boss is interested in goth girls. My respects are high, Sir."

Zack was far more energetic than usual. He seemed improved. No longer the worn-out version of himself from the ruins. His clothes were intact, his posture relaxed, his body bulkier... and he even looked happy.

Oliver smiled at this.

’Reminds me of the good days,’ he thought, rubbing his hands together softly.

But that smile didn’t go unnoticed.

Hera and Zack both caught it—the slight curl of his lips. It felt wrong. Like a function that was never meant to be accessed had suddenly been triggered.

It was strange... unsettling even.

And yet, somehow, it warmed their hearts.

To see the cold, sadistic bastard of a slaver wear such an expression. Even if just for a fleeting moment, felt unreal.

But as quickly as it appeared, it vanished.

Oliver leaned back, his usual indifferent demeanor returning as if it had never left. Then his gaze shifted, settling directly on Hera.

"I want to create a guild. One with twelve members. And I want both of you to be part of it."

His voice was blunt, but there was no mistaking the seriousness behind it.

Hera’s face twisted into confusion. Her gaze dropped to her heels as she shifted slightly, her thoughts spiraling.

A guild?

That wasn’t a small offer—it was a massive one.

Especially for her.

She was the daughter of one of the most powerful guild leaders in the world. Oliver didn’t strike her as someone who desired authority on that level. And even if he did...

How would she explain this to her family?

’No... why would I ever leave my father’s guild for some stranger’s?’ she thought, conflicted.

Oliver studied her expression carefully.

He could read it all.

He knew exactly where her thoughts had gone, her father, her loyalty, the weight of expectation. The fact that she was even considering it instead of rejecting it outright...

That was a good sign.

’She’ll break eventually. And as for her father... I’ll have that under control.’

His gaze shifted to Zack.

Zack looked just as troubled.

"I’m not sure I can..." he began, pausing before finishing the sentence.

Oliver nodded calmly. "I understand. I do not expect your answers immediately. Still... I will be waiting."

With that, he rose from his seat and walked toward the counter, leaving the two of them drowning in their thoughts.

---

Prior to Oliver’s regression.

A young man sat alone on a long metal bench.

He was the only one seated there.

His head hung low, his tattered black hair falling in uneven waves over his face, casting shadows that concealed his expression.

Though others were present, people around his age, not a single one sat near him.

It wasn’t because they knew who he was.

Most of them didn’t.

It was because of how he felt.

Disturbed.

Unstable.

Like someone barely holding onto the last threads of sanity.

No one wanted to sit beside an Awakener who looked like he was about to lose himself.

So they kept their distance.

Watching.

Carefully.

Silently making note of his every movement.

The boy noticed.

Of course he did.

But instead of reacting, he simply smiled faintly to himself.

"How expected," he muttered under his breath.

Madness was not uncommon among Awakeners.

With everything they had seen... everything they had done... it was inevitable.

Some managed to crawl their way back from the edge.

Others...

Fell.

Completely.

He wasn’t going to sugarcoat his situation.

He knew where he stood.

And right now...

He was closer to breaking than ever before.

"Oliver Mori, you are up for your re-evaluation test."

Oliver slowly raised his head.

His gaze met the woman in office attire holding a checkboard in her hands. Her posture was stiff, her expression professional, but her eyes betrayed caution.

He nodded silently and rose to his feet, following behind her.

’After failing the test... being used as a human shield for the Snake Group... and ending up killing Bentley with my own hands...’

His gaze drifted to his hands. 𝐟𝕣𝕖𝐞𝐰𝕖𝚋𝐧𝗼𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝗰𝐨𝐦

Thin.

Scarred.

Trembling ever so slightly.

"The line between an Awakener and a mere realm beast... blurs at some point."

The woman ahead of him flinched.

She turned slightly, clearly startled by his muttering, but quickly composed herself. Even so, she instinctively increased the distance between them.

They continued walking.

Soon, they arrived at a vast corridor.

Wide—over a dozen meters across.

Its white walls gleamed under sterile lighting, while the polished silver marble floor reflected their footsteps with eerie clarity. Multiple testing stations lined the space, each one radiating a cold, clinical authority.

The woman stopped abruptly and turned to face him.

Her expression had changed.

Gone was the neutral professionalism from the lobby.

What remained was something colder.

Sharper.

"The last time you came here, you got an E-rank."

Her voice carried a cutting edge now.

"Now why don’t you be a good dog... and stop dragging your father’s name through the mud?"

***Author’s note***

Yes, we will be going through Oliver’s backstory and probably a few scenes that can mess up the pacing if shown as bonuses.

So if you aren’t interested in his past, which can very much add more tension to the story (I recommend reading). Skip Bonus Chapters.

But if you are interested! Enjoy.
