Chapter 22 - The First Fight

Chapter - 22

Unlike earlier when Iris would play chauffeur for Lucius, it was him in the driver's seat. Iris was sitting on the back seat, glued to her phone.

It has been again a week since their first visit to her company headquarters, and believe it or not, it wasn't an easy week for him. Everything around him was constantly moving as if he was surrounded not by humans, but a bunch of robots, beautiful robots though.

He was one of the few men in the company, and had no idea what it was that he had to do. Also the sight of unknown faces didn't make it easy either.

But slowly and steadily over the course of the week, Lucius was slowly getting used to making schedules and grabbing coffee for Iris. Which was what he did mostly.

"Did you manage today's schedule?" Iris asked, breaking his chain of thoughts.

"I actually did," Lucius replied, "It is at the office."

She sighed, irritated, "How careless can you be? I told you so many times I need it in front of me at the beginning of the day."

"Relax. I have been busy with other work. So I just forgot it in the office. Why are you so mad?" Lucius said, "I will give it to you first thing when we reach."

"Whatever," Iris murmured, turning back to her phone, "But this isn't helping your case."

When they reached the towering office building, Iris got a call.

"I am coming up in five minutes. Is it something important?" Iris answered the phone.

She heard the other person for a while, "Prepare the room," saying so she ended the call.

Then she turned towards Lucius, "I have something important to take care of. So postpone everything until tomorrow," she instructed him and walked away without waiting for him.

"Now all my hard work is down the drain," Lucius mumbled to himself, "Yet I got bashed for no reason."

The elevator dinged, and Iris walked out of it, followed by Lucius. Iris, ignoring everyone, moved straight towards the conference room.

As she looked at the reports in front of her, her fingers tapped the polished surface as she listened to everyone speak one by one.

When the last speaker finished, Iris let out a slow breath, "I want the reports of the market survey along with the diversified consumer base that we are targeting."

"We are entering the consumer market for the first time. It is a good chance for our image makeover. We can afford to be patient, but there shouldn't be any mistakes."

"Dismissed,"

And saying so, Iris was the first one to storm out of the meeting. From the conference room, she went straight to her office and slumped on her chair.

Lucius was also in the room, working on his tablet.

'We should have stuck to making weapons. Selling clothes to kids? That's a nightmare.' Iris sighed

"Another useless meeting?" Lucius asked, not looking up from his tablet.

'Sniff! Sniff!'

"As always," Iris nodded, as she started flipping through the files. The meeting had drained her, but there was still a pile of work to do.

"There are many here who leech off of you, but work for someone else," Lucius told her, "And since you don't show them the consequences of messing with you, they just..." He did not say it any further, but she knew what he meant.

"What could be done in two meetings, you have already spent more than a week. Every day they come up with a new excuse... Your so called aunt..."

"I know all about that... Sniff! I will take care of that... Sniff!"

"You... Sniff! Did you inform everyone about the rescheduling?" Iris asked.

"I am doing it right now," Lucius told her, "Just going to do it after I finish this work," Lucius replied.

"What the hell Lucius? And you were just lecturing me how to get things done," Iris snapped, eyes narrowing, "Can't you do one thing right?"

Her voice was sharp, but she sounded tired.

"What if they show up before you even inform them?" She said as her voice started rising, "What will that make us look like?"

"Sniff! Lucius, it is always easy to point fingers at others," she added, her tone turning cold, "But it is much harder to own your mistakes."

"Now stop wasting time and do it. Now,"

Lucius frowned hearing her. It has been the second time today that she has lashed out at him for no reason at all. His fingers curled up in a fist, and his chest tightened with anger.

He wanted to shout back, but held himself back. She was lashing out, but not just at him... but at everything.

So to not make it worse, without a word, he pulled out his phone and walked away to the side.

Cough! Cough!

Iris bent over, coughing hard as her throat became hoarse. Her nose was blocked and now her head had started to ache.

She was getting worse. She groaned, pressing her fingers into her temple, trying to ease the pain.

"I hate this," she whispered under her breath, barely loud enough to hear. She dug through her purse and pulled out a pill.

"Water," she muttered looking at Lucius.

But Lucius, who was a bit far, was on a call talking to someone and didn't hear her.

Suddenly her patience snapped. Her voice came sharp and edged with frustration, "Can't you fucking hear me? I said, Give me water!"

Lucius's head jerked up this time. He looked at Iris for a while, not saying anything before apologizing to the person on the other side.

"Sam, Sorry something came up. I will call you later," And Lucius ended the call.

Enough was enough. He swiftly moved, grabbed a bottle of water and slammed it onto her desk, hard enough to make her flinch.

"Listen to me you pompous little princess. I work for you, but I am sure as hell not your fucking servant," He leaned in, his voice dropping dangerously low.

"Raise your voice again, and I will snap that neck of yours."

Iris froze in her spot under his gaze. Her breath was caught in her throat. Her lips parted, but no words came out.

For a second, she didn't recognize him. He was totally different.

Then just like that he turned away.

The door burst open as he stormed out, leaving her alone with the silence, with pounding in her head and her chest.

Her gaze turned towards the bottle in front of her, but her hand didn't move to pick it up.

Soon hours passed, and it was already dark outside.

The office was almost empty with only a few people left finishing up their things.

Iris finally stretched, her body was still aching, even more badly than before. It was time to go. She picked up her stuff and stepped out of her cabin.

As she looked around, her eyes were searching for a certain someone. But that person was nowhere in sight.

"Where is that guy?" she asked a lady who was just walking by.

"Uh... You mean Lucius? I haven't seen him for a while, ma'am," The lady answered.

"He is not here?" Iris frowned and gestured for the lady to go.

"What is wrong with him?" she muttered, heading outside.

But just as she got out of the building, there he was.

Leaning against the car like he was posing for a magazine cover. Hands in pockets, eyes on the ground, wind running through his hair.

Seeing him, she stopped in front of him and crossed her arms, "Wow. There you are. I thought maybe the Earth swallowed you up. Pity."

Lucius didn't flinch, "Were you missing me, young miss? That's touching."

"I just needed some air..."

Iris scoffed hearing him, "Right. Because you are the delicate flower here, all bruised and broken."

"So you done throwing your tantrum?" she asked, tilting her head, "Or the baby needs more air?"

Lucius just shrugged, "Forget it. Just get in the damn car," He opened the car door for her, mockingly polite.

Iris stared at the open door, then walked past it and got into the driver's seat instead.

Lucius raised an eyebrow, "You are driving?"

"Yes, I am. And Alone as well," She didn't look at him, "I am sure you can figure out your own ride."

He let out a dry laugh, "Don't flatter yourself, young miss. I was about to walk anyway," He slammed the passenger door.

"Good. Then walk faster," She fired up the engine, "Try not to fall into a ditch, okay?"

And then she was gone.

"Fuck off," Lucius muttered under his breath.

Lucius watched her disappear, "That bitch," with a long, sharp exhale, he flagged down a passing taxi.

"Wellington Hills," he muttered as he got in.

The driver nodded—a tall man with greasy hair, and slightly wrinkled face.

As the taxi got on the road, Lucius leaned back, eyes closing.

Minutes passed and soon sleep crept in and Lucius dozed off.

God knows after how long. But a sudden bump pulled Lucius out of his sleep.

He groaned as he sat up straight and straight away looked out of the window. But what was in front of him shocked him.

They were off road and thick trees surrounded them. There were no streetlights and no sign of any building anywhere.

"What the fuck..." he muttered, voice cracking, "This isn't the way."

"Where are we?" Lucius asked the driver, but the driver remained silent.

Lucius straightened, at his seat, "Hey, turn around. That's the wrong way."

But the driver continued ignoring him.

Then just barely visible in the rear view mirror, Lucius saw the driver smile. It was a slow, creeping smile and Lucius locked eyes with him.

And Lucius suddenly recognised that smile. It was the smile of a predator.

"Where the fuck are you taking me?" Lucius growled at the driver

And finally the driver spoke, "To a beautiful place," he said.
