Chapter 63: 063 Chen Xu’s Disappointment

After entering the main door, there was a hallway.

Chen Xu looked around. Whether it was the floor, the walls on either side, or the ceiling above, everything was made of the same material, shining with a metallic luster. He asked, “Could it be that this shelter was built entirely out of metal?”

The cylindrical robot replied, “Sir, I’m sorry, but my database does not contain that information.”

Chen Xu saw it walk to the wall, tilt its body, and touch something. The door then slowly descended. He asked, “Is that the control for opening and closing the door?”

“Yes. The top is for opening, the bottom for closing, and the middle to pause,” the robot explained.

Chen Xu took note and asked, “What should I call you?”

...

“You can call me 2003,” said the cylindrical robot as it waited for the door to close completely before leading the way.

He then noticed the wheels at its base.

The two followed behind it, walking further inside.

The lighting at the top of the hallway was very bright. Chen Xu lagged two steps behind, with Yang Jinxia closely following him. Neither of them spoke, both observing their surroundings and on guard.

Along the way, 2003 briefly introduced them to the situation of the shelter.

After walking for a few minutes, they finally exited the hallway through another door, which led to a desolate hall.

Chen Xu saw that there were doors in three different directions in the hall, each leading to unknown places.

“This is the door to the control center,” 2003 spoke up, opening the door right in front. It led to a slightly narrower corridor.

After passing through three more halls, it finally stopped in front of a door, “This is the control center of the shelter. I do not have access rights.”

Chen Xu said, “We are outsiders. Are we allowed to enter?”

The robot explained, “The purpose of the shelter is to provide a refuge for surviving humans. Everyone in the shelter has died, and the mainframe has automatically entered hibernation mode. The first person to enter the control center will automatically acquire control rights.”

“How do I open the door?”

Chen Xu could only take a gamble. Following 2003’s instructions, he placed his palm on a control console next to the door. Soon, a screen appeared on the wall, displaying his photo.

“Scan successful, welcome, survivor,” a pleasant female voice sounded, and the door swiftly opened.

Chen Xu turned back to look at Yang Jinxia and gestured for her to come in.

The control center was not large and was equally empty. Upon entry, one could see a corpse next to the seats in the middle.

Just before, Chen Xu had learned from 2003 that the few survivors in the shelter had died a few days ago. Four others died outside, whose bodies it had already disposed of. And there was one who died in the control center.

He felt somewhat relieved. If they had arrived a few days later, when the body started to decompose, the scene would have been terrifying.

Chen Xu dragged the body out of the control room and left it outside the door, planning to deal with it later. He then walked to the console, and a screen in front of him lit up.

“Confirming rights, current rank 01 survivor, welcome to Shelter G5232. Please select the operation you wish to perform. You can use voice commands.”

At this moment, Chen Xu finally let out a sigh of relief and said, “I would like to access the surveillance footage.”

Immediately, several folders appeared on the screen, “Please select a date.”

Seeing the screen indicating that today was May 7, he said, “Surveillance from before May 3 of this year.”

That was the date when the last person in the shelter had died. He wanted to see if things were as 2003 had said.

“There is no surveillance footage for that day.”

He was surprised, “How could there be none?”

“It has been deleted.”

Hearing this, Chen Xu suddenly had a foreboding feeling, “What about the surveillance from before then?”

“Surveillance footage before May 3 has all been deleted.”

“Then, what about other data?” Chen Xu still clung to a faint hope.

Soon, a line of text appeared on the screen, “System hard drive has been formatted; all data repositories are empty.”

“Damn it,” Chen Xu couldn’t help but curse loudly.

Yang Jinxia hurriedly asked him, “What’s wrong?”

Chen Xu slapped the chair beside him and said angrily, “That bastard, before dying, deleted all the data.”

Yang Jinxia paused for a moment before she understood that he was referring to the corpse they had just moved out.

In reality, it wasn’t hard to understand; that person had been trapped in the shelter, food had run out, and death was inevitable. In such despair, it wouldn’t be strange to do something crazy.

She also felt a great sense of regret. Neither of them understood the situation in this world, and the robot was clueless too. The information on the main computer was an excellent way for them to get up to speed. Now that it was all deleted, no wonder Chen Xu was so angry.

However, she still tried to console him, “What’s done is done, no use getting angry.”

“Sigh.”

Chen Xu looked at the screen and sighed deeply, thinking to himself, they really don’t give you an inch to squirm through.

If he considered this dream to be a game, then this shelter would be the first instance and the pair of gorillas, the first level bosses. After beating them, the reward was this emptied-out shelter.

But while those gorillas were tough, they were not insurmountable. The reward couldn’t be too generous either—an assistant robot and a shelter to stay in sounded about right. Had they added the various data from the main computer, it would be unbalanced.

Though he understood this logic, it still stung a bit.

He wasn’t particularly concerned about beating the game. To him, the main objective was to find a way to make money.

The technological level of this world was clearly higher than Earth’s. If he could get the data from the main computer, select some useful knowledge, and master it, he might have the chance to make a fortune and reach the pinnacle of life once he woke up.

Now that chance was gone, and who wouldn’t be frustrated?

“That’s not right.”

Suddenly, a thought sparked in his mind, “What about the system disk? You were able to reboot, so that means the system disk is still here, right? What about the data on it?”

“System data cannot be deleted.”

“What kind of data is in there?” Chen Xu eagerly asked.

Immediately, many folders appeared on the screen. His spirits lifted as he looked through each one until he noticed a folder labeled, “Knowledge Seed Project.”

“Open it,” he commanded.

More folders appeared on the screen.

“The Knowledge Seed Project is an endeavor to pass down human scientific knowledge. It includes most of the knowledge from basic disciplines,” the main computer’s voice explained.

Chen Xu skimmed through quickly until he found a folder on computer software programming and opened it.

From memory, he knew artificial intelligence was a promising field, and the AI here seemed more advanced than in reality.

Although he knew nothing about software programming now, he could learn.

With that thought in mind, he began reading the directory. As he read, something felt off.

During his university years, he took basic computer science courses, familiar with languages like C++ and Java. However, when he opened the subdirectory of programming languages, none of the programming languages he knew were there. Their names were completely unfamiliar to him.

He asked, “Why aren’t there any programming languages like C++ included in here?”

“The Knowledge Seed Project only collects the most mainstream knowledge, and the programming languages do not include the C++ language you mentioned.”

Hearing the computer’s response, Chen Xu gave up. Screw it, even the programming languages are different; what’s there to learn?
