Chapter 91: Elijah, Mireya And Natalia

He crossed his legs and leaned his chin into his fist. He gaze over her face while she stared at him. Their eyes met and locked with each other.

"Do you remember when you asked me if I have someone special?" He asked.

She nodded. "That’s when they announced your engagement and you were frustrated."

He chuckled. "I didn’t give you an answer because I wasn’t sure back then. But I will answer you now. As crazy as it may sound, but I’m in love with a ghost. And if death is the only way so I can be with her, then I will gladly throw my life for her."

Her eyes were as steady as glass. She was unable to give him a response and was just staring at him.

Elijah gave a big, wild roar of a laugh. "You look stupid."

She pouted. "Because you suddenly confessed. What do you think would I feel?"

"And what made you think it was you?"

She confidently smiled at him. "I’m the only ghost that stayed by your side for years. And I was hoping that it was me."

He frowned. "What did you say?"

She blushed and hugged her legs again. "I have had a crush on you for a long time now. But as you said, I’m dead and we’re cousins. This kind of feeling is bizarre."

Then she turned to him, her face on her knees. "This is bad, right? Being in love with someone you can’t even touch. But Elijah, I don’t want you to die for my sake. I’m happy that you feel the same way. But this is our reality. You’re alive and I’m dead. You have a whole life ahead of you."

Her heart was beginning to feel painful again. It’s like being shattered into a thousand pieces. Looking at Elijah’s face made her wanted to touch him more.

"You have a future. I have none. I don’t want you to waste it on me. You’ll regret leaving those people who love you. You won’t be able to bear the pain of seeing your mom’s tears while she cried out your name. So promise me, whatever happens, you won’t die." She continued.

His gaze fixed on her while he listened to every word she said. "I promise. But will you stay with me forever until my last breath? I’ll probably live a hundred years. Will you wait for me?"

"How about Natalia? Will you try being nice to her? Maybe you can -"

"Stop, Mireya. I did try. But she was the one who pushed me away." He said.

Even if it was painful, Mireya knew she had to convince Elijah to fix his relationship with Natalia. She was really happy hearing his confession, but it scared her that he wanted to end his life to be with her.

"Then try harder." She mumbled.

Before Elijah could answer, Natalia suddenly stepped into his bedroom. They were both surprised because she didn’t even knock.

"Can you please at least knock? This is my room." He frowned.

Natalia ignored him and sat on the bed, facing him. She crossed her legs and glared at Elijah.

"You’re my fiance. This is also mine." Natalia answered.

"What? We’re not married yet and you’re already depriving me of my privacy. I want to be alone, Natalia. Can you please go back to your room?" He asked politely.

Natalia laughed. "Alone?" Then her eyes strolled around the room. "I know you’re not alone. You’re with that dead girl."

"Her name is Mireya. Stop saying she’s a dead girl."

"I really have no match for her. She’s dead, but you always choose her over me." Natalia laughed bitterly.

Elijah looked at Natalia. There was a resigned sadness in his eyes. She was his first friend in the palace. He liked her when they were kids, but everything changed when she started obsessing over him.

"And who do you think is at fault? Mireya had nothing to do with our relationship. I told you a hundred times that I can’t be your husband. You’re like a sister to me. Nothing more, nothing less. But you forced yourself on me."

Tears started flowing from Natalia’s eyes. He was supposed to pity her. But her tears had no effect on him anymore. He had been deceived by her a lot of times with her tears, making him feel that everything was his fault.

"Why do you always say hurtful words to me? I love you and I am your fiance, but you treat me nothing but trash." She sobbed.

Elijah let out a cold, bitter laugh. "Natalia, you knew from the start that I am not in favor of our engagement. Love? You say? Do you really know the true meaning of love? Your obsession with me is suffocating. I can’t breathe. The only reason I stayed with this fucking arrangement is because you always threaten me with your life."

Natalia looked at him. Her face was a mess, tears kept on flowing from her eyes.

"That’s love, Elijah. You were just confused. Soon, you’ll realize that the reason you stay with me was because of love."

He couldn’t believe what she said. "You’re fucking crazy! Think whatever you want. But that marriage will never happen."

Natalia started to panic. She began shouting at Elijah. Cursing him and calling him names.

"You’re an asshole! You’re nothing compared to your cousin! Try leaving me and the next thing you’ll see in your bedroom is my dead body! You’re in love with that ghost, right? Do you think if you break up with me, you can fuck that dead girl? She’s just a fucking imagination of her brother. She’s not real."

Then she stopped after an hour of screaming and yelling. She tilted her head and stared at him.

"I’m not bluffing, Elijah. I’ll kill myself and become a ghost. Maybe I’ll meet with your dead lover and kill her soul so you could never see her again." She laughed, then walked toward the door.

He looked at her back darkly. Before she stepped out of the room, he let out a harsh laugh. "Go ahead. Even if you become a ghost, I will never look at you. I will not be deceived by you again. You are a woman full of lies. A girl in sheep’s clothing."

Elijah clenched his fist when Natalia left. Mireya had witnessed every argument of the two, but this was by far the worst. She knew Natalia was not the girl everyone thought she was. Elijah was just too naïve and too nice toward the girl.

"Are you okay?" She asked.

But she was surprised when she noticed his shoulders shaking.

"She was my friend. I trusted her. How can she do this to me?" He sobbed.

Mireya had no idea if she could comfort him. Or if he would feel her touch. But if he needed her. She hesitated at first, but then she put her palm over his head and slowly patted him. Elijah was surprised. He also didn’t expect to feel Mireya’s touch. It was faint, but he felt it.

"I always wanted to do this. Always remember, I am always here for you. I love you, Elijah." She said with a wide smile on her face.

Her smile made his anger vanished. All the bitter memory that Natalia gave him disappeared because of Mireya’s touch. Without saying anything to each other, they slowly closed the gap between their hands, putting their palms together.

"You’re warm." She said.

"You’re cold." He mumbled.

She chuckled. "I think ghosts are cold."

They laughed and stayed like that for a while. He wanted to touch her face, so he did, placing his other palm on her cheek. They both knew they could never hold each other, but for now, feeling the others’ presence was enough for them.

"I think I will tell my mom about what happened that day. Do you think she will believe me?" Elijah asked.

Mireya nodded. "She’s your mom. She knows when you’re lying or telling the truth. But Elijah, you have to tell her everything. You have protected her for a long time, but all you got was distress. It’s for the best. She needs help and you know that."

Elijah nodded. "How about your brother and Alira? Do you think if I tell them, they will believe me?"

"Of course! Someone has to know, Elijah. I’m a ghost, so I can’t help you. I’m sorry."

"Hey, don’t be. You helped me more than you know. I thought I can keep up with her insanity. But I felt like I will also lose my mind if I stay quiet."

"You did everything, Elijah. It’s time to tell your side of the story. They will believe you. And I’ll be here by your side. Don’t worry." She said, reassuring him.

He smiled at her, showing off his pearly white teeth. "I’m happy you’re here with me. I love you, Mireya."
