Chapter 75: 075 Re-examination
Chen Xu and 2003 spent over two hours rushing to the A020 shelter. As the transport vehicle approached the perimeter wall entrance, the gate opened automatically, allowing them to drive straight in.
The vehicle passed through an open space strewn with metal boxes and arrived at the shelter’s door embedded in the mountainside.
The massive door slowly rose, revealing a gap just wide enough for the vehicle to enter.
As the transport entered the passageway, a beam of incandescent light shined straight ahead, and at the end of the corridor, S01 could be faintly seen standing there.
After getting out of the vehicle, Chen Xu immediately asked, “How is she doing now?”
S01 answered, “She has not regained consciousness yet.”
Chen Xu said, “Trouble you to take me to see her.”
“Please follow me.”
S01 led the way, with Chen Xu and 2003 following behind.
On the ride over, 2003 hadn’t stopped talking, but now it was unusually silent. Last time was the same; it seemed that in the presence of S01, its chatterbox mode automatically disabled.
After passing through two large halls, S01 stopped in front of a room door, opened it, and said, “She’s inside.”
Chen Xu heard the melodious music emanating from the room and walked over.
The room was brightly lit, with Yang Jinxia lying on the bed, pale-faced and her lips nearly devoid of any color, looking fragile and helpless.
He hardly recognized her at first glance. How had she come to look like this in just a few short days?
“The medical system suggested that playing some light music could help soothe her nerves,” S01 said from the side.
Any doubts he had harbored in his heart had now completely dissipated, and he felt a somber heaviness settle in as he asked, “When did she turn out like this?”
“The morning after you left, at four o’clock, I received an alarm from the life-monitor in her room. By then, she had already lost consciousness, and her vital signs were weakening continuously.”
Chen Xu could not understand, he turned his head to look at it and asked, “What exactly happened? She was fine when I left. How could she have ended up in this state so suddenly?”
S01 continued in an unchanging tone, “I took her to the medical pod for a full-body scan. There is no drug reaction in her system, and there are no signs of disease in any of her organs. The final determination is that it’s due to psychological reasons.”
Chen Xu stared at it and slowly said, “I can’t accept that reason.”
“Sir, I understand your feelings. The most important thing now is to help her wake up.”
S01’s green light in its eye socket flickered a few times, and its tone slowed down a bit, “Although rare, such cases are not unprecedented in medical history.”
Chen Xu knew that if it truly wanted to harm her, there was no need to inform him. So, suppressing the discontent in his heart, he asked, “What needs to be done?”
“In cases like hers, it’s probable that she experienced a near-death state and, at the time, suffered extreme psychological trauma. So, when she once again fell into a similar environment or experienced intense psychological stimuli, it triggered a stress response in the brain. Her subconscious believed she had returned to the events of that day, causing her body to relapse into the same state.”
S01 explained in detail, “Typically, this condition can be blocked with medication. However, the shelter can no longer produce such drugs.”
Hearing this, Chen Xu suddenly said, “With her condition, you could have awakened her completely. Why wait until now, letting it become so severe?”
“I apologize,” S01 said, “my core program prohibits harming humans under any circumstances.”
Chen Xu cast an inquiring gaze toward 2003.
It replied, “That’s correct, every officially manufactured robot is programmed this way. In this situation, only medical robots have the authority to take the necessary measures.”
Chen Xu didn’t know how to feel about this practice. No wonder this S01 was so by the book; there must be many more of these restrictive core programs.
He asked, “You mean, forcibly waking her up could harm her, right?”
“Yes. The best way to lift her from this state is with someone she’s close to present.”
Chen Xu shook his head, “I’ve only known her for a little over a month, and our relationship is not close at all.”

“You left, and then she fell into this state,” S01 said.
“Are you implying that this is my fault?” Chen Xu caught the insinuation and glared at it, anger evident on his face.
“She made a request to me before then. If she were to die, she wanted me to notify you.”
Chen Xu’s face flushed, then turned ashen. He walked over to the bed and looked at Yang Jinxia lying there.
Her eyes were tightly closed, her brows occasionally furrowed slightly, making her look exceedingly delicate—a complete reversal of the impression she had made on him.
He stood there for a while, slowly calming down before speaking, “We’ve known each other for just over a month, and we haven’t had much contact, I don’t believe that it’s because of my departure that you’ve been hit this hard. You’re not that fragile. There must be another reason.”
“But I didn’t expect you to be this foolish. Even if I lived a lifetime of guilt because of your death, what would that do for you? You’d be gone, what meaning would that have to you?”
“Besides, I have the least respect for people who threaten others with their lives. A life is one’s own. Those who use their life to punish others are hopelessly stupid.”
Saying this, he sat down beside the bed, grasping her hand, which was ice-cold and devoid of any warmth.
He stared at her for a moment and then sighed, murmuring, “Speaking of which, I’ve been too neglectful of your feelings. Any normal person would find it hard to accept such a drastic change in this world. I should have shown you more care.”
For the first time, he felt there was something rather unkind about copying someone into a dream. After all, to a certain extent, the characters he copied were no different from living people.
He hadn’t felt this deeply in his previous dream. Mainly because Luo Xiyun had seemed so strong.
Turns out that Xia Jinse, who seemed to have a stronger ability to adapt, couldn’t handle it and seemed to have completely broken down.
“What was my purpose in copying her in the first place?”
Suddenly, he began to confront his conscience. What he had hoped for was a beautiful journey through a dream, not the current reality.
He knew the crux of the issue; it was just that he hadn’t wanted to face it before.
“Why can’t you just be honest with yourself?”
He said to himself with a wry smile.
“My grandmother always told me never to expose my weaknesses to others.”
A faint voice sounded in his ear.
